Term 4, Week 3 2023

From the Principal

World Teacher's Day is this Friday 27 October. This is your chance to join

Australia in celebrating teachers.

HATS OFF TO TEACHERS THIS WORLD TEACHERS’ DAY!

This week we celebrate World Teacher's Day.

Let’s celebrate Australia’s teachers for their skilled work in educating, inspiring and supporting our students.

Share your “hats off” selfie to celebrate teachers, and to tell us what they mean to you.

Grab your hat – beret, beanie, bucket, bowler – and create a post on social media, using #WorldTeachersDay2023 and @aitsl

And a very special thank you to our wonderful teachers; Mrs Ranie, Mrs Walsh, Miss Gerathy, Mrs Arabin, Mrs Witt, Mrs Cassidy, and our regular casual Mr Godman, for their unwavering commitment and dedication to our students and all of their educational and wellbeing needs. Please make sure that you thank your teacher for all that they do. There are some fun ways to thank or recognise your teacher here: https://worldteachersday.edu.au/resources

Boorowa Touch Football/Netball Carnival

A great day was had last Friday at the Boorowa Carnival. Students from years 2 to 6 played in either a touch football or netball team on the day, and both teams had a few great wins in amongst a couple of losses. All students showed great sportsmanship, encouragement and tenacity on the day! Well done team Binalong and thank you to Alerya Brayshaw and Allira from Trinity for helping out with refereeing on the day.

Murrumburrah HS Transition

Michael and Lochie had a great day at high school today, they participated in peer support activities, woodwork, PE and agricultural classes.

Small Schools Chess Tournament

Congratulations to Tyson and Carter who were selected to participate in the inaugural chess tournament to be held at Breadalbane PS in November. Good luck to you both! Below is a link to chess rules for anyone else who might be interested in playing in their own time.

2022 School Year Book

We have had some requests to order last year's 2022 School Year Book. If you would like to make a purchase, please reply to this message so we can place the orders together. Books cost $60.00 each.

Check In Assessments

The Check-in assessment is a NSW Department of Education online literacy and numeracy assessment available to support schools to assess and monitor student learning.

The assessment can supplement existing school practices to identify how students are performing in literacy and numeracy and to help teachers tailor their teaching more specifically to student needs. Students with disability may receive the same level of support during the assessment they would normally receive in the classroom.

· Students in Years 3, 4 and 5 complete their assessments this week (Tuesday). Year 6 completed theirs last term.

· All students complete a reading assessment and a numeracy assessment.  Year 6 students  also complete a writing assessment.

From the SRC

We are excited to let you know that we are taking part in National Bandanna Day this year. Held on the last Friday in October, Bandanna Day is the flagship fundraising and awareness campaign for Canteen.

Canteen provides free and tailored support to young people aged 12-25 who are impacted by cancer. Whether they are dealing with their own diagnosis, a close family member’s cancer or the death of a loved one, Canteen provides support such as counselling, peer support events and youth friendly resources.

Young people impacted by cancer are up to six times more likely to face mental health issues like anxiety or depression than their peers. After just six months of support from Canteen, almost two-thirds of young people report improvements in their mental health and overall wellbeing. Canteen also provides services for parents dealing with cancer in their family, because research shows that when parents are supported through cancer and communicate openly, their children are likely to experience less distress and anxiety.

This Bandanna Day, we are supporting young people impacted by cancer by selling bandannas and fundraising for Canteen.

To find our fundraising page and support our effort, please scan the QR code in the photo and search for Binalong Public School. You can then purchase a bandanna online to collect from our fundraising box, or make a kind donation to ensure no young person and their family face cancer alone. Alternatively, bring along your $5 on Friday to purchase on the day.

Broody Hens

On Friday 13 October Binalong students gave our broody hen some fertile eggs in the hope that we will be able to hatch some chicks for the Binalong Spring Fair.

Students can follow along with the embryo development on a chart provided in the chicken coop. We ask that any visitors to our school closely supervise their children when visiting the chickens.

Around the school

Over the last couple of weeks we've had some special visitors including: a visit from the relieving Director, Liz Beasley.  The students demonstrated their "bucket drumming" skills; and last Monday a pair of king parrots dropped in for hand feeding by Mrs Edwards, much to the delight of all our students. We also had Mr Godman giving students a 'sweaty brain' when working on their mathematical skills working out how to represent one million.

P&C Updates

Thank you to the P&C team and members who volunteered at the Murrumbateman Field Days last weekend. Together we raised over $4000 (total figure to be tallied soon) to go back into supporting our students and our school. Thank you to the following people for volunteering your time either over the weekend or in the set up and pack down: Max & Zoe Giles, Ali Spencer, Renee & Matty Arabin, Madaline Brayshaw, Courtney Goltz, Nathan and Mel Edwards, Kerry Foran, Tracy Ranie, Liesh Cotter, Fabia A, Kirsten Pack and Tamika Paterson.

We also have Spring Fair fast approaching which is one of our kids most favourite events of the year, and we would really appreciate sharing the volunteering load so that we can continue to run this event. If you can help out in the setting up, on the day, or the pack up, please text Ali Spencer on 0401544793.

Thank you for your support.

P&C Spring Fair Raffles

The P&C have been busy organising the upcoming Spring Fair and have sourced some incredible prizes for the raffle. They are requesting that all families help support their efforts by taking a raffle booklet of 20 tickets home to sell on their behalf. These will go home today with students (so please check your child's bag) and all monies and sold stubbs/unsold tickets need to be returned to school by Friday 27 October 2023

Student Attendance

Parents of children from Kindergarten to Year 12 must ensure their children attend school every day. On occasion, your child may need to be absent from school. Justified reasons for student absences may include:

  • being sick or having an infectious disease
  • having an unavoidable medical appointment
  • being required to attend a recognised religious holiday
  • exceptional or urgent family circumstances e.g. attending a funeral.

Parents must provide an explanation for absences to the school within 7 days from the first day of any period of absence. Where an explanation has not been received within the 7-day timeframe, the school will record the absence as unexplained on the student's record.

If your child has a late arrival or early departure from school, please come into the foyer of the Office and sign your child in/out.  The reason for absence should be detailed enough for staff to identify if the reason is acceptable.  If the reason noted is "appointment" the absence will be marked as unjustified as it is not a clear enough reason. Please be accurate with your description.

“I know that a day off here and there doesn’t seem like much but these absences can add up quickly and days lost can equal years lost.”

“The more your child attends school the greater opportunity he / she will have to reach his / her potential."
