Term 2 Week 10

Make My Day!

Last week, three KF students made my day. It’s hard to believe our Kindy students have been with us for just six months and are already writing descriptive sentences. Well done, Darcy, Isabella and Rory for confidently using capital letters, finger spaces, and full stops in their writing—what fantastic progress!

Reports - Parent/ teacher

At Caves Beach Public School, we are dedicated to keeping you informed about your child's academic progress.

Each year, we provide two formal academic reports:

Semester 1 Report: Distributed at the end of Term 2, this report offers a comprehensive overview of your child’s progress during the first half of the year.

Semester 2 Report: Distributed at the end of Term 4, this report summarises your child's progress and achievements in the second half of the year.

It is wonderful to see our students’ progress in their reports. Thank you to our dedicated teachers for preparing reports that showcase each student’s strengths and growth areas—your efforts truly support our students’ success.

If you would like to arrange a time to meet with your child's teachers to discuss the report, please don't hesitate to reach out.

External Validation

This term, we have been busy preparing for External Validation—a valuable opportunity to identify our strengths and areas for future development. Our presentation to the panel is scheduled for early next term.

A dedicated group of teachers has been supporting me with the submission process. I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Miss Heap and Mrs White for their invaluable support. With Mrs Gibson currently on leave, a huge thank you goes to Mrs Tia, who has stepped into my role for External Validation. I truly appreciate the time you have taken away from your class to ensure our school’s submission is of a high standard and genuinely reflects the wonderful things happening here at Caves Beach Public School.

The Change Makers

Students in Years 4–6 were invited to nominate for the Lake Macquarie East Change Makers, Student Voice and Agency Council, an initiative that empowers student leaders to inspire positive change at school, local, and global levels. Our students have submitted their resumes, and we look forward to seeing who will represent our school and champion student voice in our community.

Recognising Student Achievements

We are extremely proud of all our students and the many ways they excel both in and out of school. While we greatly value their efforts, it is not possible for us to acknowledge every individual achievement. Please understand that Facebook and school assemblies are special platforms where we celebrate student contributions specifically related to school events.

We know many students participate in activities outside of school and we are proud of these efforts, but a decision was made to focus our recognition on school events. This is because there are simply too many wonderful achievements outside of school for us to individually acknowledge.

Thank you for being part of our supportive school community.

Kind regards

Lisa Dallaway

Debating

Another WIN for our debaters!

Our Year 5 debating team took on Swansea today in a very close debate. We were the Affirmative team arguing that "The government should give kids $20 of pocket money a week". Our debaters worked extremely hard to write 'on the spot' rebuttals, which gave us the win!

Well done to Sierra, Zoey, Neave and Naomi for an impressive effort and a hard fought win.

Yak Off!

Selected students from each class took to the stage to present their speeches in our school Yak Off competition. It was wonderful to see so many confident and capable speakers sharing their ideas with enthusiasm and skill.

Following the competition, two students from each stage were selected to progress to the next level. Congratulations to all students who presented their speeches. Your preparation, courage and effort were outstanding, and you should be very proud of your achievements.

Congratulations to our winners:

● ES1 – Benjamin and Amelia

● S1 – Gabby and Laynie

● S2 – Hannah and Oscar

● S3 – Nina and Aaylah

We wish our successful speakers the very best of luck as they go on to represent our school at Galgabba and Zone.

Well done to everyone involved!

Starstruck

What a wonderful weekend for our Star Struck students, who performed in two incredible shows on Friday and Saturday night.

After weeks of rehearsals and giving up many lunch times to practise, our students had the amazing opportunity to dance alongside other schools from across the region. Their commitment, enthusiasm and teamwork were outstanding, and they should be very proud of themselves.

A huge thank you to Ms Tonks and Miss Brewster for giving our students the opportunity to be part of such a special and memorable experience.

Well done to everyone involved!

Multicultural Public Speaking

Last week we hosted the local final of the Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking competition. Our very own Grace was awarded WINNER of the Stage 2 competition and will now proceed to the Regional Finals!

Grace and Rogue represented our school for Stage 2 and Nina and Mila represented our school for Stage 3. All students did an exceptional job in a difficult competition. Students had to prepare a planned speech on a multicultural topic and were then given a random topic to prepare an impromptu speech with only 5 minutes planning time. They performed brilliantly under pressure!

Well done Grace, Rogue, Mila and Nina!

Grow Your Mind

A strength you can grow is CREATIVITY.

Being creative means to think of new ways to do things in the

classroom, on the playground or at home.

When we show CREATIVITY we use our ELEPHANT and WISE OWL. This strength is important for our mental health because it helps us find our  state of ‘flow’.

              You can display CREATIVITY by:

  • thinking of multiple ways to solve a problem
  • making up interesting games and exploring different ways to play them
  • writing or drawing something that is unique, just like you
  • starting a new creative activity like singing in the choir, playing a musical instrument or performing in drama

"Creativity doesn't wait for that perfect moment. It creates its own perfect moments out of ordinary ones."

Learning and Support

Building Reading Fluency

When children learn to read, they first focus on decoding or recognising words accurately. As they become more confident, they begin developing reading fluency which is the ability to read fluently, smoothly and with expression.

Fluent readers spend less energy working out individual words and more energy understanding and enjoying what they are reading. This is why fluency is an important bridge between learning to read and reading to learn.

One of the best ways to build fluency is through repeated reading. Re-reading familiar books helps children recognise words more quickly, improve their reading pace, and develop confidence. It also allows them to focus on expression and meaning rather than decoding every word.

Parents can support reading fluency at home by:  • Encouraging your child to re-read favourite books.  • Taking turns reading aloud together.  • Modelling expressive reading by reading to your child.  • Praising smooth, confident reading rather than speed.

Just 10–15 minutes of regular reading practice each day can make a significant difference to your child's reading development.

Athletics Carnival

What a wonderful day we had at our School Athletics Carnival!

The weather stayed kind, energy levels were high, and the tracks were filled with enthusiastic athletes giving their all. Students ran, jumped and threw with determination, while many also enjoyed spending time with friends in the centre of the field, making memories and having fun together.

A huge thank you to our incredible staff, parents, Caves Beach Public School P&C and volunteers in the canteen and on the track who came together to make the day such a success. These events simply wouldn't be possible without your support, enthusiasm and teamwork.

To top it all off, we finished with a fantastic relay featuring our Year 6 students, parents and teachers. The Caves Beach community spirit was on full display, creating an exciting and memorable end to a wonderful day.

Well done to all our students for their participation, sportsmanship and positive attitude. We are so proud of you all!
