PRINCIPAL’S THOUGHTS

Messages from Mr Dill

Demonstration Lessons

On Wednesday and Thursday this week, we had private consultant Anita Chin present mathematics demonstration lessons to a number of classes across the school. Anita was delighted to engage with the students and challenge them to be real mathematicians under the watchful eyes of staff. Following feedback from the reading workshop, we are planning to hold a parent workshop on mathematics in Term 3 led by Anita.  We will let you know when the details are finalised.

Education Week 2023

Education Week 2023 will be held from 31 July to 4 August 2023 (Week 3, Term 3) with our open day at Drummoyne PS on Tuesday 1st August.

This year’s theme is 175 years of public education in NSW and focuses on learning from our past, celebrating our achievements and embracing the future with confidence.

The program for our open day will be developed in the coming weeks and we look forward to having you join us.

School Performances - Advance Notice

We are excited to announce that at the end of Term 3 we will celebrate the performing arts through stage based performances across 3 shows ie K-2, Year's 3 & 4 and Year's 5 & 6.

Every student will participate in an aspect of their stage's performance. During Term 3, the teachers from ZingActiv will teach each class the choreography to a particular song, and an opening and finale to the stage performance based on the theme chosen.  Further information on dates, costuming and ticketing will be provided next term.  Please keep the week beginning 18th September free.

Reports Preparation

Student assessments are currently taking place in classrooms across the school in preparation for student reports being sent home at the end of this term. The assessments may be conducted in a more formal way to ensure valid grades in key learning areas.

Early Arrival

Supervision of students at school commences each day at 8.50am with a teacher on duty in the infant’s playground and a teacher in the primary playground. If students arrive before 8.50am, they are asked to sit down until the teacher on duty arrives. Especially during the winter months, students should not be at school early in the morning.

Every Day Matters!

Every day matters, right throughout the term!

It is really important for students to come to school every single day, unless they are sick.

Being at school every day boosts student learning and confidence and helps them build and maintain friendships.

A reminder that planned travel should only be taken during school holidays and students should be at school every day during school term, right from beginning to end.

Missing a day here or there may not seem like much, but absences add up. Every day matters and we are here to support all students in attending and engaging with their learning every day of the term.

Behaviour Code for Students

NSW public schools are committed to providing safe, supportive and responsive learning environments for everyone. We teach and model the behaviours we value in our students.

In NSW public schools students are expected to:

  • Respect other students, their teachers and school staff and community members
  • Follow school and class rules and follow the directions of their teachers
  • Strive for the highest standards in learning
  • Respect all members of the school community and show courtesy to all students, teachers and community members
  • Resolve conflict respectfully, calmly and fairly
  • Comply with the school’s uniform policy or dress code
  • Attend school every day (unless legally excused)
  • Respect all property
  • Not be violent or bring weapons, illegal drugs, alcohol or tobacco into our schools
  • Not bully, harass, intimidate or discriminate against anyone in our schools

Schools take strong action in response to behaviour that is detrimental to self or others or to the achievement of high quality teaching and learning.

Behaviour Code for Students: Actions

Promoting the learning, wellbeing and safety of all students in NSW Public Schools is a high priority for the Department of Education. We implement teaching and learning approaches to support the development of skills needed by students to meet our high standards for respectful, safe and engaged behaviour.

Respect

  • Treat one another with dignity
  • Speak and behave courteously
  • Cooperate with others
  • Develop positive and respectful relationships and think about the effect on relationships before acting
  • Value the interests, ability and culture of others
  • Dress appropriately by complying with the school uniform or dress code
  • Take care with property

Safety

  • Model and follow departmental, school and/or class codes of behaviour and conduct
  • Negotiate and resolve conflict with empathy
  • Take personal responsibility for behaviour and actions
  • Care for self and others
  • Avoid dangerous behaviour and encourage others to avoid dangerous behaviour

Engagement

  • Attend school every day (unless legally excused)
  • Arrive at school and class on time
  • Be prepared for every lesson
  • Actively participate in learning
  • Aspire and strive to achieve the highest standards of learning

The principal and school staff, using their professional judgment, are best placed to maintain discipline and provide safe, supportive and responsive learning environments. The department provides a policy framework and resources such as Legal Issues Bulletins, access to specialist advice, and professional learning to guide principals and their staff in exercising their professional judgment. In this context the NSW Government and the Department of Education will back the authority and judgment of principals and school staff at the local level.

FROM THE DEPUTY'S DESK

National Sorry Day Art Work

To mark National Sorry Day on May 26 students made handcrafted purple flowers to acknowledge and show our solidarity to the Stolen Generations.

The five-petal Native Hibiscus was chosen to symbolise the scattering of the Stolen Generations and their resilience to the eugenic policies of Australia.

Supporting Student Learning at School

Last term we held parent teacher interviews and both staff and parent feedback was very positive. I hope you were able to gain helpful insights into your child/ren’s progress.

Teachers have also had conversations with some families to inform of any adjustments that are in place to support student learning at school.

If you have received any learning adjustments or personalised learning plans (PLaSPs) to review and sign, I would like to ask that you return them to your child’s teacher as soon as possible. This will enable us to ensure we have the most current information when completing the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD).

An information sheet regarding the NCCD is included in the newsletter. All schools in Australia participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD). The NCCD process requires schools to identify information already available in the school about supports provided to students with disability. These relate to legislative requirements under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005, in line with the NCCD guidelines (2023).

This information assists schools to: formally recognise the supports and adjustments provided to students with disability in schools, consider how they can strengthen the support of students with disability and develop shared practices so that they can review their learning programs in order to improve educational outcomes for students with disability.

The NCCD will have no direct impact on your child and your child will not be involved in any testing process. The school will provide data to the Australian Government in such a way that no individual student will be able to be identified – the privacy and confidentiality of all students is ensured. All information is protected by privacy laws that regulate the collection, storage and disclosure of personal information.

To find out more about these matters, please refer to the information provided in the link below. If you have any questions about the NCCD, please contact the school.

COVID SAFETY UPDATES

RAT kits are available from the school office if needed

RAT kits were sent home with all students at the end of Term 1. Even so, if your children are experiencing COVID symptoms and parents would like another box of RAT'S for continued testing, please call or visit the office to arrange collection.

COVID-smart measures in schools

Our layered COVID-smart measures – staying home if unwell, hygiene and cleaning practices, testing for COVID-19, masks strongly encouraged and ventilation – will continue this term. More details on our Advice for families page.

NSW Health advise that during the winter months, COVID will continue to present a health risk to the community. Accordingly, schools will implement baseline COVID-smart measures to help reduce the risk of transmission for students and staff members. These key COVID-smart measures include:

  • staying home and getting tested if unwell, and only attending school when symptom free.

  • rapid antigen testing for symptomatic students and staff. Please contact us for test kits.

Staying home when sick

With flu cases on the rise, we would like to remind you that simple hygiene such as regularly washing hands will help stop the spread of the potentially deadly virus.

Students are asked to stay home when sick. They should only attend school when they are symptom free.

Parents and carers who have children with persistent or ongoing symptoms of flu or COVID 19 are encouraged to have these assessed by their local health care professional. These symptoms may be related to other illnesses (e.g. allergies or hay fever) that require treatment and management by a doctor.

HELPING YOUR CHILD WITH THE NEW CURRICULUM

Reading comprehension at home

Following the recent parent workshop, there were some questions about how to support children with their reading comprehension at home. Below are some great tips for you as the adult to look at prior to reading with your child.

These two bookmarks would be excellent to use while your child is reading to you or you are reading to your child. One bookmark will assist with reading comprehension for a chapter book and the sorts of questions you can be asking throughout each chapter. The other is for a fiction picture book including questions to ask before, during and after the read (a printable PDF is attached below).

GENERAL NEWS

Danger - please avoid parking in bus zones

The message below was sent to the school on behalf of the bus drivers who are driving the school run, route 745, in the morning and afternoon.

"We are writing as we are having a hard time to pick up/drop off the kid’s safely due to occupied bus stops.

We have emailed the Canada Bay Council but the issue still continues. We are hoping if this email is coming from schools maybe it will get some action. Please see the attached photo of the cars and bus stops that are always occupied during school hours.

We hope to get this issue rectified soon before any kids get injured jumping in/off the bus."

Tap on and tap off, every time you travel by bus

Our school is partnering with the local school bus operator, Busways, to support a new Tap On and Tap Off education campaign encouraging students who travel by bus to correctly use their school Opal cards. Busways is implementing this campaign throughout Term 3, 2023. This campaign will focus on a simple message – tap on and tap off every time you travel by bus.

Why is tapping on and off on the bus important?

The use of Opal cards is the primary way bus operators and Transport for NSW analyse demand for bus services. When students don’t use their Opal cards, their trip is not recorded. Therefore, buses may appear underutilised. Tapping on and off provides better data to plan better bus services. How can you help? If your child travels to school by bus, please ensure your child has a valid Opal card (either a School or Child/Youth Opal card).

Visit Transport for NSW website to apply for a school Opal card. Students may see onboard bus posters and Busways Community Relation Officers at afternoon loadings. Together let’s get students into good habits of tapping on and tapping off with their Opal card.

Thank you for your support with this campaign.

June P&C Meeting Online

The next P&C meeting will be held on Tuesday 20 June 2023 online.  Everyone is welcome to attend.  The details for parents to join us will be provided next month.

Reminder - please return your P&C Volunteer Form ASAP

Each year our parent community plays a vital role in supporting Drummoyne Public School.  We are very fortunate to be part of such a wonderful community! The richness of school life that the children enjoy is due to the ongoing support of parents, grandparents and friends of the school.

One important avenue of support is through P&C organised activities, providing funds each year for various projects.

The purpose of this post is to ask all families to support the organisation of one P&C activity this year.  Our hope is that all families will ‘play a part’ in enriching the lives and learning of our children through volunteering for just one activity.

Would you please indicate on the form attached below one P&C activity or role that you would be willing to be involved in this year and hand to your child’s class teacher at a parent teacher interview or to the school office and record your willingness to support the school and P&C.

This information will be collated and a member of the P&C will be in touch in due course.

We hope that 2023 is a wonderful year for you and your family.
