Goulburn North Public School Newsletter

Term 3 Week 9 - 2023

School News

Thank you Support Staff

Goulburn North Public School is so grateful for the amazing contribution that our Support Staff do at school. Last week, was SAS Recognition Week. We would like to thank the each and every member of the school team for their dedication and contribution to the school.

Wendy and Cathy are our amazing admin team. They keep the office run so well. They are the face of the school and often the first person you speak to on the telephone when you call. They are always support the teachers with orders, admin tasks and a whole host of jobs. A massive thank you to these brilliant ladies.

This year we have a large team of support staff in classrooms. We have Amanda, Fiona, Skye, Jayden, Beverly, Madison, Bronwyn, Georgia and Kyly. They are always supporting classroom teachers with students in pretty much any capacity. You will see these amazing people sitting beside students to provide work support, walking with student in the playground to assist with regulation, making teaching resources and pretty much anything that is required of them.

Finally our team of SAS is supported by a General Assistant. Allan is our General Assistant. He is maintaining our school grounds, supporting with building maintenance, and assisting the school in any odd job that needs completing. Allan is often the member of staff helping set up for Fireworks, opening up the school after hours and making sure all buildings are secured after hours.

The SAS team are pretty much the glue that holds the school together. They are a wonderful group of people to work with and we say "Thank you for your amazing contributions to our great school".

New Adjustments Feedback

Our new school break times have been implemented for a week and first week was very successful. We hope that will continue into week 2 of the trial.

All soccer areas have been established and are ready for use. A timetable will follow to help students access the right location for soccer games.

Our new whole school lunch eating area has resulted in a dramatic reduction in liter across the school. This will continue moving forward.

We are exploring further options for increased playground experiences that provide greater engagement for our students. These will be shared soon.

Grow Your Mind and Home

The Grow Your Mind Program is continuing to support our students at school. We received another positive story of impact from a parent:

This morning Student A got up pretty stressed about running today. He said to me I’m having lots of shark thoughts and I said 'Okay, what are they?' a bit confused and he said negative thoughts, I need to think some dolphin thoughts. Then on the way to Canberra it opened up lots of conversation, we talked about dolphin thoughts and it was a really nice start to thinking positively in a situation he normal would spiral into an anxious mess. And by spiral I mean he has in the past literally made himself sick. And I believe he got through the stress and being out of his comfort zone today because we started off on such a high thinking about everything going right rather than wrong.

We would love to share any stories of similar conversations with your children. Feel free to forward these to school through your classroom teacher. We hope to send out details of this program to parents, so they are able to understand any discussions your children will have with you.

Grow You Mind Impact Report - 2022

Attached is the Grow Your Mind Impact Report for 2022. Feel free to read more about this amazing program, that is showing signs of impact at our school, after just 3 small weeks of learning. We look forward to what comes next.

We recommend exploring what is contained on this site, for parents of students in Years 3 to 6.

Progress is occurring in the 'Inappropriate Language' space

The school has continued to keep a focus on 'Inappropriate Language' and we will continue to follow this focus throughout the school term. However, we have discovered a noticeable decrease in incidents being logged revolving around 'Inappropriate Language'. We are still on the journey, but we are beginning to see a noticeable improvement across the school. We would also like to thank our amazing North Community in this regard for your assisting and support with helping our school in this space.

NSW Behaviour Code for Students

Please find attached a copy of the NSW Behaviour Code for Students. Our current focus for the remainder of Term 3 is reducing 'Inappropriate Language' at school. This code outlines student expectation in being respectful to others and speaking courteously.

Nut Free Reminder

We have started to notice that nuts and food containing nuts are beginning to creep into school again. We would like to ask our community to have nut free options for student lunches. We have a number of student at school that have nut allergies and nut intolerances. Whilst we maintain a strict 'no sharing of foods policy' to keep all students safe, some students can have a reaction from a few particles in the air or being in close proximity to students that have nuts. To assist us in keeping all of our community safe, we ask that lunches have nut free alternatives if at all possible.

We thank you in advance.

Volunteer and help us improve Reading across the school

Our amazing friends at "Reading Friends Australia" have started supporting our school. We currently have a number of volunteers supporting our school. We thank those that are now supporting at North.

If you are interested in being involved with this program, our students will end up becoming better readers. If you can donate as little as an hour a week to sit and listen to some student read, we are happy for the support this will bring our students.

Please contact the office and we will connect you with our team of volunteers.

Mental Health Service and Support

The school has had a recent number of students that have been experiencing some difficulty and have required to access the support of CAMHS. The school is currently working with the 'Be You' team to seek additional support and services in this space. We are here to help as best we can, we would ideally like to work proactively with our community. If you would like to discuss anything to do with your children, please reach out and contact the school. We are more than happy to provide whatever support we can.

The 'BeYou' Team have provided the following information for places where you can also seek support for yourself or your children.

Curriculum and Instruction

Throughout this term, our students have had the opportunity to read with volunteers from Reading Friends Australia. This initiative is proving to be a valuable experience for all involved. One volunteer has been quoted in saying, "All the teachers were very welcoming and helpful. I enjoyed it very much and look forward to next week!" And another stating, "It was great! Gorgeous kids and very appreciative teachers." Thank you to everyone involved in making it so successful. If you, or someone you know, would like to be involved as a reading volunteer please email info@readingfriends.org.au

Congratulations to Jade and Maisy from 2/3C who each won a canteen voucher, gift and certificate from the recent art competition organised by Reading Friends Australia.

News from around the area...

News From Around The School

2C News

2C have been taking part in the new school wide program “Grow Your Mind”. We have been learning about the importance of being kind and being a bucket filler. Students have listened to the story "Have You Filled a Bucket Today, by Carol McCloud" and discovered the many ways we can fill or empty someone’s bucket. We have also learned that by filling someone's bucket we also fill our own bucket and by being unkind and bucket dipping we also dip into our own bucket. We have also had a look at shark and dolphin thinking and learned that shark thoughts bite you, they are not helpful whereas dolphin thoughts are realistically optimistic thoughts that are helpful. We drew a picture of our sharks and gave them a silly name to take away their power.

2C would also like to say thank you to Miss Stapleton who we have had in our classroom for five weeks while she is studying to become a teacher. The students have loved getting to know you and have you to help support their learning. We wish you all the best with the rest of your learning journey and hope to see you again soon.

3/4L News

3/4L have been studying Symmetry in Math. We have looked at the language involved such as translation, rotation and reflection. To celebrate Roald Dahl day, we decided to use our knowledge of Symmetry to draw the Fantastic Mr Fox. "It was a little hard, but a fun way to learn symmetry", Finn.

5/6F News

Term 3 has been super busy. Not only have 5/6F been busy taking part in Education Week, Book Week, GCOPS, High School Taster Days (to name a few) we have also been flat chat in the classroom as well.

We have started the Grow Your Mind program, worked hard on our Literacy Contracts using google classroom and built a city using lots of mathematical concepts. To wrap the term up we are working on a novel study for 'Sadako and The Thousand Paper Cranes.'

5/6L News

In Term 3, 5/6L have been enjoying some drama. The students have been able to demonstrate their ability in impromptu activities and worked collaboratively together to create scenarios. All students have really demonstrated growth in their confidence in front of the class.

NLG News

We come to the end of another busy term. NLG have been engaged in a variety of activities this term ranging from designing their own obstacle courses, sewing, cooking and building their own ships to looking at and using descriptive and prepositional language in writing and conversation using their creations and dress-ups as inspiration. In Maths we have been exploring whole numbers, strategies to add and subtract, patterns and positional language. We use play-based learning to explore these concepts, encouraging lots conversations with ‘what if’ questions and games to reinforce our learning.

Our Social Emotional Learning is coming along well, this term we implemented the Grow Your Mind program. We have been learning about the different parts of the brain and how they affect our behaviour. You may hear a lot about the different ways we can breathe to wake up our brain animals or how we can calm our Guard Dog. It has been wonderful to see the students work towards building their character strengths. NLG’s favourite character strengths so far have been perseverance and humour.

Canteen News

Hello Everyone,

I would like to introduce myself, my name is Sharon Warn and I am the new canteen manager at GNPS.

I have been in the job for a couple of weeks now, and I must say it’s a pleasure to work for the school, P&C and the children attending GNPS.

So far I have found the P&C President Kylie, Treasurer Ali, our 2 great volunteers Heather and Wendy, along with my helpers on a Friday volunteers Erin and Tash, very helpful with onboarding and getting setup with everything, not to mention meeting all the well mannered and friendly children.

Moving forward, I am hoping we can build the canteen into a convenient asset to GNPS, students and parents/carers. In addition, being able to be available to open more days in the near future, improve the running and provide more options on the menu. We are hoping to source more volunteers to help make this possible.

I understand in today’s society everyone is busy with work, small children and various other important commitments. Any time, no matter how big or small, would be of great benefit to help keep our canteen open. Weekly, fortnightly, monthly, or even for a few hours here and there would be of great help to us. We encourage parents, grandparents, also friends to come along and volunteer. We provide training and information to help volunteers get started. Please don’t hesitate to contact me for more information or availability, it would be greatly appreciated. Be assured I want to make the canteen a friendly and fun atmosphere for all involved. I will be looking at an updated menu at the end of the year, to hopefully start in the new year. My goals being healthy, yummy, affordable and variety of food in which children will enjoy.

Please feel free to call in and say hello anytime, I would love to meet some of the parents and family members. If you have any problems please don’t hesitate to call me,

I will try assist in any way I can. My contact number is 0428 259 791

Thank you,

Kind Regards

Sharon
