A FEW WORDS FROM THE PRINCIPAL

 Dear families

We trust the term has begun smoothly for you all.

Effective Learners & SA Curriculum

One of our school’s learning targets is to develop Effective Learners who are engaged, confident and resilient in all learning areas. One of the strategies we have identified to activate this target is through high quality task design.

This week our teachers were released from classroom teaching to enable time for team collaboration and professional learning on the South Australian Curriculum, with a particular focus on Mathematics.

The South Australian Curriculum identifies the dispositions, capabilities and knowledge at the heart of each of the 8 learning areas.

In Mathematics we are aiming to develop not only knowledge and essential understandings, but also the dispositions of an effective learner, to have the ability to tackle complex problems in an ever-changing world. The dispositions of Mathematics are being resourceful, resilient and reflective. By fostering the dispositions, we are developing in students, some essential skills for learning and a future and fulfilling life of their choosing.

Teachers use the curriculum to plan student learning, monitor and assess student progress and report to parents across all learning areas. Through high quality task design, teachers develop dispositions so that students have the resourcefulness to choose and use physical and digital tools and strategies; the resilience to embrace struggle and mistakes whilst trying new strategies and reflect on themselves as learners of Mathematics, identifying their strengths and challenges for further learning.

Our aspiration is for all students to see themselves as capable learners of Mathematics to thrive now and into the future.

A Thriving HCEPS Community

Another aspect of our school’s plan is to have a thriving and engaged school community. I have been reminded of the value of our school community recently.

Firstly, I extend a heartfelt thank you to Dennis Iljcesen and parent volunteers for the generous pizza fundraiser held at the end of term 1 to raise funds for our newly formed basketball and netball teams. We are incredibly grateful for the funds raised and the drive of Dennis and the many parent helpers to make it happen. Thank you also to our local businesses who generously donated supplies for the event.

Secondly, I want to say thank you again to our fundraising coordinator, Amy Wadsworth along with parent and staff volunteers who assisted with the Election Day BBQ on Saturday morning. This was another successful event with funds raised also contributing to school sport this year. Thank you for the contributions. Our school thrives with an engaged community alongside us!

Finally, thank you to the parents and family members who attended our SAPOL ‘Think You Know’ online safety session on Thursday evening. Your support is appreciated. If you would like to follow up the online resources, please check out the Think You Know website for further information.

With regards

Matthew Chapman

A FEW WORDS FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL

Dear HCEPS school community,

Hallett Cove East Primary School Celebrates Japanese Cultural Day

Last Tuesday, Hallett Cove East Primary School was alive with the vibrant sounds and sights of Japanese culture during our annual Japanese Cultural Day. The event was a resounding success, bringing together students, staff, and special guests for a day of learning and fun.

The day began with an exhilarating Taiko drumming performance for the whole school. The rhythmic beats resonated throughout the hall, captivating everyone present and setting an energetic tone for the day. We were honoured to have visitors from the LET (Leading Education Team) team join us, adding to the excitement and community spirit.

Our early years students participated in a karate workshop, where they learned basic moves and the importance of discipline and respect in martial arts. The enthusiasm and focus of our young learners were truly inspiring.

For the primary years, a Taiko drumming workshop provided hands-on experience with this traditional Japanese art form. Students enjoyed the opportunity to try their hand at drumming, exploring rhythm and teamwork in a fun and engaging way.

The upper primary students delved into the world of Manga and Anime in a creative workshop. They explored the unique styles and storytelling techniques of these popular Japanese art forms, sparking creativity and imagination.

A highlight of the day was the community picnic, where families gathered to enjoy delicious bento boxes filled with a variety of Japanese treats. We didn't let the showers dampen out spirits. The picnic provided a wonderful opportunity for families to connect and share in the cultural experience.

Adding to the excitement, we had a surprise visit from Pikachu, delighting students and creating memorable moments for everyone involved.

Japanese Cultural Day was a wonderful opportunity for our school community to engage with and appreciate the rich cultural heritage of Japan. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Wallis Sensei and all the organisers, teachers, and visitors who made this day possible. We look forward to more cultural celebrations in the future!

Mother's Day

We would like to extend my deepest gratitude to all the wonderful volunteers who dedicated their time and effort to make our Mother's Day stall a success. Your commitment and enthusiasm are truly appreciated, and your contributions have made a significant impact on our school community.

To all the mothers, we wish you a very Happy Mother's Day! May your day be filled with love, joy, and the appreciation you so richly deserve. Thank you for the endless support and care you provide to your children and our school.

Kind regards,

Robyn Physick

Deputy Principal

Japanese Cultural Day 2025

On Tuesday 29th of April, we had a Japanese Cultural Day to celebrate Japanese Children’s Day in Japan.

Matsuri Taiko came to our school to give us an amazing Performance of Taiko drumming. It was so good and we are grateful they could come to our school and perform some amazing cultural drumming.

The Year 5/6 classes had an amazing anime workshop led by Tsunami Hee Ja. She taught everyone how to draw some impressive anime characters. She showed us great techniques and helped our drawings come to life.

The Year 3/ 4 classes had a superb drumming experience led by Matsuri Taiko. They had fun learning taiko drumming skills. It was a good way for them to learn some of the Japanese culture.

In the big COLA, R-2 classes did a karate workshop with John Alford from Tugra Shan Martial Arts Academy. They were taught how to do punching and kicking, while HCEPS students Leonie, Akhil and Elijah who practice at Tugra Shan Martial Academy, demonstrated for everyone. They had fun learning these skills. They then enjoyed Japanese festival activities Yo-yo tsuri and Kingyo tsuri where they fished for a goldfish and Yo-yo balloon, and played with the traditional Japanese toy Kendama where they had to try and toss the ball in the air and catch it on the wooden stick.

At lunch everyone gathered in the COLA for the whole school Japanese picnic. There were some amazingly designed Japanese obento lunch boxes and the Japanese cultural outfits were awesome. We had a very special guest come and join us, and that was Pikachu.

A FEW WORDS FROM OUR WELLBEING LEADER

Welcome back to Term 2!

We’re looking forward to a fantastic term ahead and are excited to share a number of upcoming events that support our shared goal of enhancing your child’s wellbeing. We’d love to see you there!

Connected Parenting Webinar – Monday 12th May
In partnership with The Resilience Project, we are thrilled to invite you to the Connected Parenting webinar, hosted by Lael Stone. This session will run from 6:30–7:45pm AEST and is open to families from multiple schools. Please see the attached flyer for more information.

Family Regulation Evening with Billie – Wednesday 5th June
In Week 6, we’re excited to welcome Billie, an Occupational Therapist from the Department for Education. Billie has been working closely with our staff to deepen our understanding of regulation, and we’re thrilled to now offer families the chance to learn from her expertise.

Regulation relates to your child's ability to manage their emotions, behaviour, and energy levels in ways that are appropriate to the situation. Developing strong regulation skills supports learning, relationships, and overall wellbeing. There are many things we can do in our daily routines—at school, at home, and everywhere in between—to support our children’s regulation needs.

This event will run from 5:00–6:00pm in the Pavilion. Doors will open at 4:30pm with light snacks provided by our favourite dessert maker, Once Upon a Pie.

We hope you can join us for these valuable opportunities to connect and grow together as a school community.

Kind Regards,

Ellie Burford
