Rozelle Public School Newsletter

TERM TWO WEEK EIGHT

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Rozelle is a place where Aboriginal children learned, played and celebrated their culture for thousands of years on this beautiful, natural land. As we learn, play and celebrate together on this land, we honour the Wangal people of the Eora nation and pay our respects to elders both past, present and emerging.

It has been a busy fortnight for many of our students and staff. In addition to regular teaching and learning programs, our Year Four students attended Narrabeen Sport and Recreation Camp. A wonderful time was had by all and despite lack of sleep, everyone returned with smiles and great stories to tell. Unfortunately, a few students came down with dreaded winter flu and we saw high absenteeism in Year Four classes this week. I would like to thank Nicole Lamsa, Chloe Genion, Angela Svinos, Alden Kwok and Liz Singleton for attending this year’s camp. Without the willingness of staff to attend, our students would not have the opportunity to enjoy these memory making experiences.

For some talented individuals, the past fortnight has been busy. Congratulations for the following:

  • Rosa B (3 Cromer), Oscar E (3 Cromer), Hardy M (3 Cromer), Arthur S (3 Done), Nate A (4 Turrin), Scarlett S (4 Pwerle), Davin C (5 Honjo), Eleanor G (6 Mombassa) and Lily G (6 Mombassa) who competed at the Regional Cross Country Championships.

  • Eloise S (5/6 Cotton), Eloise R (5 /6 Cotton) and Adelaide N (4 Namatjira) who performed on the stage of the Opera House at the Festival of Instrumental Music.

  • Max B (6 Hart) who competed in the PSSA Sydney East touch Championships - his team won!

  • Stage Three Debating Team - debate against Newtown PS. Both affirmative and negative teams won!

EXTERNAL TOILET BLOCK UPGRADE

Today, a demountable toilet block was delivered and installed in the playground. This marks the beginning of the improvements and upgrade of our external toilet block. Funded by the Department of Education, the scope of works includes a new roof, ventilation, fixtures, cubicles, tiling and painting. The planned works are expected to take 8 weeks. An exciting addition to the project will be a mural funded by the P&C and the Community Building Partnership program. Aboriginal artist, Madison Gibbs has been commissioned to design and paint a mural on the facade of the toilet block. This mural installation is scheduled once the toilet upgrade is completed.

SEMESTER ONE REPORTS

Teachers are in the process of finalising Semester One reports. They will be sent home with students on Tuesday 27 June. Should you wish to discuss this progress report, I suggest contacting your child’s teacher at the beginning of Term Three.

PRESCHOOL ENROLMENT 2024 REMINDER
A reminder that applications for enrolment into the preschool program have now opened. All the necessary information and application forms are available on the school website at LINK or from the school office. Children are eligible for enrolment in preschool classes from the beginning of the school year if they turn four years of age before July 31 of that year. Applications close at 3pm on Friday 30 June 2023.

There is no priority for the order in which enrolments are received by the office. The Preschool Placement panel, consisting of the Principal, the President of the P&C and one of our preschool teachers, considers all applications in accordance with the priorities of the Department of Education and Communities' Preschool Enrolment Policy and the Rozelle Public School Preschool Enrolment and Fee Policy.

RECENT NEWS & ACTIVITIES

YEAR 4 CAMP

Last week, Year Four stayed at the Sydney Academy of Sport and Recreation Narrabeen for their annual camp. Students had a wonderful time bonding with their friends and forming new friendships while building their own fires, cooking damper, kayaking and orienteering. It was great to see everyone have fun outdoors and indoors during night games. Thank you to all the students for their positivity and eagerness throughout the camp. A big thank you to the teachers: Ms Lamsa, Ms Singleton, Ms Genion, Ms Svinos and Mr Kwok for organising the experience.

CHICKEN FUNDRAISER STUDENT RECOUNT

On Wednesday, we did our Chicken Fundraiser. We all got to dress up in yellow as a chicken or a giraffe. We raised about $1,465.85 from the chicken fundraiser! THANK YOU to the P&C who also contributed an additional $500!

The activities were soccer, sponge throwing, pin the tail on the egg and many more fun activities. I was running soccer and so were all the boys in my class. As well as having activities we also had stalls such as hair spray, photo booths and a nail salon.

There was an amazing catwalk of costumes. It was a lot of fun and we are very proud of ourselves. Thank you for all your support and money. Congratulations to Charlotte who won the prize of having the new coop named after her for her fabulous chicken outfit. Enjoy your new coop chooks!

JUNIOR LANDSCAPE DESIGN WORKSHOP STUDENT RECOUNT

Last week we were given the job of junior landscape designers. We worked with a team of designers and engineers to make a plan for a new playground. First, we went to the area to see what we could do with the space. After that we found our favourite inspirations. Then we brainstormed what we would change and put in that area. We voted and saw what we could maybe put in there. Next we saw a map of the area that we are designing and we are designing……… wait for it…………drum roll please ………………bang bang bang…………the old OSH playground!.

Big improvements are coming soon.

You can access your portal at anytime, using the portal link https://portal.schoolbytes.education.

You an also access your portal via the Rozelle Public School website - by clicking on the button "Make a Payment" located at the bottom of the home page screen.

If you should have any questions, or have difficulty logging in, please get in touch with the School Office.

PARENT VOLUNTEERS
Helping out at school is a great way to get involved in your child’s education as well as get to know the staff and other parents and carers.

You can help by:

  • listening to children read in the classroom
  • volunteering on sports days
  • helping supervise excursions
  • getting involved in fundraising activities
  • joining school committees.

Parent volunteers are not required to have a Working With Children's Number, however they are required to fill in a 'Declaration for Child-Related Workers' Form, as well as provide 100 points of ID to be photocopied at the school office (including either a passport OR birth certificate, along with drivers license OR Medicare / bank card.

THE SCHOOL CANTEEN
The School Canteen operates as an order-only service five days per week. All orders are made online through Spriggy Schools app and delivered to the school in time for students to enjoy at lunchtime and recess. Orders need to be placed by 7:30am on the day or can be placed weekly in advance. Families will need to download the Spriggy Schools app and create a profile for their child. If you need assistance visit spriggyschools.com.au.

NUDE FOOD TUESDAYS
Nude Food Tuesdays are back! On these days, students are encouraged to bring lunch and recess that are not wrapped in foil, plastic or commercial packaging. Please be mindful of packaging that is put into lunch boxes each day to minimise any rubbish that needs throwing away. Instead, opt for reusable containers for packaging food. Each Tuesday, class nude food lunchboxes will be tallied so please help the Green Team with this great initiative to reduce the waste/rubbish in our school.

NUT AWARE
A number of students at Rozelle have been diagnosed with a life-threatening allergy to nuts. While it is not advised for the school to declare itself “nut-free” we are definitely a “nut-aware” school. This means that we ask parents/carers to carefully consider the food they provide for their child and avoid foods that contain nuts. Before sending in food for special occasions for your child’s class, please check with the teacher. The school appreciates everyone’s effort in keeping all our students safe and supporting their families to manage this difficult situation.

MORNING DROP OFF
Families are reminded that students should not be arriving at school before 8.30am unless they are attending OSH Club or a before school activity such as band rehearsal. There may be occasions where you need to drop your child off 10 minutes earlier. In these instances, students must go to the middle playground, where they sit and wait for teacher supervision to begin.

LOST PROPERTY
When parents are up at the school they may have seen the lost property trolley which is located inside the building entry from the Darling Street playground. Should your child misplace a hat, jumper, water bottle or lunchbox…you may find it in the trolley.

ENROL NOW - KINDERGARTEN 2024

TEACH ETHICS AT RPS!

Ethics is a fantastic NSW schools offer that teaches the students about critical reasoning and how to think through the grey areas.

To teach Ethics you need to spare only 30 mins in your calendar on a Thursday afternoon during term time to teach the class - either 2-2.30pm or 2.30-3pm. The free training can be undertaken by either two face to face sessions or online - choose what suits you! Students signed up to Ethics classes without a teacher unfortunately miss out on this great subject.

You can ask to either teach your child’s class or not. Many Ethics teachers don’t have primary school age children and are either young adults, empty nesters or retirees.

We have two classes at Rozelle PS who need an Ethics teacher - a Year 2 class and a Kindy class. Please spread the word to anybody you think might enjoy teaching Ethics!! Applications and information can be found online on the Primary Ethics website:  https://primaryethics.com.au/

ABOUT BOOK WEEK

Each year across Australia, the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) brings children and books together to celebrate Book Week. During this time schools, libraries, booksellers, authors, illustrators and children celebrate Australian children’s literature.

Every year we receive thousands of fantastic entries and it’s the highlight of the year for our children’s librarians. See for yourself the amazing talent we have here in the Inner West by browsing last year's winning entries.
