Welcome back to Term 2. The autumn weather has truly put on a beautiful display, with our school grounds awash in seasonal colour.

I have already had the pleasure of meeting with our P&C, whose dedication and enthusiasm continue to enrich the experiences we offer our students and their families. There are some wonderful events coming up, including the Mother’s Day Stall and Mother’s Day Breakfast. The P&C will also be hosting a lunch at the Athletics Carnival-and I’m told there may even be a coffee van on site, which is certainly welcome news.

It has been a busy and rewarding start to the term. Students have participated in Cross Country, engaged in Wiradjuri culture and language activities, and we congratulate Harrison on representing the school at State Swimming. A wide range of extracurricular clubs are already underway during lunchtime, alongside PSSA training for soccer (football) and netball, with basketball to be added soon.

Enrolments are now open for Kindergarten 2027. We encourage you to spread the word-families can enrol online via our school website https://zigzag-p.schools.nsw.gov.au/ or contact our main office on 6351 2352 for more information. Transition activities will begin in Term 3, and we are very much looking forward to welcoming our new cohort of learners.

HPGE (High Potential Gifted Education) is a focus for our Public Schools. In addition to differentiated practice within classrooms, a number of our students are involved in a targeted Waste to Art project with Mrs Dudley and Game Changer activities with Mrs Woods. We are also developing students talents in the area of leadership with our SRC and Student Leaders stepping up to engage in activities that really develop their social emotional leadership skills in the form of giving back to the community- watch this space!

Lastly we have an exciting initiative to harness the voice of our parents and carers. We rely on your feedback to ensure that we are serving our community in the best way possible. Parents, guardians and caregivers are invited to take 10 to 15 minutes to participate in the NSW Public Schools Parent Survey. As this is an anonymous survey, we can’t tell who has responded, however, to ensure we capture each and every parent voice, every family in the school will go into the draw for a $100 meat voucher once we reach 90% respondants. During Week 3 and 4, staff will have an iPad at the front gate and invite you to fill in the form here if you have limited access to digital devices. You can access the survey via the QR code here as well and further information will be sent home.

A wonderful group of Zig Zag students and staff proudly took part in the Lithgow ANZAC Day March and Service.

We were especially proud to see our school leaders participate in the wreath-laying ceremony, and to watch Kaylee ride her horse as part of the March.

A big thank you to all students who attended — your outstanding turnout and the respectful, dignified manner in which you represented our school at such a meaningful community event made us incredibly proud.

In our 5/6 classroom, students have been engaging deeply in literacy through the text Our World: Bardi Jaawi Life at Ardiyooloon.

They have been developing important skills in summarising and note-taking, learning how to identify key ideas and record information effectively.

Through this work, students are also building their understanding and appreciation of the culture and daily life of the remote community of One Arm Point, fostering respect and awareness of Australia’s diverse Indigenous perspectives.

Our Year 4/5 students have been exploring the new Dance curriculum, focusing on the key elements of dance such as movement, space and timing.

Working collaboratively in small groups, students have been creating and composing their own dance routines.

They have enjoyed the opportunity to share their performances with others, building confidence, creativity and teamwork skills along the way.

3/4 are working on our daily review in Mathematics.

We are working on tructures and systems to improve our knowledge of 8 times tables.

In 1/2 class we are all back together and ready for a great term of learning! In Shared Reading, students begin by revising mnemonics to support tricky words, then practised their decoding skills.

The session concludes with a whole-class reading of a decodable text linked to our current spelling focus.

It has been fantastic to see students building confidence and applying their skills in a supportive group setting.

K/1 have been busy learning a new sound /c/ in phonics lessons and have made a /c/ Cookie Monster craft to use when writing words.

In maths, we have been learning about growing and shrinking patterns, making different combinations to 4 and 5, and practising writing our numbers.

Additionally, the class has been working writing their first names during morning activities. 

Premier’s Reading Challenge Update

We’re off to a great start with the NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge at Zig Zag Public School!

Our Kindergarten to Year 2 students have been busy reading in the library, with Mrs Hookham logging their books as they go 📖✨

In the older years, it’s fantastic to see students taking ownership of their reading:

• 6 students in Year 4 have begun logging their reading
• 13 students in Year 5 are actively participating
• 2 students in Year 6 have started the challenge

If your child is in Years 3–6, they can log their reading online through the student portal, or use a paper reading log (available in the library).🎬 Don’t forget to check out our student-made PRC video on Facebook for a quick and fun explanation of the challenge!

MacqLit students have been enthusiastically engaging in their learning through games and the creation of sound walls, building their spelling and reading skills in an enjoyable and meaningful way.

Welcome to the new committee for 2026 and thank you to the people volunteering to help with these positions so we could have a P&C this year.

Coming up this term we have a Mother’s Day stall on 7th May where children will be able to purchase $5 gifts for the special women in their lives. 

On the 8th May we will be holding Mother’s Day breakfast 8-9am to celebrate with all the amazing mothers, carers and ladies that we know and love. Notes have been sent home about this, don’t forget to get your orders in or contact the office if you need more information. 

At our athletics carnival the P&C will be running a canteen as well to fill little belly’s with delicious food to keep everyone warm and full of energy. 

For the first time we will also have Rustic Brews coffee van to warm and fuel parents as well, we cannot wait for them to come join us for the day! 

If anyone is available to volunteer for any of these events please contact anyone on the P&C or the office. 

We are trying to get a canteen up and running again for the kids, if anyone is interested in volunteering for canteen please let our wonderful office ladies know. At this stage it could be weekly, fortnightly or even monthly. 

Canteen also needs someone with the food certificate so if anyone is interested in that please let us know.
