St Timothy's School Vermont 2023

Term 3 Week 7 2023

All students at St Timothy's School have the right to feel safe. The care, safety and wellbeing of children and young people is the responsibility of all within our school.

Movie Night

What a wonderful night the children had last night at the Movie Night. A very simple night, but one where the children were able to relax with friends and enjoy just being together. A special thanks to the Rossi family for donating the popcorn. Not only did they bring the amazing machine but they also provided the popcorn and bags and cooked the popcorn. It was great to be able to see, hear and smell the popcorn cooking! What a great atmosphere this created for a movie night!

Thanks also to the many hands that helped with helping serving the children the pizza, ice cream and drinks.

It was also great to see the parents gathering together for a catch up while their children were watching the movie. Looking forward to repeating in 2024!

First Aid Training

Today all our staff completed a general First Aid, Anaphylaxis and CPR course. The teachers had lots of hands on practice and lots of laughs. They previously had to complete a 2 hour online assessment and complete the hands on course achieve 100% on the test to be granted a pass. These courses are completed each year to meet the duty of care expectation for MACS schools.

Celebrate the Learning Showcase

Badminton

This term we have reached out to Badminton Australia/Victoria to provide specialised instruction in Badminton. Our final session is Thursday 24th August. We have also purchased badminton bats, smash bats and shuttles for children to continue to use after our clinics. This has been possible due to the Sporting Schools grant.

Celebrate the Learning Fundraiser

As a part of my trip to Darwin we visited Bathurst Island in the Tiwi Islands. Whilst there we got to meet with Sister Anne (92) who is still working within the community.

We had the pleasure of visiting the little cypress pine mission church which is in serious need of renovation. It was built in 1941by Peter De Hayr.

Every log was put through the mill. No fancy finishes, except the curved timber to give the added beauty to the ceiling. Not one piece of planned timber exist in this beautiful old mission church.

Peter realised that white ants were the number one worry when he begun constructing the church. He found ironwood, cut it into beams and 82 years later those iron wood uprights have saved this beautiful monument that we want to restore to its pristine beauty.

The East Central Zone schools are all conducting a fundraising events to provide funds towards the renovation of this mission church.

I am hoping that St Timothy's can contribute with other East Central Schools with a gold coin or greater donation on our Celebrate the evening night.  Interested to know more ? - See Slideshow including videos ( some shorter than others)

Parish Newsletter Saturday 26th & Sunday 27th August

Like last week’s gospel, this week’s story takes place in a region that was outside predominantly Jewish territory. Caesarea Philippi (north of Galilee and in the region of modern day Syria) had long been a centre of pagan worship. It was used originally by the Canaanites as a site of worship; the Greeks built a temple to one of their gods there; in 20 BCE Herod the Great built a temple to Caesar Augustus; and after his death, Herod’s son, Phillip, renamed the city Caesarea Phillipi after Tiberius Caesar and himself. It is intriguing that Matthew’s gospel chooses such a site as the location for such a significant revelation of faith. Jesus asks the disciples who people say he is. They report that people associate Jesus with one of the great prophets of Jewish tradition. By people identifying Jesus with other great prophets they were projecting Jesus into the same mould as that prophet. What they were saying was that Jesus will be a great leader in the style of John the Baptist, or Elijah or even Jeremiah. The expectation of a messiah was running very high at the time of Jesus and everyone had their own idea about what that messiah would be like – usually aligned with some previous leader. They didn’t seem to understand that Jesus was breaking the mould and was not going to fit in with any of those expectations. To see him as one of the great prophets come again is always going to be an inadequate understanding of Jesus as messiah. When Jesus pushes the disciples for their own ideas, it is Simon Peter who speaks up and identifies Jesus as being the Son of the living God. Making a play on Peter’s name (in Greek, petros = Peter and petra = rock), Jesus states that hereafter, Simon Peter will be known as Peter and upon the rock of his profession of faith the church will be built.

Over the next two weeks we say goodbye to our overseas visitors and wish them a happy and safe return to China. We hope that they will take fond memories of their time at St Timothy's.
