Term 2

Principal’s Address

We are officially at the halfway point of the school year. Please enjoy reflecting on the semester that has been. It is lovely to see how many fantastic activities our school community has provided and our students have been involved in. I hope you enjoy the highlights of the term that are showcased in this newsletter.

I would like to acknowledge the dedication and hard work of all Newman SHS staff who have undertaken the task of educating and inspiring students to become productive citizens and lifelong learners.

To our students who receive their reports this week – please take time to reflect on your achievement and make sure you set your goals high moving forward. Take the holiday time to relax and be ready for an exciting second semester.

We will be celebrating NAIDOC week in Week 1 of Term 3. The activities for this week will include a community lunch on Wednesday 17 July and a closing assembly on Friday 19 July - the time and details for these events will be advertised through our communication forums at the start of the term and we welcome all members of our community to attend. In previous years we have had families who have asked to contribute to our lunch - if you would like to do this please contact the school to discuss details.

I would like to acknowledge and thank the Mr Nigel Sanyangore who stepped in to the role of Deputy Principal for Semester One. He will be leaving our school community at the end of this term to pursue the next phase of his professional journey and we wish him all the very best.

Thank you to the Newman community for your ongoing support. I wish everyone a very happy, safe and relaxing holiday and look forward to a fantastic Semester Two.

Kind regards

Scribblers on the Road - Review

Year 7 English Incursion

On June 12th, Newman Senior High School was thrilled to host the 'Scribblers on the Road' staff, authors, illustrators and funding partners for a creative and memorable workshop experience involving our Year 7 students.

The workshop commenced with professional creatives sharing personal anecdotes about their books, illustrations and experiences, followed by time for students to ask questions. The workshop then involved breaking out into English class groups where students were treated with a personalised creative session, each led by one of the professional creatives.

Our students were energised and had wonderful, positive feedback regarding their experience. Newman SHS looks forward to hosting Scribblers on the Road again in coming years!

Clontarf - Attendance Dinner

Each Term Clontarf conduct an Attendance Dinner to acknowledge and reward the best attenders in the three schools as well as the most improved attenders for the term.  Mia Mia does a wonderful job heavily subsidising the meal we provide, and we would not be able to do this event every term without their wonderful support.  This term we had 10 boys selected to attend the dinner on June 18.

The selected boys were:

  • Jacob Lawrence (Year 7)*
  • Shaquan Hodder (Year 7) - improved from 56% in Term 1 to 96% in Term 2.
  • Duane Scomparin (Year 9)*
  • Isaac Yallibah (Year 10)*
  • Vernon Brockman (Year 11) - improved from 49% in Term 1 to 92% in Term 2.

* highest percentage attender

       -      Two boys Ethan and Alistair were 100% for the term – not missing a single day!

These dinners are also a great way to acknowledge the staff who support the boys to get to school each day, so to Will Bellis and Morgan Tucker thanks for another dedicated terms work.

Year 9 Students Dive into Careers Camp in Karratha

Karratha, May 13 - 17, 2024 – Forty enthusiastic Year 9 students, accompanied by four dedicated staff members, embarked on a transformative five-day careers camp in Karratha. This unique camp, funded by the Pilbara Education Partnership, provided students with hands-on experience in various industries, broadening their horizons and igniting potential career interests.

The students participated in a diverse range of career tasters, gaining practical skills and insights into fields such as automotive, construction, logistics, and beauty. In the automotive sessions, students had the chance to work on car engines and change tyres, while in construction, they built toolboxes and learned about different types of machinery and tools. Civil construction gave them the opportunity to learn about the danger of working from heights. This included a thrilling exercise where they were suspended in harnesses, giving them a real sense of the challenges faced in such environments.

Logistics training allowed students to manoeuvre forklifts, an exciting experience that highlighted the intricacies of material handling and warehouse management. The beauty sector offered a creative outlet, where students performed facials attach eyelashes extensions on each other as well as exploring the fundamentals of beauty treatments. The session in the electrical field provided more of a technical challenge, as students connected circuits and learned about the principles of electricity.

A highlight of the camp was attending a careers expo, where students engaged with professionals from various industries. This interaction enabled them to ask questions and gain valuable advice directly from industry experts, offering a clearer picture of potential career paths.

Beyond the career-focused activities, the camp also included a range of recreational activities back at the camp school. Students enjoyed fishing, gathered clues in an Amazing Race-style competition, and took part in a team triathlon. These activities not only provided fun and relaxation but also promoted teamwork and camaraderie among the students.

The careers camp in Karratha was an invaluable opportunity for students to explore different careers and participate in hands-on activities across various industry sectors. This interactive experience has undoubtedly left a lasting impression, equipping students with knowledge and skills that will aid them in their future career decisions.

Students expressed their gratitude for the Pilbara Education Partnership’s support, which made this incredible educational experience possible. As they returned home, they brought back not only new skills and experiences but also a renewed sense of excitement and possibility for their future careers.
