Disability Inclusion at Mansfield Primary School

At Mansfield Primary School we believe every child has the right to be a child. To play, to laugh and to learn with their peers which is why we are excited to introduce The Department of Education’s new funding system designed to better support all children in schools; Disability Inclusion.

Disability Inclusion is the ongoing commitment in which all staff work collaboratively with families, students and the wider community to ensure that every child, at every ability, thrives.   Disability Inclusion at MPS is driven by the belief that every child should be given the opportunity to:

  • Learn alongside their peers
  • Play and laugh with their peers
  • Participate in all that school has to offer alongside their peers
  • Make a difference, just by being them

This year Mansfield Primary School will begin introducing some changes to help us strengthen support for students with disability.

Disability Inclusion will help our school better understand what our students need to help them learn and participate at school. It involves:

  • a new Disability Inclusion Profile and school funding model to strengthen support for students with disability
  • more resources, training and coaching for our teachers and school staff about the best ways to support students with disability
  •  the introduction of a Disability Inclusion Learning Specialist
  •  expansion of intervention programs such as MacqLit

The Disability Inclusion Profile will be available to help us identify the strengths, needs, and educational adjustments we can make to assist students with disability and additional learning needs.

The Disability Inclusion Profile replaces the Program for Students with Disabilities (PSD) application process.

Over the coming years, we will invite families of students who are currently part of the PSD, and other students with disability and additional learning needs, to participate in a meeting to complete a Disability Inclusion Profile.

We will use new school funding and supports for more training and professional development for teachers and school staff, expert advice about disability to help plan and deliver changes for students, and resources to support learning.

The new Disability Inclusion approach ensures our school is better able to continue to support students with disability and additional learning needs.

Mansfield Primary School is excited to be part of Disability Inclusion and we look forward to continuing to support our students to learn and thrive.

If you have any questions about your child’s learning or Disability Inclusion, or need translation or interpreting assistance, please contact:

The Hike to the top

By Ruby, Zali and Amy

Stepping off the bus a cold thick breeze blew past, making 80 Grade 6s shiver. Most believed no rain would fall until later in the day but as we were grouping up, we were deceived, and it began to trickle.  People hurried for their rain jackets as the trickle became a downpour. Then we began to climb up the rocky wet pathway until we were coated in mist. People yanked beanies and gloves as the chill rushed through into their bodies.

We had just passed stump 4 out of 5. We began to emerge from the trees and could see the top beginning to form. As we started to reach the open muddy land several people struggled to stay upright as they slipped and received a humorous laugh. We struggled but didn’t realize how much more difficult it was as we reached the steep slates of rock. After trudging through the mud and rocks we finally reached the tippy top of Mt Timbertop.

Regional Cross Country

On Friday 16th June, Mansfield Primary School had 15 students go through and compete at the Regional Cross Country at the Benalla Showgrounds.

It was a perfect Cross Country day, with a cold morning start but finishing with the sun out.

MPS students ran hard and cheered even harder. It’s a tough event to compete in and all students should be commended for making it this far.

It was also great to see so many supporters there cheering on all Mansfield students, so thank you to all those parents and family members for their support.

Well done to the Regional Team:

GIRLS: Scout Gardner, Miranda Ingpen, Zali Hopkins, Sophie Snell, Eadie Gardner, Arrie Turner, Rachel Mercieca, Dekoda Beekman and Josephine Taylor

Boys: Cooper Hoebergen, Roy Mercieca, Angus Vasey, Harry Buscombe, Zac Borg and Jack Clydesdale

A massive congratulations to 4 students who have placed in the top 12, seeing them a place at State, which will be on Thursday 13th July.

Well done to Zali Hopkins who places 4th, Rachel Mercieca who placed 6th, Cooper Hoebergen who placed 3rd and Jack Clydesdale who placed 3rd.

Good luck to those 4 students at State. An amazing achievement.

The Resilience Project

This next presentation fromThe Resilience Project is all about Empathy and Kindness.  Empathy is our ability to put ourselves in the shoes of others to feel and see what they do. We practice this through being kind and compassionate towards other people. Brain imaging data shows that being kind to others registers in the brain as more like eating chocolate than like fulfilling an obligation to do what’s right (e.g., eating brussel sprouts)! Research shows that practicing empathy, such as performing acts of kindness, taps into our brain’s ‘mirror neurons’, builds compassion and our behaviour becomes more social and community-based. View Part 3 of the series here: Part 3 - Empathy:https://theresilienceproject.com.au/2023-parent-carer-hub-inspire-hugh/

Here’s an activity to practise empathy and kindness:

  • Reflect on someone in your life who could benefit from an act of kindness today. It could be a friend who would love some affirmation about their work, your pet who deserves an extra treat, or a family member who would love a phone call or text message.
  • Make a plan for who you are going to give an act of kindness to, and what you are going to do.
  • If you want to add accountability to your plan, share it with someone else and encourage them to do the same thing.
  • Follow up with each other in a few days time, to ask how it went!
