Dear Parents/Caregivers,
World Teachers’ Day Friday 27 October
World Teachers’ Day is celebrated every year on October 27. It allows us to show our appreciation for the work teachers do and to celebrate their accomplishments.
Teaching is one of the most honourable and challenging of professions. Teachers play a vital role in giving young people the skills and confidence to achieve the most in life. Most of us as adults can point to teachers who have made a difference in our own lives.
The biggest reward for most teachers is to take young people from strength to strength through their teaching and to see their confidence and capacities grow.
World Teachers’ Day provides the perfect opportunity for us to pay tribute to the teachers here at Burton. I urge parents and students to show their appreciation for the ongoing contribution and commitment of the teachers at this school.
The New Strategy for Public Education in South Australia
A new strategy for SA public education- called Learn and Thrive- has been released. Within Learn and Thrive there are 4 main “areas of impact” that have been prioritised. These 4 “areas of impact” are:
1. Effective Learners
2. Wellbeing
3. Excellence and Equity
4. Learner Agency (student voice)
To introduce the new strategy to you, we will include one of the 4 areas of impact in coming newsletters. This week’s area of impact is Learner Agency.
Learner Agency
Our learners will be empowered to develop a sense of identity and responsibility as they participate in their school community, and are supported to play a role in shaping their learning experiences.
Learners will have a say and ‘own’ what they learn and how they learn.
Learners will be active partners in their learning and school life, collaborating with both teachers and peers to create a dynamic and engaging educational experience.
Student Voice (learner agency) is also one of the five elements of the Australian Student Wellbeing Framework. When students have authentic opportunities to be active participants in their own learning and school life, they feel connected and are able to use their social and emotional skills to be respectful, resilient and safe.
Colour Run
Friday’s Colour Run was another fantastic event. The weather was excellent, and parent attendance was high.
Thank you to all staff for the way they worked to make the event so successful and enjoyable.
Special thanks to Gill Hadden, Ben Williams and our Governing Council Fundraising Committee for their organisation. The money raised will be used to purchase new SAPSASA uniforms, and also to improve security at the front gate.
Next Pupil Free Day
Our last Pupil Free Day for 2023 is on Monday November 6. (week 4) School staff will use the day to review the improvements we have made in 2023, and then develop our 2024 School Improvement Plan.
OSHC is available for this day, so please book early as places fill up quickly.
Staffing News
I have decided that it is time to retire, so 2023 will be my last year in education. The Principal position at Burton has therefore been advertised state-wide. A selection panel made up of the local Education Director, our Governing Council Chairperson, an elected Burton staff representative and another principal from a similar school is meeting to select the next Burton Principal. This will be announced before the end of the school year.
Also, Mr Nick Porublev, our Pastoral Support Worker (PSW), has finished his time here at Burton. We are now moving to find his successor. We have applied to the government to secure funding to have a PSW at Burton for the next five years.
