Principal's Message

Dear Community

As we head towards the end of Term 3, we are starting to collate our student numbers for 2024. We are already at capacity for Kindy, so if you are aware of anyone who is yet to enrol, could you please encourage them to contact the school to put their name on the waiting list in case any spots open up. Also, if you are planning on leaving the school next year, could you please let the office know so that we can factor it into our planning.

This week, I would like to take the opportunity to acknowledge our wonderful music specialist, Mrs Bird. She has facilitated several opportunities for our Choir and Taiko drumming students to represent us out in the community over the last month.

  • Our Taiko Drummers have done an amazing job by adding to the atmosphere and inspiring athletes at the Interschool Cross Country, The City to Surf and our own athletics carnival. They took part in a video shoot for a Telethon promotion which will be seen on Channel 7 over the coming months and there will also be a 60 second segment on Channel 7 News this Sunday between 6 and 7pm about the promotion.
  • Our choir are currently getting ready to sing at the Massed Choir Festival next Saturday evening, with a final rehearsal scheduled at the Perth Concert Hall next Thursday.
  • Yesterday our Choir and Brass ensemble students visited Regents Garden to entertain the residents there. They received many compliments  as well as a thank you teddy and special morning tea for their efforts. It is lovely to see them using their talents to make other people smile!

Even though there are only two weeks left this term, we still have a lot of events coming up. Please see below for a list:

Upcoming Events

  • School Spelling Bee Monday 11/9
  • Rm 1 and 14 visit to WA Museum Tuesday 12/9
  • Interschool Jumps and Throws Wednesday 13/9
  • Massed Choir Rehearsal at Perth Concert Hall Thursday 14/9
  • Interschool Athletics Carnival Friday 15/9
  • Massed Choir Concert Saturday 16/9
  • Interschool Spelling Bee Tuesday 19/9

School Board

Our School Board met last Wednesday evening. As usual it was a meeting with a diverse range of topics covered, including the following:

  • A summary of the process that was undertaken to choose our new House Names.
  • A review of the 2023 NAPLAN results and discussions around strategies to ensure all our students are achieving their potential.
  • A Capital Works update, noting that the school will be undertaking the final stages of the move in the last week of Term 4. This included the endorsement of a letter to the Director General formally requesting school closure on 14 December (the last day of the year) to allow staff time to pack up their rooms. More information on the logistics of the move will be published in the next Newsletter.

Athletics Carnival

Congratulations to everyone involved in a fantastic Athletics Carnival last Friday. Well done to Kwila House for finishing first on the day. The medals for all of our champion girls and boys have been sent off to the engravers and will hopefully be back by the end of term. A massive thank you also needs to go to the wonderful parents who stayed to help pack up in rather soggy conditions at the end of the day. It was very much appreciated! We now shift our focus to the interschool where we have 30 students participating next Wednesday and 50 next Friday. Notes will come home with Interschool participants on Monday. Please see below for a list of our Athletics Champions for 2023:

  • Year 1: Anabelle, Katherine and Rory
  • Year 2: Lila and Dylan
  • Year 3: Leila and Declan
  • Year 4: Siena and Yann
  • Year 5: Eliyane, Leah and Jacob
  • Year 6: Steve and Loh-Relm

As always, if you have any queries, please do not hesitate to call, or email me on Sarah.Dawson@education.wa.edu.au

Voluntary Contributions

A big thank you to all families who have already paid their contributions. Your family’s contribution will go directly towards the purchase of resources and consumables needed in the provision of learning program activities.

P&C News

Hello SPS families!

We hope you all had a great Father's Day last weekend and the special guys in your lives liked their pizza herb pots! A huge thank you to the volunteers that potted about 160 of them, and to Bunnings for their donations. We were able to raise around $1300 for the school!

On Tuesday night we held our second P&C Meeting for the term and as always, had a lot to discuss. As the new build progresses, the staff are working on a wish list for the P&C. On Tuesday we approved over $1000 for cooking and Science equipment that will be used by the whole school.

Referendum Voting Day- volunteers and baked goods needed!

Can you cook a sausage or sell a cake? The P&C is seeking volunteers to help with our sausage sizzle and cake stall at The Voice referendum on Saturday 14 October. An hour of your time is all we need between 8:00 am - 12:00 pm. Please let us know if you can help and your preferred time slot.

We will be asking for donations of cakes/slices/biscuits with a list of ingredients attached to be dropped off to school on the day- keep your eye out for more information about this.

Grill’d Local Matters

For the month of September, Scarborough Primary P&C has a Local Matters Jar at Grill’d Scarborough. If we have the most tokens in our jar at the end of the month, the P&C will receive $300. So, make like Sienna in the photo above and place your vote for the school, while getting burger and helping the school community at the same time.

NEXT MEETING

Our next General Meeting will be held Tuesday 17 October, 2023 at 6:30 pm in the school library. It is a great opportunity to find out what is happening, make suggestions, and get an update on the progress of the new build! All welcome, we would love to see you there!

If you would like to be added to our mailing list to receive the agenda and minutes for our meetings, or have a suggestion, send us an email - scarboroughprimarypc@gmail.com.

UNIFORM SHOP

The Uniform Shop is open on Wednesday mornings 8:45 am to 9:15 am in Room 8. We are well stocked, with an excess of hats if you need a spare! We are planning to hold another second hand sale towards the end of the term. If you have any unwanted items, please donate them to the uniform shop on Wednesday mornings, or to the office during school hours.

Order forms can be downloaded from the school website https://scarboroughps.wa.edu.au/p-c/uniforms/

Emailed orders will be delivered to your child’s classroom or left at the office for collection. Please indicate on the form.

CANTEEN

We have been able to set up a canteen volunteer group so Laura, our wonderful Canteen Leader, has a few parents that are trained up and can help once or twice a term. There is always space for more volunteers, so if you would like to help out, please get in contact with Laura or Teneke (Canteen Coordinator).

The time needed to volunteer is Friday mornings between 11:00 am -12:30 pm.

Please also note that all canteen orders need to be placed via QuickCliq prior to 8:30 am on Friday.

ENTERTAINMENT BOOK

We continue to fundraise through the Entertainment Book. When you purchase the Entertainment Book, a portion will go to the P&C.

Order your membership here https://www.entertainment.com.au/orderbooks/86y129

CONTAINERS FOR CHANGE

We will continue to fundraise through the Containers for Change initiative. The Containers for Change bins can be found at the school entry at Hinderwell Street near the Room 9 Heritage Building. Keep on bringing those empty cans and bottles to support the P&C! Please note that we have previously given the wrong scheme ID, so double check next time you’re donating that it is the one above.

THESE BINS ARE NOT FOR RUBBISH BUT FOR ELIGIBLE EMPTY DRINK CONTAINERS ONLY, THANK YOU!

Alternatively, if you wish to donate at a refund point of your choosing you can quote our Scheme ID C10284773. If you prefer to attend a Reverse Vending Machine location, please use the barcode at the top of the P&C news. This may be your preference if you have a larger donation and be rest assured that the money goes back to the P&C.
