Term 2 Week 7 & 8: 10th - 21st June 2024

Principal's Blog

Welcome to Term 2 Week 8

Welcome to Week 8 Term 2 2024.

Make My Day

This week we have an incredible piece of writing from Evelyn C in 2M based on the book they are reading “The Mallee Sky” by Jodi Toering and Tannya Harricks.

Drought

The ancient ghost gums haunt the landscape, while the dehydrated plants remain silent. The tired windmill holds its whisper for a certain amount of time. Time stops. The brown grass gets cursed by the burning hot sun. The burnt trees plead to the blue sky for rain. The burnt crops lay against the spooky trees. Life is impossible under the Mallee sky.

Ruby, Hazel and Archie shared their wonderful writing on bees. Great job guys!

Athletics Carnival Thursday 27th June

As you will now all be aware, this year we will be holding the senior 3-6 Athletics Carnival at Baxter Oval on Thursday 27th June. Students from Yr 3- 6, and eligible  Yr 2 students, will be transported by bus for the event. The Yr 1, Kindergarten and remaining Yr 2 students will participate in their carnival to be held at school on the same day. We understand that there will be some inconvenience to parents who have students at both locations but this has been unavoidable due to the soggy condition of Swansea High School oval. This hiring of Baxter Oval and added transport organisation and cost has highlighted how luckY we are at CBPS to usually have the use of SHS oval.

Starstruck

Congratulations to staff and students who were involved in Starstruck this year. The feedback has been very positive. Starstruck is always an amazing spectacle and we are glad our students were able to enjoy this experience.

Lego

A very special thank you to Crystal McGuigan the principal at Mark’s Point PS. Crystal purchased a bulk supply of Lego for her school and generously donated some of the Lego sets to ours and the other schools in the Galgabba CoS. Thank you Ms McGuigan you are a legend!

Class of the Week

5/6T

In 5/6T, we're all about starting our lessons with enthusiasm and readiness to learn. We are a creative bunch, with budding musicians, artists and performers making our classroom a fun place to be.

We’ve been drumming to our own beat each Tuesday with Drum Corp. Creating musical rhythms has our hearts pumping and our bodies moving.

Our recent adventure with ‘The Wild Robot’ took us on a thrilling journey of character exploration and narrative creation. We're also passionate about making a difference in the world around us. Saving Macquarie Island and protecting its unique flora and fauna is important to us. Reading ‘One Small Island’ has made us advocates of the environment and ready to make a positive impact.

And let's not forget about stepping up and taking on leadership roles. As part of the buddy reading program, we've been listening to and providing positive feedback to our younger students, fostering a love of reading across the school.

Stay tuned for more adventures and accomplishments from 5/6T!

Beanie for Brain Cancer

Last Friday we held a fundraiser for Beanie for Brain Cancer and raised $380.  Thank you to all who wore their beanies and donated to this worthwhile cause.

Public Speaking Finals

Congratulations to all of our finalists who presented their speech at the Yak Off on Wednesday. They were all very entertaining and were of a high standard!

Our winners moving through to the Galgabba finals are:

EARLY STAGE ONE - Ruby and Gabby

STAGE ONE - Shiloh and Liana

STAGE TWO - Macaulay and Nina

STAGE THREE - Jed and Dusty

Star Struck

We are so proud of our Star Struck girls. It was a big weekend of dancing and we couldn’t be more proud of them. Star struck is a massive commitment for both students, parents and teachers. Mrs Tonks and Miss Brewster did an excellent job!

Grow Your Mind

Another important Grow Your Mind concept to look after our mental health

is Shark vs. Dolphin thoughts

We are faced with many situations each day and it is vital we use our

OWL and ELEPHANT to help us make wise decisions.

For example, you make a mistake on your work.

A shark thought is a harmful thought about yourself. You can challenge this thinking with dolphin thoughts. These are an optimistic way of thinking.

“Everyone makes mistakes, we learn from our mistakes”

“I have the confidence to try again”

“I can ask someone for help”

If you have a Shark thought how will you turn it into a Dolphin thought?

Learning and Support

Did you know (Part 2)

ADHD co-occurs with many other disabilities and disorders.

Children with ADHD are significantly more likely to have a sleep disorder, oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), a learning disability (such as dyslexia) or an anxiety disorder, than children without ADHD (From Kooij JJS et al. J Atten Disord 2012; 16(5 Suppl): 3S-19S.).

ADHD and intelligence

ADHD is a specific learning difficulty and is unrelated to intelligence. Children with ADHD are frequently curious, creative, imaginative and inventive when thinking outside the box. Additionally, the research suggests children with ADHD can excel in environments that are stimulating, challenging, busy, fast paced, motivating and full of novelty due to their energy, spontaneity, enthusiasm and sense of humour.

Celebrate the unique abilities and characteristics of children and teens with ADHD.

They secured convincing victories over Marks Point and Swansea in the first two rounds.
