Principal's Message

Dear Families,

It is hard to believe that we are already five weeks into the school year. The term has begun with great energy and purpose, and it has been wonderful to see our students settling into their routines and embracing their learning.

Over the past weeks, our classrooms from Preschool to Year 6, have been focused on establishing strong foundations—clear expectations, positive learning habits, and supportive relationships. I have been impressed by the way students have begun to demonstrate responsibility, resilience, and respect as they adapt to new year levels, teachers, and learning experiences.

Our staff have worked diligently to ensure each classroom is a safe and engaging environment where every child feels known and valued.

Thank you to our families for your continued partnership. Your support with routines, communication, and encouragement at home plays a significant role in your child’s success at school.  Partnerships with our parents are very important to us, and we greatly value the vital role you play in your child’s education.

As we move further into the term, we look forward to upcoming events and opportunities for connection within our school community. From the week beginning March 2, Meet the Teacher afternoons will be held across the week from 3:15 to 4pm.

Monday 2 March – Kindergarten

Tuesday 3 March – Year 1 and 2

Wednesday 4 March – Year 3 and 4, Kookaburras and Owls

Thursday 5 March – Year 5 and 6

If you would like to ask specific questions about your child’s progress, please contact the school office to arrange an appointment with the teacher. Catching the teacher as students are arriving or entering the classroom is not a good time, as they are supervising the class and preparing students for learning. It also does not allow for the privacy and confidentiality these conversations deserve.

Scheduling a dedicated time ensures discussions about your child are respectful, meaningful, and convenient for both you and the teacher.

Thank you for being an important part of our school community.

Donna McGeary - Principal

🐾 Welcome Back Luna and Gen! 🐾

Punchbowl Public School is excited to welcome Luna and her handler Gen back to PPS as part of our partnership with THERAPuppy. In Term 1 Luna and Gen will be onsite from 8:30am on Thursdays. Luna will be ready to welcome you at the main gate.

Luna, our gentle and friendly Labrador, will attend school on scheduled days and remain on a lead under Gen’s supervision at all times. Therapy dogs support students with emotional regulation, confidence, motivation and positive social interactions, and we are thrilled to continue offering this wonderful wellbeing initiative.

If your child has a fear of dogs or allergies, please contact the school so we can ensure appropriate support is in place.

We look forward to many more 'pawsitive' moments with Luna and Gen at PPS throughout 2026.

    Preschool & Early Intervention

    Preschool

We are thrilled to see our preschool children settling so well into their new environment. It has been lovely to watch them make new friends, explore the learning spaces, and become comfortable with daily routines.

This term has also seen the exciting start of our gymnastics program, providing the children with wonderful opportunities to develop their coordination, balance, and confidence in a fun and supportive setting.

It has been a busy start to the term, and we’re proud of how quickly the children are adapting and embracing all the activities. We look forward to many more moments of growth, play, and friendship in the weeks ahead.

    Early Intervention

We are excited to welcome our new children and families to the Early Intervention Program this term. It has been wonderful to see the children settling smoothly into their new environment, getting familiar with daily routines, and building friendships along the way.

We look forward to supporting each child’s individual journey, creating a nurturing and engaging space where they can grow, learn, and thrive. The term ahead will be filled with discovery, development, and joyful experiences, and we can't wait!

    Early Stage 1

    Celebrating Everyday Bravery

We’ve seen so many moments worth celebrating:

    • Students trying something for the first time

    • Asking for help when they need it

    • Showing patience and persistence

    • Making new friends and joining new games

These small acts of bravery show that kindergarten really is up to the challenge.

    Stage 1

Stage 1 students have had a positive start to the school year. It has been wonderful to see smiling faces on our return, reconnecting with friends and settling back into classroom routines and learning.

Over the past few weeks 2GF have been focusing on establishing classroom expectations and developing their PAX vision. Students have been revisiting daily routines, identifying green behaviours and practising working collaboratively with their peers. They have also been engaging with our learning dispositions through “We can” statements, building their understanding of how to be responsible, respectful and reflective learners. This has enabled students to form a deeper connection and curiosity around their learning.

Student voices from recent 4C’s processes:

“We can take it in turns when we work in small groups.” Cooper 2GF

“We can help our partners with ideas.” Fatima 2GF

“We can work together to solve problems.” Victory 2GF

“We can use our partners ideas to help us.” Ahmad 2GF

“We can use hand signals to show when we agree or disagree.” Subhan 2GF

We look forward to a term filled with growth, curiosity, and exciting learning opportunities.

    Inclusive Education Classes

The Inclusive Education Classes at Punchbowl Public School proudly moved into their brand-new building this year, and it has already made a wonderful impact on students and staff. The modern learning spaces are bright, welcoming, and thoughtfully designed to support a range of learning needs. Students are loving their new classrooms, enjoying the flexible spaces, updated resources, and comfortable environments that help them feel engaged and supported every day. The new building has created an exciting fresh start and a positive place where every student can thrive.

    Stage 2

In English this term, Stage 2 are analysing a text called Rowan of Rin. Students are exploring characterisation and how authors use inner monologues and rhetorical questions to develop characters. Through group discussions and shared reading students are building confidence in understanding character perspectives, and are really enjoying uncovering the hidden thinking behind dialogue. Students are also eagerly sharing their insights, and have made thoughtful connections between characters questions, and their personal growth throughout the story.

    Stage 3

Wow! What an amazing five weeks 6C have had at school. We have settled back into our school routines and are excited to take on our role as leaders of the school. It has been a busy and rewarding start to the year, and we have already learnt so much.

In English, we are exploring narratives through the text Storm Boy. We have been developing our understanding of characters, settings, and themes while making thoughtful connections to the story. In Mathematics, we are focusing on partitioning numbers and understanding place value parts and strengthening our number sense and problem-solving skills.

In Gymnastics, students have been learning how to jump and land safely, practicing control, balance, and coordination during each session.

To brighten our classroom, we have been busy creating drawings of pelicans, inspired by Storm Boy. We named our pelicans, Mr. Percival, linking our creative artwork to the text we are studying. Our classroom is now filled with colour, creativity, and meaningful connections to our learning.

    Highlights from the students:

"My highlight has been finding out my class and the peers who were in it." - Fatima

"I have enjoyed learning about place value and decimals." - Mohamad

"I have enjoyed learning about multiplying and dividing by 10." - Yamen

"I have enjoyed learning about the story of Storm Boy and place value." - Abrita

We are looking forward to an exciting term ahead!

    Library

Library Focus: Responsible Online Behaviour and Safety

Our students are learning about responsible behaviour online. This includes the importance of protecting personal information and understanding the potential risks & consequences of poor choices when using technology.

The program is designed to help students to make safer and smarter decisions in the digital world by raising awareness of online dangers while gaming or viewing content

For Parents: To support you in fostering online safety at home, please visit the following website: https://www.esafety.gov.au/parents/resources/online-safety-for-every-family

This resource offers helpful information sheets. The information sheets are available in multiple languages, including Arabic, Vietnamese, Chinese, and Dari.

So far, our students have learned

Stage 1 – Being Responsible Online: Zayed: “If anyone asks you for your name or where you live, never tell them. Tell your mum and dad. You can only trust your mum, dad, or teacher.”

Stage 2 – Protecting Personal Information: Ibrahim: “Don’t give people your number or address.” Assem: “You should not give your password to anyone.”

Stage 3 – Understanding Consequences of Online Behaviour: Naifa: “To do well at school, you must limit your time playing games online, or you won’t do well.” Afra: “Playing games late at night affects our grades because we don’t get enough sleep.” Benji: “Whatever you do online will impact your life and can have good or bad consequences. For example, from the video we watched, Bianca felt sad because of the bad comments posted about her.”

    Community Language - Arabic

We warmly welcome all families to the new school year and look forward to a wonderful year of learning and growing together. Our students have begun their Community Language classes with great enthusiasm, engaging in interactive activities, games, songs and creative tasks that make language learning both meaningful and enjoyable. In class, we brainstormed ways to be smart at whatever we do, using Focus and Grit.  It has been delightful to see their confidence grow as they explore new words and cultural experiences. We encourage parents to support their child’s language learning at home by showing interest, practising simple vocabulary together and celebrating their progress. Your encouragement plays an important role in strengthening their confidence and deepening their connection to the language and its culture.

    Mrs Roffaell and Mrs Awada.

    Genius Hour

Welcome to another year of exploration and discovery in Genius Hour.

The Importance of Teamwork in Building Shared Understandings in Science and Geography During Genius Hour

Collaborative learning in science and geography fosters deeper and more meaningful understanding through the construction of shared knowledge. When students work in teams during Genius Hour, they bring diverse perspectives and ideas, which enrich discussions and promote critical thinking—an essential concept emphasised by educational theorist. By engaging with peers, students critically evaluate information, ask probing questions, and challenge assumptions, leading to a more rigorous exploration of complex topics.

Genius Hour focus on student-centred learning highlights the importance of learners taking ownership of their educational journey. In team settings during Genius Hour, students actively participate, negotiate meaning, and co-create knowledge rather than passively receiving information. This approach not only enhances comprehension but also builds communication skills, empathy, and collaboration abilities—skills vital for real-world scientific and geographic problem-solving.

Overall, teamwork during Genius Hour nurtures an environment where critical thinking flourishes, and learning becomes a dynamic, social process that empowers students to construct robust, shared understandings.

Looking forward to all the projects we have planned to engage in.

    Warmest regards

    Mrs Yasin
