Principal’s Report

Mrs Chant

We are approaching the end of Term 2 and time sure flies!

Winter Uniforms

We have seen an amazing take up of our free winter uniform initiative and we ask that families clearly label their child’s uniform and other personal belongings so that we can get the item back to you if it finds itself in lost property. Free winter uniform sizes are now limited but please continue to check in with the front office team in case we have your child’s size.

We also have frozen food packages to gift to families in need. You can email me directly on achan224@eq.edu.au to arrange a pack and we will happily help you where we can.

Students are required to wear the full school uniform at Beaudesert State School each day. This includes the school shirt, maroon shorts or skirt, plain socks, school jumper/jacket or plain maroon jumper and track pants. A maroon school hat is also expected. Students can wear closed in shoes of their choice as long as they can run and play safely in them. Students can wear one watch, sleepers or studs are the only type of earring acceptable. Students should have no more than two studs or sleepers in each ear lobe (under Workplace Health and Safety). All bracelets, anklets and necklaces are to be taken off when at school. The only exception to this rule is a pre-organised sensory necklace approved by our HOSES, Nicole Inder. The wearing of jewellery which has a religious significance must be discussed with the Administration.

Term 3 preparation

As we approach school holidays, please check that your child has all items they need to start Term 3. You may also like to check in with your child’s teacher to see if they need additional stationary items for Semester 2. You can do this by emailing your teacher.

Social Media Concerns

Our staff are noticing students as young as Prep accessing social media such as TikTok, Snapchat, Facebook, Instagram, Messenger Kids, YouTube and Online chat in multiplayer video games, like Fortnite, League of Legends, Clash of Clans and The Sims, to name a few.

Using social media often involves uploading and sharing content. This includes:

  • creating online profiles
  • posting comments or chatting
  • uploading photos and videos
  • reacting to or ‘liking’ other people’s posts
  • sharing links
  • tagging photos and content
  • creating and sharing game modifications
  • remixing or changing existing content and sharing it.

Social media can also pose risks. For your child, these risks could include:

  • being exposed to inappropriate or upsetting content, like mean aggressive, violent or sexual comments or images.
  • uploading inappropriate content, like embarrassing or provocative photos or videos of themselves or others.
  • sharing personal information with strangers – for example, images, date of birth, location or address.
  • cyberbullying.
  • being exposed to too much targeted advertising and marketing.
  • being exposed to data breaches, like having their data sold on to other organisations.

Students are also known to create accounts under alternate names with their parents unaware. The Department of Education blocks student access to all social media accounts on school devices and student email accounts are closely monitored for inappropriate activity. Our school team are greatly concerned around the access students are having to social media, the negative impact it is having on relationships between students at school and the language and behaviour we are seeing as they copy what they observe online. Students at our school are not at the age to access social media accounts and we need your help in keeping our students safe online. I have added in information brochures around how to keep students safe online at home. Paper copies are available on request via the front office. If you have a concern around online behaviour, this needs to be reported to the local police station in the first instance.

ThinkUKnow – Online Safety Program

On Thursday 20th June we will welcome the local police and a representative from the Federal Police to deliver the ThinkUKnow program. This age appropriate and annual program is presented to students in Prep – Year 6 covering topics to teach our children the basics of online safety. While we also cover online safety in our ICT curriculum, it is your family responsibility to ensure your child is safe online at home and that inappropriate behaviour resulting from online activity is not brought into the school grounds.

Please follow the link to find several information brochures around how to keep students safe online at home.

Report Cards

Report cards will be emailed to families on the last day of term. Please ensure you have a valid email account on our school records by calling 5540 1111. We are also happy to provide paper copies of report cards at your request. These can also be arranged by calling the office.

Parent Teacher Interviews

Our last Parent Teacher interviews for the year will be held on Monday 22nd July from 3:10pm – 6:30pm in our Hall. Please keep an eye on Audiri to schedule a meeting with your teacher. The link will be released early Term 3.

Parent and Community Code of Conduct

Our school strives to be a safe place for students to learn and for staff to work. In support of this, we have adopted a Parent and Community Code of Conduct so that all visitors to our school can understand what is expected of them. This Code has the support of our P&C.

The Parent and Community Code of Conduct sits alongside our Student Code of Conduct and the Code of Conduct for the Queensland Public Service which applies to all staff.

A copy of the new Code can be found at https://education.qld.gov.au/parents/community-engagement/Documents/parent-community-code-of-conduct.pdf

We expect that families, staff, volunteers and students can come to school and not hear swearing at the front gate or to be sworn at during a conversation. We also expect that parents do not try to discipline or solve a behaviour conflict with another child on school grounds. Thank you for reading and following our Parent and Community Code of Conduct.

Reporting Concerns

If you have a concern, including a report about bullying, for your child, please email your class teacher in the first instance so that they are aware of the situation and can act accordingly. We are seeing increasing amounts of parent admin referrals that can be solved by contacting the classroom teacher and respectfully discussing your concerns. Our staff are happy for you to email them directly.

Athletics Carnival

Our Year 3-6 Athletics Carnival will be held on Wednesday 12th June from 9:00am on the oval. Families are expected to conduct themselves in line with the Parent and Community Code of Conduct at all times. We look forward to seeing families join us on this day to cheer on our students.

True Sessions

A reminder that at the end of this term, Year 3 and 6 students will be involved in a relationship and sexuality education program run collaboratively with True Relationships & Reproductive Health and our classroom teachers.

True recognises that you are the primary sexuality educator of your child and that parents/carers and schools can work together to encourage healthy behaviours and attitudes about sexuality & bodies. The following information may be useful to start discussions with your child, so that you have the opportunity to reinforce appropriate behaviours, new skills and discuss your family’s values, attitudes and beliefs about these topics.

Please check out the attached letters below for further information.

I wish you all a very safe and happy winter break.

Attendance

Students need to be coming to school every day to ensure that they are receiving the best education possible. I understand that we are now entering cold and flu season but please contact the school if your student is absent, this can be done via text message, email or a phone call.

The attendance data for the year to date is currently at 83.8%. We have 27.5% of students who have chronic absenteeism. Some attendance is as low as 20% which is unacceptable. If you are choosing not to send your child to school without a valid reason then further actions may be taken.

The table below shows just how much of their education your children are missing out on due to their non-attendance. Our teachers are amazing but unfortunately if your child is not attending school, they cannot teach them.

Below is the table to document the YTD attendance. Congratulations to Prep A, Prep B, Prep C, 3A  and 4A who are all above 90%. There needs to be a massive improvement as our attendance is incredibly low.

If you are struggling to get your child to school there are many agencies such as Beaucare, Family and Child Connect that can help you get your child to school.

Classroom Reports

Year 3

What a great term it has been in Year 3!

As we approach the end of this term, we wanted to take a moment to reflect on the wonderful progress and achievements our Year 3 students have made. It has truly been a rewarding and productive term, filled with exciting learning opportunities and remarkable growth in various subjects.

English: In English, the students wrote retells of their preferred narratives, thoughtfully explaining why these stories were their favourites. They demonstrated a deep appreciation for the texts by discussing the images and expressing how they felt connected to the characters and events in the story.

Mathematics: Our focus in Maths has been on measurement, as well as number and place value. The students have developed a strong understanding of these fundamental concepts through a range of engaging activities and hands-on experiences.

Science: In Science, we embarked on an exciting journey to learn about the Sun, Earth, and Moon. The students explored how these celestial bodies interact and affect our daily lives, such as creating day and night. Their curiosity and eagerness to understand these phenomena have led to many fascinating discussions, fostering a deep appreciation for the wonders of our universe.

Media: This term in Media, the students put their creative talents to use by designing enlistment posters. They learned about the importance of visual communication and the impact of persuasive imagery. The resulting posters were both imaginative and thoughtful, showcasing their ability to convey powerful messages through art.

Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS): In HASS, our focus was on the significance of historical events and how our community has evolved over time. The students engaged in exploring their local history, understanding how past events have shaped the present. This exploration has not only enhanced their knowledge of history but also deepened their connection to their community.

Overall, it has been a fantastic term filled with learning, growth, and creativity. We are incredibly proud of the hard work and dedication our Year 3 students have shown. We look forward to continuing this journey with them and witnessing their further development in the coming terms.

Thank you for your ongoing support and involvement in your child’s education. Your encouragement and engagement play a crucial role in their success.

Wishing you all a restful and enjoyable break.

Warm regards,

The Year 3 Teachers

Year 4

Here we are once again, right in the midst of a very busy time of the term. Time flies when you are working hard and having an awesome time!

We have had such a wonderful term, and have especially enjoyed Science. It’s been experiments galore and we have had a lot of fun making and testing our paper helicopters, experimenting with push and pull (contact and non-contact) forces, friction and gravity, all while trialling these amazing flying machines.

To follow on from these fun experiments in Science, our Design unit has allowed us to put all of our knowledge about forces into the creation of a pinball machine. We think it’s fair to say that our pinball machine construction has definitely been such a highlight of the term! Students have shown awesome skill and persistence designing, constructing, testing and altering these to ensure the ‘fun factor’. They have worked hard to improve functionality, all while once again experimenting with push and pull (contact and non-contact) forces, friction and gravity.

We are all particularly impressed by the enthusiasm, effort and standard of focus put into the researching, planning and writing of our Historical Recounts (Diary Entry), which is our English assessment for this term. Students have done well understanding the importance of sequencing in chronological order, and how the use of language features can help build tension in their writing.

This term we have also seen Pikachu come and visit our classrooms for a week, due to our exceptional behaviour during specialist lessons. Congratulations also goes to all the students who are achieving their Bronze and Silver Certificates, well done!

Year 6

Wow what a great term we’ve had! With only a couple of weeks to go, we’ll fill you in on some of the amazing things we’ve been getting up to. In English, the students have been wowing us with their descriptive language and creating some extremely exciting stories. They might be the next budding JK Rowling. In maths, we’ve been learning about fractions and if you ask most of the kids, they are probably thrilled the unit is over. We’ve also been learning about angles and measurement. Science has been an engaging unit! In this class we have been creating electrical circuits, looking at sources of energy and renewable energy and we have been challenging the students to create security devices for their desks. We promise no one was harmed! In HASS, we’ve been learning about consumers, trade offs and opportunity costs. Hopefully the students will be more aware when hounding you for something and more aware of financial costs of items. We have a big term next term… CAMP! Something we are all looking forward to, so until then I’ll be catching up on my beauty sleep (we are going to need it). So, take care and have a great break!

From your Year 6 Teachers,

Mrs Foster, Mrs Morgan, Miss Stekhoven and Mrs Russell.

Lost Property

As always, we have a mountain of lost property piling up at school. A lot of it is unnamed which makes it extremely hard to get it returned to the rightful owner. If your student has lost any items direct them to the lost property bins which are located under A Block Administration Building, or you're welcome to pop in for a look yourselves. Please check there if your children are missing any of their belongings.

LOTE - Japanese

In Japanese this term, our students have been learning one of the 3 Japanese alphabets called hiragana.  They have also learnt the art of writing them. There are 46 basic letters and they have learnt between 20-25 of them so far.   The students have learnt the letters with stories, so please be sure to ask your child about it.  Many know them off by heart.  The basic pattern goes a, i, u, e, o, ka, ki, ku, ke, ko and so on.  I have been most impressed with their efforts.  They are very clever indeed.

One of our Year 1 classes have been enjoying some basic Japanese culture and language with me as well.

I would like to say a big thank you – ARIGATOU - to all the people who have kindly donated their Coles Pokemon Builders.  We have a pretty cool collection on our classroom wall, with a few more yet to construct and put up.  If you have any more lying around at home, please send them our way.

Your encouragement in your child’s second language learning is always much appreciated 😊

The Arts

Performing Arts

This semester in Performing Arts year 4-6 students have been exploring the hilarious world of comedy. They have responded to old classics and new. They have honed their skills of improvisation and developed a scripted comedy scene with their own flare. We've seen Avocados, Aliens and Apes, but mostly lots of creativity and imagination. Stay tuned to see some of these amazing creations in Arts Night 2024!

Technology

Year 3: Exploring Food and Fibre Technologies

Our Year 3 students have been on a journey through time, exploring how technologies in farming and food production have evolved. They investigated both old and new methods of farming and producing food, learning about production in Australia and following foods from the farm to the plate.

As a culmination of their unit, the Year 3 students are eagerly looking forward to making Anzac biscuits. This activity will allow them to apply their knowledge of food production and preparation technologies in a practical and delicious way.

Year 4: Delving into Digital Technologies and Secret Codes

Year 4: Delving into Digital Technologies and Secret Codes

Our Year 4 students have been diving into the world of digital technologies with a focus on secret codes and messages. They have been investigating various methods of encoding and decoding their names, including QR codes, Braille, and Morse code.

Through these activities, students have learnt how to represent data (their names) in different formats and explain how they did it.

Year 5 and 6: Creating with Pixel Art and Binary Code

The Year 5 and 6 students have been exploring the intersection of art and technology through pixel art. They learned to use 3-bit binary digits to create vibrant pixel artworks, discovering how computers use binary code to represent different colours.

Additionally, they have investigated how computers encode images using binary digits. By explaining these processes, students have gained a deeper understanding of the digital world around them, enhancing their technical skills and appreciation for the complexity of computer systems.

STEM

LEGO Spike Prime sumo competition

We were fortunate enough to have the opportunity to participate in the LEGO Spike Prime sumo competition at Beaudesert State Highschool for the entire day. When we arrived, we were led to the Multi hall where we were partnered with a high school S.T.E.M student to help our teams during the event. Mr Kruger (high school S.T.E.M teacher) allowed us to have about 2 hours to complete 5 challenges in order to prepare ourselves for the actual Sumo competition and to figure out our strategies and our robots. After our break the session consisted of 20 rounds of sumo battles against the other schools and each other to find out who would make it into the semi-finals and then the finals to win a new LEGO Spike Prime robot. One of our schools teams, The Captains had started off GREAT and had made it in to the semi-finals which made us all jumpy with excitement as we were hoping to win the New LEGO Spike Prime. Unfortunately, the Captains had lost but we still had the beau spirit and good sportsmanship within us to have an awesome time and congratulate the winning team. Overall, we had a great time experiencing this event and hope to do more in the future 😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁.

Drone Display

On Thursday the 23rd May we were lucky enough to have Mr Thompson from the Yarrabilba Fire Station join us for our STEM class. He brought three different drones that are owned by the fire station. He taught us how to construct the drones and the most expensive one was $30,000! The cheapest one was $700! Before we went outside, he showed us how they were used in the fire station. The small drone was used for tight space missions, but the big drone was for night jobs because it has infrared (heat vision). He took us outside to test them out but didn’t let us fly them and I can see why. There were two controllers one could fly it, but the other one could only look around and see what’s happening. The drone could also see in heat vision and had a light and a speaker attached to it. It was really cool to see how drones could be used to help fight fires and find people and made us think about what else drones would be good for. We really appreciate Mr Thompson's time and would like to thank him for teaching us a valuable lesson and showing us the drones.

Instrumental Music

This week the band and strings students performed two concerts. One for the classes at school and another one for parents, grandparents and friends held at the high school. Both performances went well and it was great to see students performing the repertoire learnt throughout the semester. The performance at the high school allowed students to see the high school band and strings play as well so they can see what they can achieve after a few more years of playing.

Interest notes to play in the Instrumental Program in 2025 will go home in term 3. They will go home to current years 2-5 students. Please have a chat with your child to see if they may be interested in playing an instrument next year when these come home.
