PRINCIPAL’S THOUGHTS

Messages from Mr Dill

Visit by MP

On Wednesday morning we hosted a visit by Stephanie Di Pasqua MP,  newly elected State Member for Drummoyne.  Stephanie asked to visit the school to listen to matters of interest to our school community and is photographed here with Sonia, one of our school prefects.

Happy Friday!

Thank you to everyone across the school community for playing a part in big and smaller ways to bring together the upcoming 2023 Spring Fete.  Related to this, the response to the Friday mufti days in recent weeks to promote the fete has been wonderful with parents, grandparents and friends generously supporting the school, and students loving the opportunity to enjoy wearing casual dress.

In assemblies, I speak of the 3 reasons why children come to school i.e., to learn, to make friends and to have fun! The Spring Fete is a special opportunity in the school calendar to have fun especially as a family and I encourage you to support the fete in any way you can.

Congratulations Stage 3 Choir

It was wonderful to see the Stage 3 Choir perform at the Sydney Opera House on Tuesday night as part of the Festival of Choral Music – Australis concert. It was a 'sold out' performance with some 30 schools across the state represented. We were thoroughly entertained with a variety of choral items, orchestral pieces and live bands.  Thank you teachers for your commitment to showcase the choir namely: Kathy Xenos, Beck Cantlay and Leigh Russ and to our parents for your faithful support of the choir and attendance at the concert. Please see the photographs in the  Announcements section.

Anita Chin Maths Workshop

Thank you to every parent who attended the Mathematics workshop on Wednesday afternoon presented by Mathematics consultant Anita Chin (see photographs).  The workshop explained what maths looks like in classrooms given the new curriculum and how students need to demonstrate their learning.  Further insights on helping students with mathematics is available at Anita's website found at:
https://anitachinmaths.com.au/

Ticket Release

Tickets for the performing arts productions this term will go on sale on Monday at 10.00am (see Announcements).  All students will participate in the show for their stage including K-2 'Night at the Movies',  Years 3 & 4 'Emotional Kaleidoscope', and Years 5 & 6 'Australiana Landscapes'.  To enable every family to view their child's performance, tickets are limited to 2 tickets per student.  Further tickets will be made available if any are unsold.  For students in K-2, please consider attending the Matinee performance.

Good luck to our Tournament of the Minds team who will present at the Sydney North Regional Finals on Sunday 27th August.

FROM THE DEPUTY'S DESK

Class of the week - Stage 2

Students in years 3/4 have been learning about early explorers and the early years of European settlement in Australia from both a British and Eora perspective.

After researching an explorer of their choice, they enjoyed sketching and painting tall ships using watercolours, as we discussed what life must have been like for the travellers of this time.

School Reporting Parent Survey

Dear Parents and caregivers,

Today you will receive an online survey via Schoolbytes to ask for feedback on our school reporting processes. We ask that you complete it by Friday 1st September. It should take no more than 10 minutes.

Thank you

Deputy Principal

COVID SAFETY UPDATES

RAT kits are available from the school office

RAT kits are available from the school office for all families.

For continued testing, please call or visit the office to arrange collection.

COVID-smart measures in schools

Our layered COVID-smart measures – staying home if unwell, hygiene and cleaning practices, testing for COVID-19, masks strongly encouraged and ventilation – will continue this term. More details on our Advice for families page.

NSW Health advise that during the winter months, COVID will continue to present a health risk to the community. Accordingly, schools will implement baseline COVID-smart measures to help reduce the risk of transmission for students and staff members. These key COVID-smart measures include:

  • staying home and getting tested if unwell, and only attending school when symptom free.

  • rapid antigen testing for symptomatic students and staff. Please contact us for test kits.

Staying home when sick

With flu cases on the rise, we would like to remind families that simple hygiene such as regularly washing hands will help stop the spread of the potentially deadly virus.

Students are asked to stay home when sick. They should only attend school when they are symptom free.

Parents and carers who have children with persistent or ongoing symptoms of flu or COVID 19 are encouraged to have these assessed by their local health care professional. These symptoms may be related to other illnesses (e.g. allergies or hay fever) that require treatment and management by a doctor.

HELPING YOUR CHILD WITH THE NEW CURRICULUM

Anita Chin professional learning session

As you know, Anita Chin came to Drummoyne Public School for a parent workshop for mathematics on Wednesday.

Following this, she led a professional development workshop for DPS staff on place value and how to best use some of the concrete materials on the trolleys every class teacher has in their classroom for this area of mathematics. We focused on the use of dominoes and ten frames. Below you can see an example of what this trolley looks like, with slight differences between K-2 and 3-6.

One of the key ideas teachers took away was linked to our learning on delivering number talks, which was posing to children ‘prove it 3 ways’. This helps with student communication as they justify, explain and reason how a problem can be solved 3 different ways. Below is the example we worked through as a staff and you’ll notice we took it to proving it 4 ways!

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Festival of Choral Music Australis Concert

On Tuesday, 15th August 2022, the Stage 3 choir attended the Festival of Choral Music Australis Concert. They had been preparing all year for the event, rehearsing a 10-song repertoire each week, practising harmonies, timing and singing together as a group. Students arrived at the Sydney Opera House in the morning for one final rehearsal and prepared for the concert during the day, singing with prestigious bands and orchestras, and ensuring that they sounded their best by watching their conductor, Rachel Kelly. Many students enjoyed a lovely dinner in the city before returning for the concert at night.

The concert went splendidly; the singing of the combined students from almost 30 schools sounded absolutely magical as everyone sang perfectly in time with all the nuances they had been practising. It was fantastic to have such a huge audience in the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall to appreciate all the hard work that had been put in to prepare for the concert. Students were lucky enough to also watch a number of bands, orchestras, and choirs perform some beautiful music, as well as singing their own songs. The choir particularly loved singing their favourite song, The Captain's Tale, and the showstopping final number, Naughty.

It was a spectacular evening the students will not soon forget. With any luck, the Stage 3 Choir will be invited to perform again next year.

Year 6 leadership and cake stall

Year 6 has been flexing their leadership muscle of late with various endeavours around the school.
Many students exercised resilience while assisting teachers with lunch time yoyo distribution after the recent NED show; others are demonstrating responsibility by taking charge of the sandpit cover each day; while more are modelling respect as they coordinate a Colouring-in Club on the Infants' playground during lunch times. Setting targets for their end of year fundraising activities, year 6 finished this week providing a cake stall for the school.
We are proud of our senior student body and thank them for their continued efforts to help create a positive student environment at DPS.

NSW Premier's Spelling Bee Regional Final

Friday of week 4 saw Triet Nguyen and Isabelle Mills represent Drummoyne Public School in their respective stage group of the NSW Premier's Spelling Bee Regional Finals.

Some 26 schools were represented in each of the finals, with only the first placed student moving on to the Grand Final of the NSW Premier's Spelling Bee, to be held at the ABC studios.

With their friends in the STEAM Room watching on, the spelling bees were successfully run via Zoom. Under immense pressure, both students were awesome. Isabelle placed 6th in the Stage 2 competition, while Triet placed second for the second year running.

Congratulations to both spellers. Best wishes to Triet at Trinity, and I'm confident we'll be seeing more of Isabelle in future NSW Premier's Spelling Bee Finals.

GENERAL NEWS

Tap on and tap off, every time you travel by bus

Our school is partnering with the local school bus operator, Busways, to support a new Tap On and Tap Off education campaign encouraging students who travel by bus to correctly use their school Opal cards. Busways is implementing this campaign throughout Term 3, 2023. This campaign will focus on a simple message – tap on and tap off every time you travel by bus.

Why is tapping on and off on the bus important?

The use of Opal cards is the primary way bus operators and Transport for NSW analyse demand for bus services. When students don’t use their Opal cards, their trip is not recorded. Therefore, buses may appear underutilised. Tapping on and off provides better data to plan better bus services. How can you help? If your child travels to school by bus, please ensure your child has a valid Opal card (either a School or Child/Youth Opal card).

Visit Transport for NSW website to apply for a school Opal card. Students may see onboard bus posters and Busways Community Relation Officers at afternoon loadings. Together let’s get students into good habits of tapping on and tapping off with their Opal card.

Thank you for your support with this campaign.
