Restorative Schools

At Caves Beach Public School, our commitment to building strong connections is at the heart of every classroom. During recent learning walks with our Real Schools facilitator, Marion, teachers focused on restorative language and relational presence—using positive priming, affective statements, and calm, respectful guidance. These approaches help create a welcoming environment where students feel valued, supported, and ready to learn. We’re proud to see our staff modelling the power of connection every day.

NSW Public Schools Student & Parent Survey

Students in Years 3 to 6 are currently participating in the NSW Student Survey, which gives them a chance to share their views on school life, wellbeing, and learning. The information collected from these surveys helps us understand students’ needs and make improvements to enhance their school experiences. We would also like to remind parents and caregivers that the Parent Survey is still open and will close at the end of this term. Your feedback is very important and helps us plan and improve school programs and services. Both student and parent survey responses are confidential and used to make our school a better place for everyone. If you haven’t already completed the Parent Survey, we encourage you to take a few minutes to share your views.

CBPS P&C

Last week, we held our P&C Annual General Meeting, and I want to sincerely thank our 2025 office bearers for their dedication and commitment to our school community. Their hard work has greatly enriched our students' experiences. I am pleased to announce our office bearers: Stephanie Davies as President, Mandy Tyndall as Vice President, Glenn Campbell as Treasurer, with the Secretary position currently vacant. We encourage community members to consider stepping into the vacant Secretary role, as this position is essential to the ongoing success of our P&C and the support they provide to our school.

Kind regards,

Lisa Dallaway

Assistant Principal, Curriculum and Instruction

Class of the Week

4/5B

4/5B have been hard at work creating stunning Swansea Bridge artworks inspired by the creative experiences shared during the Swansea High School Domain Discovery Day! Thank you to Swansea High School for the design idea.

Students explored colour, perspective and texture to bring this local landmark to life, showcasing their artistic talents and teamwork along the way. We are so proud of the creativity, effort and enthusiasm they demonstrated throughout the project. Well done, 4/5B!

5T

5T have been exploring the incredible story of Macquarie Island through the text One Small Island during their literacy lessons. Students have engaged in rich discussions about the important conservation work taking place to protect this unique natural wonder and its beautiful flora and fauna.

Inspired by the island’s famous penguins, 5T spent this week creating their own clay penguin sculptures. It was wonderful to watch the creativity and care that went into each piece, with every penguin developing its own special features and personality. The students are very excited to add paint and bring their creations to life once the clay has fully set over the coming weeks.

Debating

Congratulations to our two debate teams for kicking off Round 1 of the NSW Premiers Debating Competition against Marks Point with real gusto! Our 'Caves Beach Sharks' came away with a convincing win, while our 'Caves Beach Stingers' had a very close debate, but unfortunately came away with a loss.

Great work debaters!

Star Struck 2026

Our Star Struck dancers have been busy attending rehearsals alongside schools from across the region as they prepare for Star Struck 2026, Out of the Ordinary!

Yesterday was an exciting milestone as students received their official Star Struck shirts, with excitement levels definitely high! The energy, enthusiasm and commitment our dancers have shown throughout rehearsals has been wonderful to see.

We can’t wait to watch our students shine on stage and be part of such an incredible performance experience.

A special thank you to Mrs Tonks and Miss Brewster for making opportunities and experiences like this available to our students.

Parent Survey

In Term 2, we are inviting parents and carers to participate in the NSW Public Schools Parent Survey. The survey gives you the opportunity to share your experience at our school, including communication, inclusion, wellbeing and how your child’s learning is supported.

Hearing directly from our parents and carers will help us understand what’s working well and where improvements can be made. Participation in the survey is optional, your responses are anonymous, and it takes around 10 to 15 minutes to complete. You can access at the survey at https://surveyme.education.nsw.gov.au/sc/fHqIWVCsg4suBij6-C8JxA2

Further information about the NPSS Parent Survey is available at https://education.nsw.gov.au/npss.

Learning and Support

The Importance of Home Reading

Home reading has a strong, well-established impact on children’s reading development. Research consistently shows that children who experience regular reading interactions at home tend to achieve higher reading outcomes, compared to those who do not.

Home reading is most effective when it feels like shared reading time, not a test. The goal is to build confidence, fluency and understanding - not to assess every word.

Tips for home reading

  • If your child gets stuck, give them time to try different strategies. Then support with gentle prompts such as,
    • “Can you sound it out?”
    • “Let’s blend it together.”
    • “Can we break it into smaller chunks?”
    • “Can you see parts of the word you already know?”  Avoid jumping straight to telling them the word unless needed.
  • Rereading familiar books is an important part of home reading. Rereading builds fluency as children are no longer decoding everything from scratch. It helps them read more smoothly with expression and builds confidence.

  • 10–15 minutes of focused reading is more effective than long, tiring sessions. Consistency builds automaticity!

PSSA Girls Soccer

Our PSSA Girls Soccer team competed in the first three rounds of the NSW Knockout Competition. The girls showed fantastic teamwork throughout the day, winning their Round 1 and Round 2 matches to progress through to Round 3.

Although their journey ended in the third round, the team represented our school with pride and should be incredibly proud of their efforts and achievements.

Mr. Bone was incredibly proud of every player for their commitment, resilience and positive attitude throughout the day.

We would also like to wish Valentine PS the very best of luck in the next round of the competition!

PSSA Boys Soccer

What an incredible day our boys soccer team had yesterday!

For a lot of our boys, it was their first time playing on a full field, and they represented themselves and our school with great pride.

Game 1: 10-0 WIN vs Swansea PS

Game 2: 6-0 WIN vs Floraville PS

Game 3: 3-0 LOSS vs Eleebana PS

Our journey in the competition has unfortunately come to an end, but the boys should be incredibly proud of their effort, attitude, and resilience demonstrated throughout the day. Two qualities that stood out the most were the outstanding sportsmanship and teamwork our boys consistently displayed.

We would like to wish Eleebana PS all the best in the next round of the competition.
