From the Principal

Term 2 has come and gone too fast.  I am sure that everyone is looking forward to a well-deserved break. A few points and reminders for your diaries: -

  • School will recommence Monday July 10
  • Report Cards for Semester 1 /2023 have been emailed and mailed to families (If requested).
  • Student/Parent/Teacher Interviews will be held on Wednesday 26 July (Week 3). Booking information will arrive in your end of Semester 1 mailout.

Term 3 Parent/Carer, Teacher, Student Meetings

We would love to see all our families at our families at the upcoming Parent/Carer/Teacher/Student Meetings.

I cannot stress enough the importance of parent/carers and their children meeting with our teachers. As mentioned in previous emails one of the biggest success factors for student outcomes is

positive parent engagement in learning:- It is known to lead to improved outcomes for students of all ages. Attendance at Parent/Carer, Teacher/Student Meeting during the year signals to students that their engagement and effort in school is important to all of us. That school is a collaborative place where their learning and engagement is valued, discussed and supported.

Parent engagement in learning encompasses parent involvement in schooling as well as a broader range of activities, including parent support for children’s learning at home, at school and in community contexts.

Parental engagement in learning underpins children and young people’s cognitive and social and emotional development, shapes family practices and behaviours, and can impact the nature of the school community and the experience of schooling. Parental engagement is therefore a highly significant leverage point for enhancing the academic attainment and wellbeing of children and young people (Emerson, Fear, Fox & Sanders, 2012, p. 34).”

Staffing Term 3

As you may be aware Miss Shay Klimo is finishing off at the end of this term. Shay has been an amazing asset to our school and breathed life in our Digital Technology Studies. We wish Miss Klimo the very best in her future endeavours.

Student Timetables

Unfortunately, staffing movement and timetable changes are inevitable at all schools throughout the year. However please know that at all times we work to create minimal disruption to student and teachers’ timetables.  We will be working on the timetable for Semester 2 throughout the holidays and into the first two weeks of Term 3. If required, students will be issued with new timetables as soon as changes are finalised. All students will engage in their Term 3 units of work across all subjects from the first day of Term 3.

Wishing all our families and staff members a relaxing winter break. Take care and look after each other.

See you next Term 😊

Josette Moffatt

From the Deputy Principal

My goodness where did the term go?  I can’t believe we are writing our last newsletter for Term 2.  This term has seen our students involved in many events academically, culturally and sporting.  Thank you to our school and wider community by supporting our students in challenge themselves to aim high with their attendance, curriculum and behaviour.

Ms Raelene Bates

From Head of Wellbeing & Engagement

Hello everyone,

Welcome to the end of Term 2. I hope that everyone has had a good term and is ready for a relaxing break. Over this term Miles SHS has worked very hard to increase student attendance and engagement across the school. Miles SHS have implemented new programs and additional supports to ensure we are supporting all students to achieve their full potential. We have seen a large increase in student attendance rates and a drop in student inappropriate behaviour.

It was great to see so many students engaged and competing at our athletics carnival this week. I believe it was the highest participation rate of students at the carnival since I have been at Miles SHS, so this was great to see. Thank you to all the students and parents that helped teachers out across all events. Sports carnivals are a great way for students to engage with teachers outside of a classroom and to build relationships. Furthermore, it is a great way for students to get out of their comfort zones and try new experiences.

I hope everyone has a lovely holiday and remains safe. I look forward to seeing students return in Term 3, all refreshed and ready for learning. You will hear from me at the start of Term 3. Enjoy, and stay safe 🙂

Josh Moore

Allow others to teach and learn

Our new banner can be found in each classroom displaying the expectation of our students in allowing others to teach and learn.  As part of Positive Behaviour, we illustrate the benefits of following our school expectations and the logical consequences when we don't.

From Head of Curriculum

Can you believe it? We are half way through the year. It is now time to reflect on how we are progressing through the year with the first round of official and final results. We always start the year off with great intentions but as the year progresses, we can find our motivation waning. Over the holidays ask your student: What are their goals? Are you on track? Have you put in your best effort? What can you do next semester to improve or stay on track? This is an import part of the education process. We need to reflect on what is working and what is not and make adjustments accordingly.

This year has seen the introduction of Junior School (years 7-8), Middle School (years 9-10) and Senior School (11-12). One of the outcomes of doing this, was track the progress of students learning at the end of each semester and reward those who are on track to achieving a Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) at the end of year 12. This will be done by awarding gold, silver and bronze achievement certificates in our week 3 awards parade.

For students who are achieving at a gold level they will have achieved an A in English, Mathematics, Science, plus an A in at least two of their other subjects. For students who are achieving at a silver level they will have achieved at least a B in English, Mathematics, Science, plus at least a B in at least two of the other subjects. And for students who are achieving at a bronze level they will have achieved at least a C in English, Mathematics, Science, plus at least a C in at least two of the other subjects. These students are the students who are on track to achieve QCE. This will also help students to understand how they are tracking through their education.

I hope that all students have a safe and restful holiday and come ready for the final semester of the year. I look forward to seeing what next term brings!
