Term 2 rolls on, and it’s been another exciting and jam-packed one at CPS with the usual fare continuing!
Students are in the fine-tuning stages of their Edudance routines, with dress rehearsals imminent! Our first concert will be held next Friday from 2.15pm sharp, so try your best to find the time to come down and support. Not only is it a highly entertaining community event to enjoy, but your children absolutely thrive on the atmosphere that you bring by being in the audience. We can’t wait! A final concert will be held at the same time on Tuesday, July 1.
Please note that due to the Edudance concert (and final practice sessions) next Friday, our regular Friday assembly has been moved to Week 9.
Mr Howesmith and the Music Leaders are also in final preparations for the CHUMT (Churchlands Music and Talent) Show finals which are just around the corner. It is always a profound moment watching our young performers demonstrate such courage and talent in front of a large live audience. Congratulations to all students who have ‘put their hat in the ring’ through the auditions, and we wish our students who will be participating in the finals good luck!
This term, we proudly completed the submission of our inaugural Churchlands Primary School Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP). This milestone represents the culmination of an enormous amount of collaborative effort over the past two years and signals the beginning of our formal reconciliation journey. A heartfelt thank you to our dedicated ‘CPS RAP’ team, led by Hannah Reid, Emma Jenkin, and Jasmine Neuwen, who have worked tirelessly alongside community Elders and Noongar representatives to build a meaningful foundation for our students, staff, and wider community. Highlights from our RAP launch have included engaging Waterwise sessions, the celebration of our striking new school mural, Moorditj Maali (Strong Swan) by artist Jarni McGuire, our Bridge of Hearts reflective art project, and the moving performance by the Yirra Yakkin theatre company. Our journey will continue throughout the term, with Noongar Language workshops bringing further richness to our learning. Thank you to all involved and be sure to read the full report by Mrs Jenkin further in this newsletter.
Thank you also to all the parents who took part in our community communication survey. As we continue our transition to the Compass school management platform, your feedback has been invaluable in helping us understand what’s working and where we can improve. Our rollout so far—particularly in student attendance tracking-has gone smoothly, and we’re excited to expand its use next term. In term 3, we will begin using Compass for whole school notifications and excursion/incursion permissions, helping us find that all-important balance between keeping families informed without overloading them.
If you haven’t had the chance to complete the survey, it remains open and can be accessed here - CPS Communication Survey.
I would also like to take the opportunity to remind the community of the departments Connect and Respect policies and their importance for our Churchlands community. This guideline aims to support schools and their communities through complex modern communication and is highly relevant and important to understand. Please take the time read over our expectations and keep them in mind as we continue support and build on such a great strength of ours – our inclusive and diverse community environment.
And finally, we have had some sad/happy news this week. The CPS institution that is Mrs Samsa has decided that it is the right time to hang up her boots! Mrs Samsa, who has been at CPS since 2006, will be retiring at the end of the term to enjoy the fruits of retirement and more quality time with her family. Mrs Samsa has worked tirelessly over nearly a half a decade in total so it’s a little bit hard to put into a short amount of words the impact she has had at Churchlands. If you manage to catch Mrs Samsa in and around the school over the next couple of weeks, please pass on your congratulations and thanks for her unbelievable service as we look forward to sending her off in style at the end of the term.
Warm regards, Luke Johnson Acting Principal
