Newsletter

Our newsletter is published twice a term and we use the Audiri app to communicate messages to our families in between newsletter weeks. Please download the Audiri app so you do not miss important messages from school.

Parking

Parent parking is located at the front of the school on Tina St, Arthur St in the back car park and along Eaglesfield St. Parents are not to park in the turnaround area at Eaglesfield St. This gate will be closed and the expectation is that all parents park in the aforementioned parking areas. Do not open this gate and drive into this area as you are putting children’s safety at risk.

WAITING AREAS

Parent waiting areas for our Prep and Year 1 students of an afternoon and a morning are at the trees out the front or under A Block or the undercover area.  I ask that of a morning parents move off quickly to make the transition to learning a lot smoother and of an afternoon if parents wait until approximately 2:45 to wait near the classroom as this can be disruptive to classes.

Parents and Carers are NOT to wait on verandahs, steps or ramps.

Prep

Our Prep students have started their first year exceptionally well with lots of wonderful learning happening.  Thank you to Miss Moloney, Miss Kelly and Mrs Charles for making their transition to school such an amazing experience.

Below are a few tips in assisting your child’s new school year:

·         Be positive and enthusiastic about school and their schooling (it’s contagious!) For example: “What was the best thing you learnt today?

·         Ensure a rested sleep – i.e. minimising technology near bedtime

·         Encourage a growth mindset in your child- e.g. “When it’s difficult I’m going to keep trying my best” as opposed to “When it’s difficult I’ll give up”.

·         Discuss goals your child has for their year and how they will achieve them

·         Communicate with your child’s teacher and administration – via email, phone or in person.

Anxiety

The start of the school year is often exciting and enjoyable for many of our students but for others it can be a time that produces anxiety and worry.

Children with anxiety problems lack confidence in their abilities and feel overwhelmed easily. They are not “putting it on” or trying to take the easy way out. They need to learn how to cope with worries and build confidence. This does not mean just telling them not to be silly. It means providing positive support and teaching them the emotional and thinking skills that can help them.

Parents and carers can:

·         Teach children to be brave by showing them you believe they can do things and encouraging them to have a go even when they are scared or worried. You might remind them of a time when they were brave and it worked.

·         Break larger goals into small steps that children can succeed with, and praise their success.

·         Help them learn relaxation skills. Breathing slowly to calm down and imagining yourself coping in a scary situation are really helpful ways of managing anxiety. Doing it with them is a fun way to start.

·         Teach children helpful self-talk. Instead of saying to themselves “I can’t do this” encourage them to say “I’ll give it a go”. Help them to see that by worrying less they can do more and feel better about themselves.

Mobile Devices

All mobile devices must be signed in at the front office upon arrival to school. This includes, but not limited to, iPads, mobile phones and watches with the capability to ring and/or take photos, regardless if this mode can be switched off prior to coming to school. The devices are safely stored and are easily collected from the office at the end of the day.

QParents app

We strongly encourage all families to access the QParents app to access school permissions, invoices, absences and letters. QParents requires us to verify your identification and this is easily done via our front office.

Lost Property

Our lost property bin is located under A Block for easier access at pick up and drop off times for families. Please ensure your child’s name is clearly labelled on their belongings so we can return the item to their teacher rather than put it in the lost property. We have a number of hats and water bottles in lost property already this year.

Attendance

This year attendance has started strong with the average sitting at 90.6%. We would like to continue this for the year. I understand that sometimes absences can’t be helped due to illness and other circumstances but parents/carers need to contact the office to let us know why your child is absent. I’m hoping that this year our attendance will stay above 90%.   Education is important to ensure the best possible future for your child!

NAPLAN - 2024

  • Topic: Supporting children’s reading at home
  • Dates: 21 February and 13 March 2024
  • Time: 6:30pm – 7:15pm
  • Audience: Parents and Carers of Prep to Year 2 students
  • Registration: https://www.ivvy.com.au/event/KLCA5Y/

Deputy Principal Update

Mr Tyrrell

Hello parents, carers and Students;

My name is Keith Tyrrell and I have been the Acting Deputy Principal here at BSS since the start of 2024 and will be for another 3 weeks.  I am normally the Science HOD at BSHS and it has been very rewarding getting to know the younger siblings of the students I normally work with.  I have thoroughly enjoyed working with all year levels, from the preps up to the year 6’s which is not a totally new environment to me as I have previously worked in two P-12 schools, (Winton and Varsity Lakes). However, I did forget how awesome primary school environments can truly be. The entire staff at BSS have been extremely welcoming and are a very dedicated team who work tirelessly to support all students in achieving their personal best.

School zone safety – advice for motorists, parents and carers

With school back for 2024, we need to keep safety top-of-mind when travelling through active school zones and around our school community.

School zone times have been standardised in Queensland to help motorists remember when to slow down. The standard operating times for most school zones in Queensland are 7–9am and 2–4pm, with some operating all day between 7am–4pm.

Speeding remains a significant concern, contributing to fatalities and injuries, and police will be on the lookout for speeding motorists. Keeping below the signed speed limit in school zones helps keep everyone safe. This simple adjustment may have minimal impact on travel time but has the potential to significantly contribute to saving lives.

Children's crossings are identified by children's crossing flags, displayed near crossings before and after school hours.

When the crossing is supervised, you, as a motorist, must:

  • Wait until all pedestrians, bicycle riders, or personal mobility device riders have crossed the road and the crossing supervisor has returned to the footpath.
  • Abide by the direction given by the School Crossing Supervisor.

Please keep our children safe by staying alert, slowing down and obeying our school crossing supervisors who are there to help kids cross the road safely.

You can also help children become more road safety aware by:

•       Showing them how to look for vehicles coming in and out of driveways and discourage them from playing behind parked cars, or with toys or balls when walking to school.

•       Ensuring your child knows the safest route to and from school. This is usually the way with the least traffic and the fewest roads to cross and teach your child to always walk on footpaths.

•       Showing your child how to cross at traffic lights when the green 'walk' sign is showing at pedestrian crossings when vehicles have stopped and at supervised school crossings when the supervisor has signalled it is safe to do so.

•       Accompanying children when walking or riding to school until they are old enough to understand road safety (usually around 10 years or older).

•       Teaching your child if they catch the bus to never cross in front of or behind a bus; wait until the bus goes before crossing the road.

•       Making sure wheeled devices (bicycle, scooter, skateboard, or rollerblades) used to travel to school are well maintained and that the appropriate protective and safety gear (for example, helmet, visible clothing, knee and elbow pads) are used.

Visit the Street Smarts website for more information about what to do at pedestrian and children crossings.

Junior School Classroom Reports

Prep

The Preps are settling into their new classrooms and have enjoyed making lots of new friends, meeting their teachers and exploring their new school environment. They have been very busy learning their Jolly Phonics sounds and are enjoying reading a range of picture books and talking about their thoughts and feelings. The Preps have been developing their fine and gross motor skills through a range of activities such as obstacle courses, ball games, craft and construction. They have also attended Specialist lessons in The Arts, Digital Tech, HPE and visited the library to borrow books.

So, this is what big school is all about!

Year 1

Year 1 students have settled well into the classroom environment this year and are enjoying adventuring around the school during lunch breaks. In English, students have been learning about recounts and giving opinions. They have been learning how to order the steps of an activity, and to use time connectives. The students have particularly enjoyed icing biscuits as part of their learning. In Maths, Year 1 students have enjoyed learning about numbers and how to represent teen numbers in different ways. Later this term, students will investigate graphs and learn how to collect data. In Science, students have been learning about how light and sound is produced, and how sounds can be altered. They have enjoyed making loud and quiet sounds in the classroom with their bodies, instruments and items they have found around the school.

Year 2

Year 2 have had a great start to 2024. Everyone is settled into their new classes and new friendships are blossoming.

We are looking forward to a busy term in the classroom. There are some cool things we are working towards this term, including, creating a toy, creating an interview with the 'Cranky Bear' and travelling virtually to all the continents.

The Year 2 Team.

Lost Property

As always, we have a mountain of lost property piling up at school. A lot of it is unnamed which makes it extremely hard to get it returned to the rightful owner. If your student has lost any items direct them to the lost property bins which are located under A Block Administration Building, or you're welcome to pop in for a look yourselves. Please check there if your children are missing any of their belongings.

PLEASE MAKE SURE ALL BELONGINGS ARE CLEARLY LABELLED!

Chappy Corner

Happy New Year! I really hope that you all had a wonderful Christmas break and weren’t adversely affected by the crazy weather. Please make sure you let us know if we can help in any way.

For those of you who do not know me, my name is Chappy Jade, and I have the privilege of being your school Chappy. I am here at Beauy every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

My role as school Chaplain is very much to support our whole school community, including our students, our families and our staff. Some of the ways I do that is through being available for people to have a chat when they need someone to talk to, promoting kindness with our school wide Kindness Project and running group programs with students such as our HOPE cooking, Bella Girls and the All-Stars Friendship group.

We also run a school brekky club that is available to students each Tuesday and Thursday. Students can come to school from 8am and enjoy some cereal, fruit and toast.

My room up in R Block is open for parents to come up and have a coffee and a Tim Tam on Wednesday mornings after drop off. I would love parents/caregivers to always feel welcome to pop in and chat. Parenting is a blessing but also at times quite challenging and it is such an encouragement to be able to talk to others and help each other. Throughout the year I would also love to encourage you with different articles that you may find helpful in your parenting. Here is a great one from Triple P Parenting to help with the start back to school.

https://www.triplep-parenting.net.au/qld-en/blog-and-more/blog-and-news/post/school-s-back-parenting-tips-to-boost-kids-self-esteem-and-confidence-for-a-new-year/

My room also has a small op shop at the back with second hand uniforms and clothes and homewares. All items are available for just a gold coin donation with all proceeds going straight back into chaplaincy programs. Please feel free to come and have a look and grab a bargain.

I hope you all have a wonderful week and look forward to supporting our amazing school community.

😊 Chappy Jade

The Arts

Clowning Around At Beaudesert

Last week at our school welcomed "Thoughts Have Feelings Too" a thought-provoking, hilarious performance featuring the Professor and Clown. With lots of laughter the duo engaged students from Prep to Year 6 in a journey through different emotions. The whole school especially loved the guest stars, Mr Brimelow and Mr Pellinkhof, in roles like we've never seen them before! The show links beautifully with our year 4-6 Performing Arts units this semester as students explore the world of comedy through dance, drama and music.

Performing Arts

This semester in Performing Arts years 1-2 are exploring Australian Animals through Dance, Drama and Music. Last week students learnt about making a beat and dynamics in music. Creating animal moves to match the sounds they created with their instruments, making decisions about the dynamics of the movements and the sounds as a team.

Design Technology

I’m thrilled to share the exciting developments happening in our Design Technologies classes for our young learners in Years 1 through 2, as well as our eager Preps! This term, our budding designers are delving into the captivating worlds of food and fibre; and creative puppetry.

In our Years 1 to 2 classes, students are embarking on a journey to discover the wonders of food and fibre. Through engaging hands-on activities, they are learning about the origins, uses, and importance of various food and fibre sources. From exploring faming technologies to understanding where our food comes from, our students are gaining valuable insights into sustainability and healthy living.

Meanwhile, our Preps are immersing themselves in the enchanting world of puppetry! With boundless imagination and enthusiasm, they are designing and bringing to life their own unique puppets. From character development to crafting intricate details, our Preps are discovering the joy of storytelling and expression through puppet making.
