Drummoyne Public School

Term 1 Week 11 Newsletter - Friday 12 April 2024

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Dear Drummoyne PS Community,

Looking back…

Welcome to the end of Term 1. On top of the usual beginning-of-school-year changes and organisational challenges schools face in Term 1, this year, there was a new Principal thrown into the mix and the potential was there for a stressful start to 2024.

As I reflect upon the successes and challenges that this term has brought, I am happy to say that the energy, resilience, flexibility and positivity of all of the staff has been amazing and has led to what, I hope you also feel, has been a successful start to the year for our students with all the usual accompanying bells and whistles such as swimming carnivals, in/excursions, information nights, parent-teacher interviews, sport & music programs, assemblies & special events and, just this week, the Principal’s afternoon tea for all of our Term 1 Principal’s Badge recipients.

On a personal note, the warm welcome I received from parents, students and staff upon my joining the Drummoyne PS community was very much appreciated and I have also been grateful for the positive and constructive feedback that I have received since.

Looking forward…

We have some exciting events and activities planned for next term with many opportunities for parents to join in. The first of these will be our ANZAC Day ceremony on the first day back at school, Tuesday 30th April at 2:35pm. You are invited to join us and students are encouraged to bring in a floral tribute to lay as part of the ceremony. Please also keep an eye out for information regarding the school cross country and athletics carnivals, the launch of our Peer Support program & new PBL rewards system, Mothers Day celebrations, Stage 3 camps to Bathurst & Canberra and Semester 1 reports. Term 2 is shaping up to be a busy one.

I hope you all enjoy a safe and restful holiday break and I look forward to welcoming our students back to school on Tuesday, 30th April.

Regards,

John Nguyen

Road Safety

Given the location of our school at the intersection of busy streets, please take road safety seriously every day.

The Safety Town website is a suite of digital and non-digital teaching and learning activities to support the teaching of road safety from Kindergarten to Year 6 in NSW primary schools.

The website includes interactive activities, comprehensive teaching notes, links to relevant transport information, and updated information for parents and carers.

Safety Town helps parents to reinforce road safety messages and concepts that are taught at school. Please see the link below.

PBL AWARDS

Principal's Awards and Principal's Badges

Students receive values certificates from their teachers throughout the year for demonstrating our values of Respect, Responsibility and Resilience.

Once a student receives 5 values certificates, they are able to trade them in at the school office for a Principal's Award.  The 5 values certificates can be a combination of the 3 school values and come from any year the student has been in.

Once the student has received 3 Principal's Awards, they can bring those 3 awards to the school office and choose their Principal's Badge from one of the 3 values.

Stage 3 have been training this week on becoming Peer Support Leaders next term. In pairs, the year 6 students will lead activities every Wednesday on the topic 'Keeping Friends.'  Year 5 students are ready to step up and support Year 6 students if need be.

EVERYTHING SPORTY

2024 NSW PSSA Swimming Championships at Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre

Many swimmers, many pools, many rounds, many caps.

Round 1 of the swimming competition started back in March at the DPS Swimming Carnival, Drummoyne Swimming Centre. I wore a white cap.

Having qualified for a few events I represented our school at Round 2 Zone Carnival, Ashfield Aquatic Centre. Again I wore a white & blue cap (Drummoyne PS). I was lucky enough to be named 12-year-old Age Champion too!

At Round 3 I represented Sydney East Region at Sydney Olympic Aquatic Centre (SOPAC). This time I wore a red cap with black.

Yesterday was Round 4, the final round of competition at SOPAC. This time I wore a white cap with red and blue writing (SE Sydney). And my racing swimmers.

SOPAC was busy and buzzing. Families, friends and swimming foes had travelled from all over NSW just to be there. Event 17, Heat 3, Lane 7 was my race. In my heat I was competing against people from Middleton, Yamba, Kellyville, Edgeworth Heights and Normanhurst. They’d traveled much further than the distance of my 50M Freestyle race which was over in about 30 seconds!

Over 2 days, 1482 swimmers will have attended the event, representing a wide range of NSW. Collectively there are 1658 entries into different distances (50M, 100M, 200IM) and strokes (Freestyle, Butterfly, Backstroke and Breastroke). And, 229 relay teams!

Stage 3 Softball Gala Day - student report

On the 8th of April, it was an exciting day for Stage 3. All of year 5 and 6 walked down to Taplin Park at 9.30am to play softball. Each house got split into 2 groups for the day and played until lunchtime. There were a few incidents during the games. What do you expect? Overall the day was fun for everyone!

Everyone wore their colourful house shirts to support their team. Mrs Mooney organised the event with the help of the house captains. We walked back to school at around 12 o’clock and enjoyed the rest of the day together. I think that this was a fun experience.

    Dear Parents & Carers,

Thank you to all the parent volunteers and student helpers throughout term 1. Thank you to Esme, Tamara, Oznur and Megan for their help today. A special thank you to one of the school’s Nanas, Esme. She is here from overseas staying with family. On Thursday she shared her secret  Butter Chicken Recipe. I was lucky enough to watch her cook it from scratch. It smelt wonderful and tasted amazing. There was a limited amount for sale on Flexischools. I am looking forward to the feedback and hoping this may be an exciting new addition to our menu next term.

If you don’t want to miss out on news updates from the canteen on your phone, you will need to log in to your Flexischool account.

    Term 2 price increases

Following a review of supplier costs and canteen pricing, the P&C have agreed to a marginal price increase for some of our canteen menu items. The price increases will be effective from the start of Term 2 and the updated pricing will be reflected on Flexischools. In most cases, the increases are between 20-50 cents. The P&C continues to ensure that the canteen items are affordable and are filled great value and healthy options!

We wish everyone a safe and happy holiday!!! See you in Term 2,

    Kind regards,
