From the Acting Principal

Welcome to the end of Week 4.  This term has seen many fabulous events for our students from sport to career pathways opportunities.  A huge shoutout to families that were involved with the parent / teacher interviews held last week and thank you for your participation in your students’ learning.  The partnerships we create to support the learning and wellbeing of each student is pinnacle to our school.

To all of our students that continue to represent our school at South West, Miles & District and Darling Downs level, you are amazing and we are very proud of your efforts.  This week, we have had students involved with the Wonders of Science, Beyond the Broncos Workshop, Deadly Trackers, Aspire2Health and support with the Biggest Morning Tea. Plenty of photos taken and they can be viewed later in the newsletter.

Last week, I had the opportunity to represent Miles SHS at the Western Downs Future Summit held in Dalby, to discuss with other industries within the Western Downs on how we can make a different to our community for the future.  It was inspiring to talk to other Government and Independent agencies to identify challenges that we have faced, are facing and could face in the future.  By the end of the summit, we all shared a collaborative vision for the direction we hope to take for the next five to ten years.  Of course, there requires further consultation but it allowed members of the summit to become a part of the working party to achieve the shared vision.  There will be more shared in the near future.

As the weather takes a turn to the cool side, please remember to pack a school jumper for your student.  It has been terrific to see so many students wearing the new sports attire from Abrahams.  Reports so far from the students have been positive and they look great.

Please note, we will have our next P & C Meeting, Wednesday 17 May from 3.30pm in the MPA Conference room and everyone is welcome to attend.

Please also remember our Miles Show holiday will be held on Tuesday 23 May of Week 6.

Have a wonderful fortnight.

Raelene Bates

From the Deputy Principal

For the past 2 weeks, I have filled Ms Raelene Bates’ responsibilities while she performs Mrs Moffatt’s role while she is on Leave.

One of our ongoing strategies is to encourage engagement (support attendance, follow up late arrivals / frequent absences, monitor / link to support for difficulties with attendance). Each parent/carer of a child who is of compulsory school age has the legal obligation to ensure their child is enrolled and attends a school, on every school day for the educational program in which the child is enrolled, unless the parent has a reasonable excuse. Therefore our school follows a range of processes to monitor student absences.

  • If you know your child will be absent, please contact the office.
  • If you receive an SMS, please respond with why they are not at school.
  • If an absence letter is sent home, please respond by explaining why your student has been absent.
  • If students fall below 85% attendance or there are 10 more absences without reasonable excuses, a meeting will be scheduled to investigate strategies available to re-engage your child.
  • Please remember that if your child is late to school, they will make up lost time at morning tea where Mr Moore (HOD – Engagement and Wellbeing) will follow up.

I have been making classroom visits to support students to follow school / classroom expectations. Clarification has been provided regarding several issues which are impacting on student time in class and teaching and learning time.

  • In most classes students are required to sit in a seating plan and if adjustments to where students sit are required, it is expected that students follow these requests without argument.
  • Toilet breaks – every day there are many students who are requesting to leave class 10-15 minutes after a break to go to the toilet or get a drink. It is reasonable to expect that students have 2 breaks of 40 minutes. This is ample time for them to do this in the lunch times – not in teaching and learning time.
  • All students are required to get permission to leave the classroom – the process is that students complete their diary stating the reason for leaving and the teacher signs/puts the time they leave and return.
  • Routines – bells signify when students move to class – it is reasonable that students make their way to their classes in a timely manner and not remain in the playground or bathrooms.
  • Lining up – students are requested to unpack their bags on arrival to their class, prepare for class by getting their diary, pencil case and subject materials and then line up.

Students who persist in ignoring these expected routines or staff instructions may expect to spend some of their lunch time to follow up on missed work or for staff to work on their awareness of school routines.  I will be asking staff to communicate these instances to families so that together, we can support improved behavioural and academic outcomes for all students.

  • Respectful language and behaviours – when there are behaviour challenges or problems experienced among students / friendship groups, there is generally an investigation involving teachers / witnessing adults, individual students involved or nearby. Students /Staff involved may have to complete an Incident Statement form to allow all perspectives to be viewed before actions / consequences are implemented. These forms are available from any teacher or at the Flexi centre so that students have the opportunity to report issues. If parents have any concerns or queries, see the Communication Flowchart for information about who to contact.

Have a great weekend. To all our mums, I hope you enjoy some time with family on Sunday, being Mothers’ Day.

From Head of Wellbeing & Engagement

Hello everyone and welcome to the end of Week 4.

Over the last fortnight we have seen many exciting opportunities for our students. On Tuesday Miles SHS unveiled the Red Bench Project in conjunction with the Western Downs Regional Council. Miles SHS were fortunate enough to be provided the opportunity to design and construct a red bench to be placed at Miles Hospital as a reminder of domestic violence. This project shows the connection Miles SHS has with the community and the skills that our students have. Please take a drive by the Miles Hospital and appreciate the efforts provided by our students.

This week we had our Term 2 workshop from Beyond the Broncos which work tirelessly with our First Nation students. It is always a valuable experience for our students as they learn about their cultures and histories.

Student attendance is pivotal in the development of educational and social skills. Here at Miles SHS, we are working to increase student attendance rates and are tracking all students weekly. Families of students with attendance rates of less than 85% are being contacted and we are putting strategies in place to support the engagement of these young individuals. Currently Miles SHS has an overall attendance rate of 84.2%. We are striving to raise this attendance rate to 90% and with the constant check ins and support we are getting closer. Please remind your students how important attendance is in their future development. Students who had an attendance rate of 95% or above will be recognised at the next full school assembly.

Have a great fortnight 🙂

Allow others to teach and learn

Our new banner can be found in each classroom displaying the expectation of our students in allowing others to teach and learn.  As part of Positive Behaviour, we illustrate the benefits of following our school expectations and the logical consequences when we don't.

From Head of Curriculum

Well, term 2 is quickly disappearing and the next round of assessment are descending. This means that there are large amounts of skills that students will be demonstrating to their teachers. To help students navigate the large number of skills that are required during assessment pieces the school is directing students to an online resource called “the study skills handbook”. Here students, parents and teachers can find a wide array of guided lessons to help break down skills into manageable chunks. These include things like research skills, writing skills, computer skills and improving how you study. There is a whole heap more if you would like to take a look. These guided lessons are a great way for students to work on skills that they find difficult or are unsure how to start. It is worth a bit of time to check it out and see if there is something there to help your student.

Wonder of Science

On Monday 8th May, four year 7 students participated in a Wonder of Science incursion. In period 1 students listened to a short presentation from Selwin Samiel and Rosie Stoke who represented Wonder of Science. The students then completed an experiment where two students investigated the effect of launch angles on the distance a matchbox could travel, while the other two students investigated the effect of the size of the matchbox on the distance it would travel. In period 2, the students worked with Selwin and Rosie on creating their rockets for the project and trialling different styles. Miss Jenko looks forward to seeing their final rocket design and helping the students test their rockets.

Aspire2Health Excursion

Designed for Year’s 9 and 10 high school students with an interest in a health career, Aspire2Health is a collaboration between Griffith University, UQ, Uni SQ, and Southern Queensland Regional Health. Eleven students from Miles SHS travelled to Chinchilla Hospital on Tuesday 9.5.23, where they were involved in a number of simulated scenarios lead by a range of health professionals and students currently studying in a range of health fields. The main message of the day was that quality healthcare is a huge team effort requiring the input of multiple highly trained professionals. Many thanks to the students for their engagement and participation – this was such a valuable opportunity for students who are considering a career in the health industry. Thankyou also to Mr Daniel Daveson for giving up his day to transport us to this event. For more information on the Aspire 2 Health program, various options for training / education in this broad field, scholarships, etc, go to: https://ruralmeded.org.au/

Murilla Garden Club Biggest Morning Tea

On Wednesday 11th of May, I was fortunate enough to accompany seven of our Year 9 and Year 10 students to the beautiful “Dogwood Bend” for the annual Murilla Garden Club Biggest Morning Tea fundraiser.  The students were given the opportunity to hone their hospitality skills whilst helping their community to raise vital funds for Life Flight and other charities.  I was so proud of Rahnee, Ingrid, Zayleigh, Amity, Aleesha, Gabi and Nishi, for the positive and respectful way they represented our school.  From serving food and drinks to helping with the cent auction, even packing up a huge number of tables, chairs and tablecloths. Nothing was a chore for this bunch of lovely young ladies.  We received many comments on how polite and friendly our students were, which is always lovely to hear.

Days like this allow the students to see the positive impact that they can have in their community and how different groups work together for a shared objective.

Thanks must go to the Murilla Garden Club for inviting us to your event and a huge thank you also goes to Mr Ken Brown for being our chauffeur.  We look forward to doing it all again in 2024.

Year 7 HPE

In this term 2, Year 7 students will learn some athletic techniques and skills to encourage them to play organized sport and athletes. It is a great opportunity for them to develop a sense of autonomy and confidence. They will experience and learn how to do long jump, shot put, sprinting, high jump, and other athletes. As part of the Australian Curriculum, it is important for students to learn the correct procedure with athletics to prevent injury, therefore, we encourage all students to engage, participate and have a go.

Mr Leong

Year 9/10 HPE & Year 11/12 Sport and Recreation

The last few weeks have been a busy time for senior HPE classes, with Mrs Hoonhout’s 11/12 Recreational Studies students busy undertaking a coaching and umpiring unit, whereby they film, analyse and improve their coaching and umpiring performance over a number of weeks. In order to complete the task, they required a sport and a class. Mr Maag’s 9/10 HPE class was only too happy to oblige, opting to play touch football. Following a few weeks of mock games, with year 11 and 12 students learning game rules and umpiring signals, and year 9/10 students patiently developing skills and competence, it was time for the recording to begin. Touch games were filmed, then carefully and critically analysed, with year 11/12 students making a plan to improve. Following analysis, senior students again recorded their coaching and umpiring performance of the year 9/10 students. This time implementing what they had learned following examination of their prior recorded performance. Both classes showed outstanding ability to analyse their own and others performance, while also accepting constructive feedback and patiently developing skills and abilities through various stages of an athletes learning.

The next P&C Meeting is on Wednesday 17th May at 3:30pm in the MPA Conference Room.

Thank you!

Miles SHS has recently been the very grateful recipient of 72 near new tennis balls from the Miles Tennis Club. The donation was kindly made by Diane Gray on behalf of the club. With tennis balls used by the students for a myriad of activities besides tennis, the donation has left extra money in the schools coffers that can now be redirected to other sporting accoutrements.
