Principals Report

Dear Parents/Carers,

Excitement is building here at Beerwah State School as our biannual Arts Week approaches. Our student’s visual art masterpieces will be exhibited in the Hall on Thursday afternoon, 29th August.  More information regarding this afternoon will be sent out next week.

One of the most exciting curriculum events leading up to the Arts week is the Raw Art Workshops for all students run by Raw Art, Brisbane. These workshops are designed to immerse students in visual art, experimenting with various media under the instruction of professional artists. These workshops have taken place in classrooms this week and our students certainly have created some wonderful pieces to showcase at our Arts Week exhibition.

Book Week

During the lead up to Book Week, students will be exploring short listed books during their library lessons. Beerwah State School will once again be celebrating book week this year with our annual book week parade to be held on Thursday  22nd of August from 9 – 9:30 am. Students are invited to dress as a “Magical” book character for the day and we will be awarding prizes for the Best junior costume, Best senior costume and a special prize for the best parent costume.  We encourage parents to come along in costume and join in the festivities.

School Opinion Survey

Today is the last day to complete the 2024 School Opinion Survey

School Opinion Surveys canvass the views of parents/caregivers, students in Years 5 & 6 and school staff from every state school on what our schools do well and how they can improve.

Opinions on the school, student learning and student well-being are sought from parent/caregiver in all families and students (Years 5 & 6) from each state school.

Our Year 5 & 6 students have completed this survey at school.

An invitation to complete the Parent/Caregiver Survey will be emailed to one parent/caregiver per family in the week beginning 15 July.  The invitation was sent from the Department of Education, not the school, and it will have the subject line School Opinion Survey for parents and caregivers, 2024.

Check your junk email folders if you can’t find it.  The survey can be completed as soon as the invitation is received and will take approximately 5 minutes using a computer, tablet or smart phone.

I would ask all parents/carers who receive an email, to complete this survey as the more surveys completed, the more meaningful the data will be for our school.

Have a great weekend.

Scott Bowden

Arts Show

Excitement is building here at Beerwah State School as our biannual Arts Week approaches. It will happen in Term 3 Week 8.

The Arts show will occur in our school hall on Thursday 29 August. It will be from 3:00 – 4:00pm. There will also be performances by our school band and Dembele group.

Everyone is invited to view the amazing artworks our students will create.

Student council will be fundraising by selling coffee, cake and popper juices.

Practicing Reading

The Department of Education has released an excellent video for parents and carers that shows how to support reading at home. This is particularly focussed on the early years of school (P-2) and shows how to support with word reading. I highly recommend having a look at these very practical examples.

REMINDER NOTICES

Our school will be using a new Departmental process for sending reminder notices to parents/carers with overdue invoices. Reminder notices will generate periodically once your invoice becomes overdue.

How you will receive the reminder notice:
  • If you have provided us with an email address and you have overdue invoices, you will start to receive reminder notices directly to your email address
  • If you have not provided us with an email address, reminder notices for any overdue invoices will be posted to you.

ACCOUNT QUERIES

If you are unable to pay your invoices before the due date or have a query about an invoice you have received, it is important that you contact us before the invoice is due for payment.

PAYMENT OPTIONS

Beerwah State School is excited to offer all parents the ability to order and pay for your child’s school items using your smartphone, tablet or computer. The new Qkr! (pronounced ‘quicker’) by MasterCard application is a secure and easy way to make school payments at your convenience. We encourage all parents to use Qkr! as it reduces the need to send cash to school or attend in person, and receipts are automatically generated that can be easily retrieved on the app or sent to your email. It is easier for families and it also significantly streamlines operations with the school.  QKR! How to Guide
QKR! is our preferred method for payment via the secure QKR! App.
  • You Can also pay via the secure BPoint  payment portal in QParents.
  • You can also pay via the BPoint link on the invoice you receive via email
  • Cashless payments can be made at the Payment Window by EFTPOS on Monday, Wednesday & Friday morning between 8:30am-10:30am
  • Students may hand permission & payment to the office in a sealed envelope or snaplock bag.

HOME-SCHOOL COMMUNICATION

Please refer to the Communication Placemat that is available on our website to determine the appropriate method and avenue of communication for any information you require. If you are unsure, please email the school via admin@beerwahss.eq.edu.au and your query will be passed on to the appropriate staff member.

We welcome parents and other members of our diverse community into our school. Working together with the school community, school staff support the learning and wellbeing of every student, and are entitled to a safe work environment. Parents and other visitors to our school support safety by ensuring their communications and conduct at the school and school activities is respectful. Please read our Parent and Community Code of Conduct for more information.

STUDENT MESSAGES AND EARLY COLLECTION

We realise sometimes Parents need to get a message to student/s to change how they are going home, with whom, or need to collect student/s early. We ask Parents, where possible, to please contact the school at their earliest convenience prior to 1:00pm; to advise so messages can go out in rolls and minimise interruptions to class learning time.

Please call prior to arriving to collect student/s so we can have them in the office ready for your arrival. Our break times are 11:00am-11:30am & 1:00pm-1:40pm. We thank you for your support.

CHANGE OF DETAILS

Up to date information helps us look after each of our students. Contact details can be updated through the BSS Skoolbag, QParents app or SZ app. For a hard copy to complete and return, please download from the sidepanel of our school newsletter or website.

Student Services

At Beerwah, the Student Services team meets every second week to discuss how best to support our students’ learning and support needs.  Sometimes students’ needs are identified on enrolment or through our moderation process and other times individual student needs are identified by teachers.

Classroom teachers may discuss student needs with parents and carers and if necessary a referral will be made to the Student Services team.  If this is necessary, a green permission form will be sent home, explaining the process and we encourage you to complete the questionnaire on the rear of the form to help us to understand the needs of your student more clearly.

Our team are currently running an intervention program focussing on supporting students requiring additional support in the areas of phonemic awareness and phonics.

What’s growing in Kitchen Garden?

Year 5/6 classes are finishing their SAKG rotation for this year this week.  We have been busy planting many crops including potatoes, lettuce, capsicums and beans.  We have filled up garden beds with new soil, raked leaves, spread mulch and weeded, weeded, weeded.

As part of students’ technology unit, they have also constructed sustainable, moveable herb gardens for Head chef Rachel for the SAKG kitchen.  They have worked very well together showing great skills of collaboration, co-operation and problem solving. See some of their designs. Also, a huge thanks to groundsman Rob who helped with construction.

Students will be coming home with a book full of delicious recipes that Rachel has inspired students to cook.  Many of these can be managed by your students at home so, let them loose in the kitchen.

Classes 2/3, 1/2 and Year 1 from Prep/1 will start in week 8.

2024 Premier's Reading Challenge

We are once again participating in the annual Premier’s reading challenge. From 7th of May until the 23rd of August, students record the books that they read at school and home. Students will have access to record sheets from week 4 to start recording their reading.

The challenge is not a competition but aims to improve literacy and encourage children to read widely for pleasure and learning.

For Prep — Year 6 students to successfully complete the challenge they must read or experience an allocated number of books based upon their year level during the reading period.

Children and students who complete the challenge will have their efforts recognised through the receipt of a Certificate of Achievement.

P&C Report

P&C Meetings

Our next meeting is scheduled for next Monday 19th August (week 7) at 6pm in the library. In this next meeting we will begin discussing the end of year and start to think about what 2025 will look like for students and parents of Beerwah State School.

Come along and join us and see how you can be a part of a really important group of caring parents and citizens who want to make a difference in our children’s schooling lives.

Volunteering

Did you know: Volunteering is all about community building. Helping at your child’s school is a terrific way to connect with teachers, staff, other parents, and your kid’s classmates. By offering support throughout the school year and learning more about the people involved in your child’s education ecosystem, you will build stronger relationships and bonds with those in the community with your child.

The P&C Association are an approved volunteer organization with Centrelink (Services Australia) so if you need to complete volunteering hours, the school is a great option. This can be extended to grandparents and other friends, they will need to apply for a Blue Card to volunteer in the school which is an easy process we can assist with. Contact us by email and we can arrange to work out how we can help each other.

Facebook Page

If you haven’t already jumped onto our Facebook page, you should. It’s a great place to see what’s coming up, what volunteers are needed & helpful reminders in case you missed the notification. We’ll also share our tuckshop specials and any meal deal information, so if you don’t see the posts, you might miss out!

It’s also the easiest place to get in touch with P&C.

Just find our page and like us to start following.

BSS P&C Facebook page

Recycling Programs

Don’t forget to keep saving your empty toothpaste tubes and old toothbrushes, also any pens, texters, highlighters and markers that are no longer working. We collect these items to send to TerraCycle who will turn them into useful products. If you’d like to know more, please have a look at their website www.terracycle.com.au. We are also collecting used Glad (or similar) products – glad wrap, zip lock bags etc, but please make sure they are clean.

Donations can be dropped off to school, collection boxes are available in the library, look out for the notice on Audiri (Skoolbag) for more information.

The school is also registered to collect drink cans and bottles through Containers for Change. There are bins throughout the school so you can drop off your recycling as you bring your child to school.

Events & Fundraising

Our next event will be the Father’s Day stall on Thursday of week 8 (same day as the art show). The stall will be in the room at the end of the library from 9-11am. If you are able to assist in the morning, please reach out to P&C on pandc@beerwahss.eq.edu.au

Book Club

The next issue of book club will be distributed soon. The best way to order is online at www.scholastic.com.au/LOOP all books are delivered to the school and distributed to each child. If you would prefer to order as gifts, ensure you select that option and your items will be available for collection from the office. The due date for orders is always stamped on the front of the brochure so don’t miss out! An extra bonus is that the school receives 15% of all order values to purchase books for our library. Books are such a wonderful addition to any child’s life and there are some amazing prices in the book club.

TUCKSHOP

Tuckshop will continue to be open each Friday, first break only during term 3. All ordering will be via Qkr! which will be made available approximately one week before. All orders need to be placed by 6pm the Thursday prior so our volunteers have time to shop. The menu can be viewed on the tuckshop noticeboard and on Skoolbag. Each week there is a different special for $5 and additional snacks and drinks can be ordered too.

If you have a little time on Friday morning to give Sarah a hand, she would be very grateful. Just 20 minutes to chop some fruit, or stick the labels on bags, that would be a huge help. Running the tuckshop is not a job for just one volunteer!  pandc@beerwahss.eq.edu.au

THE UNIFORM SHOP HAS MOVED!!

The school uniforms have been collected and will soon be available online and in store at The School Locker, Maroochydore. All items will be available from Monday 19th August.

The School Locker is a one-stop-shop for all your school needs, including uniforms, musical instruments, sports items, lunch boxes, water bottles, socks and so much more.

All families have received instructions about online ordering, it’s so simple and convenient. Plus, by setting up your free Student Advantage Membership online, you will access special members pricing where applicable.

If you are uncertain of the size you require, one of each size of polo shirt and dress will be available in school to try on. Appointments need to be made in advance, please email janie.bssuniformshop@gmail.com to arrange an appointment.

We appreciate your support during this transition. If you have any questions about this, please email P&C at pandc@beerwahss.eq.edu.au

Kandoo Joeys' Playgroup

August – Literacy Month

Each month we have a different theme at Kandoo Joeys Playgroup and the theme for August is Literacy Play. When children engage in storytelling, literacy games, reading and activities it not only enhances language skills it also allows children to use their imagination and build critical thinking skills and empathy. Everyday experiences are full of opportunities to expand on children’s emerging literacy and language skills. Experiences such as chatting to your baby or child, pointing out that we read from left to right and encourage them to turn the page, pointing to the letters in your child’s name and suggesting they find them in the real world like of food packaging.

We provide an environment in which children feel safe and have fun. Afternoon tea is included.

We are located in D Block which is next to the Senior oval. Strategies to support anxious children

Given the ongoing COVID issues/ implications and other stressors on families, it seems timely to share this helpful website from Beyond Blue: https://healthyfamilies.beyondblue.org.au/age-6-12/mental-health-conditions-in-children/anxiety/strategies-to-support-anxious-children

The 10 practical ideas are aimed at children aged 6 to 12 years. Please consider the 9th strategy which involves an interactive, online program for the prevention and treatment of childhood and adolescent anxiety. This free program which was developed at the University of Queensland, has programs for a range of ages and parents: https://brave4you.psy.uq.edu.au/
