Principal's Report

Tuesday 13th June 2023

Hello Everyone,

To start off I’d like to extend a huge thank you to our crossing supervisor Steve who kindly donated a ukulele to the school. Ukuleles play a big part in our music program and this support and kindness is very much appreciated.

As we head quickly towards the holidays and the end of term it is important to wish Geni Krajewski and her family all the best for their upcoming adventure. Geni will be taking Long Service Leave for the whole of Term 3 to travel around Australia. I’m sure it will be an amazing adventure and opportunity to explore our beautiful country. All the very best! The grade 2/3 classroom will be taught by Cathy Keen, an experienced teacher who has worked in local schools as well as some time teaching here at MMPS. Cathy and Geni have had time to organise a thorough handover and had planning sessions together so that the continuity of education continues for all in the grade 2/3 classroom.

During the last week of Term 2 we have the pleasure of hosting two work experience students from Gisborne Secondary College. Hayley and Olivia are currently in year 10 and will be experiencing the day to day life of the teaching profession. It is great to help young people in our community hone and develop their dreams for life after secondary school. We are all looking forward to having them visit MMPS.

This coming Friday you will receive your child’s Semester One report. They detail how your child is travelling academically in relation to the Victorian Curriculum. They will also include a section that covers their work and participation in our PYP program. These reports really aim to tell the whole ‘story’ about who your child is as a learner and member of MMPS.

Along with the school reports you will have already been given the chance to book in a time for Parent/Teacher Interviews. These are being held on Wednesday the 21st of June and Thursday the 22nd of June. These 10-minute meetings are a great chance to sit down with your child’s teacher and discuss their progress so far this year. There is the option to have a face-to-face meeting (Wednesday) of a WebEx meeting (Thursday) so please let your child’s teacher know your preference and a time slot that suits you via Seesaw as soon as possible.

A final reminder that the last week of Term Two holds two very important events; the Lantern Parade and our visit from Smile Squad. The Lantern Parade is being held on the evening of Tuesday, 20th of June. Students have already started their lanterns in art class and are very excited to take part next Tuesday night. Smile Squad, a free dental check up program is visiting our school next week. If you would like your child to participate and receive a free dental check up you need to provide consent via the QR code which was sent home last week and posted via Audiri.

If you have any questions, concerns or feedback at any stage please do not hesitate to come and see me for a chat.

Lastly, we have had an update from Mrs Hyland, she is having a wonderful time in Europe, visiting countries like Netherlands, Norway and Denmark. So far the weather has been perfect, and they have been visiting historical cities such as Amsterdam, and seeing some truly amazing countryside. She has sent through some stunning photos of her travels, have a look below. We wish her a fabulous time for the remainder of her holiday, and look forward to some more updates and photos!

Have a lovely week,

Joe.

From the Office

Hello everyone,

 A few quick reminders from the office;

  • We have had some much appreciated feedback on the consenting process on Qkr!. This has been updated and no longer requires parents to fill in as much information.
  • Just a reminder that Smile Squad will be attending the school in the week commencing Monday 19th June. Information and links to the consent forms were sent out last week via Audiri, as well as with the students. If you would like your children to participate, please fill in the consent forms as soon as possible.

Just a reminder to jump on to QKR! for the Lantern Parade event. This event is on next week, and we would appreciate if you could please complete as soon as you are able to, thank you.

Have a great week.

Thank you.

Lantern Parade

The Lantern Parade is being held next Tuesday evening 20th June.

Supper will be held at the school hall at 5.30pm

The Parade will start at 6.10pm, leaving from and returning to the hall.

The students have been busily creating their lanterns over the last few weeks and are excited about the event.

For catering purposes, please indicate on QKR! how many additional family members (other than the student) will be having supper.  If you have multiple students at the school, select the number of additional members for one student.  Subsequent students, select the 'N/A' option.

Chess Club is up and running!

Every Tuesday during lunchtime, students can come to Chess Club in the library to play, learn, and have fun. Today we had a fantastic session with kids attending from foundation to grade 6!

A BIG thanks to our volunteer ‘Chess Heads’ Nick and Rohan for coaching these young chess enthusiasts.

Chess is a truly inclusive game which brings people together and promotes teamwork, fair play, resilience and respect. All values we actively foster in our students.

Whether your child is a beginner or an experienced player, they are welcome to join Chess Club. It's a great opportunity to develop skills and friendships. If you wish to support this from home, the app Chess Kid, is a safe space for kids to learn and practice their skills.

Japanese Update

To help put into practice their learning, the Grade 3/4 and 5/6 classes were treated to a Japanese cooking class. The students have learnt how to speak about food this term, and came together today to experience a more cultural aspect of the Japanese language. They were all super excited, and very engaged. After viewing a demonstration by Sharyn Morrice, the Japanese teacher, they assembled their own Nori sheets and rolled their own Sushi. As the Japanese are very focused around the visual appeal of food, student's arranged their sushi on their plates creatively, using their own ways of presenting it. They all called out "Ittadakimasu" Japanese for "Lets eat", and tasted their creations with gusto. What a wonderful way to finish up the term. May thanks to all our parent helpers for the day, without whom we would not have been able to attempt such a momentus task. Thank you to Sheryn, Lauren, Amanda, Tracey, Dan, Sarah, Narelle and Gordana for kindly volunteering their time to assist. Have a look at some great photos below.

Take part in a survey to help shape the future of education in Australia

Parents and guardians are invited to take part in a survey to help inform the Review to Inform a Better and Fairer Education System.

The online survey is an opportunity to help shape the future of education in Australia. It closes on Friday 23 June 2023.

The survey is open to anyone who cares for a school-aged child and makes decisions about their education. Students aged under 18 years can also take part, but require consent from a parent or guardian to do so.

The expert panel for the review will use the results to inform recommendations for the final report to all education ministers, by 31 October 2023. The final report will advise education ministers on what targets and reforms should be included in the next National School Reform Agreement.

The Social Research Centre is conducting the survey. The surveys close on Friday 23 June 2023

For more information on the survey, refer to parents/guardians survey on the Australian Government Department of Education website.
