Narrabri West – a very busy learning environment

The last few weeks of this term are going to be extremely busy at Narrabri West. But as well as being busy, they are going to be very exciting, with lots of fun activities planned. This term has once again seemed to have just disappeared and it is amazing that we are already talking about end of term activities.

It is also quite obvious that there is a lot happening in our school that we should all be really proud of. Our Kindergarten students are developing impressively, making wonderful progress and maturing quickly. They are committing themselves to their learning and their learning goals, they are working extremely hard and doing the best they possibly can.

Teachers in all classrooms are working very hard to enrich student learning through high expectations and explicit, effective teaching.

All in all, Narrabri West is an exciting place to be at the moment. I hope that you take a moment to reflect on the year so far, appreciate the wonderful opportunities that students have each day and celebrate how hard they have worked to obtain the most out of their schooling.

As always, we have been impressed with the excitement and enthusiasm shown by our students during the special occasions we have had already this term. We look forward to even more exciting opportunities and challenges in the weeks ahead, as we edge closer to Term 4.

New teacher at Narrabri West

We would like to welcome Miss Rachael Barnes. Miss Barnes said she is really excited to be teaching 5/6S at Narrabri West Public School and working with the staff and students.

Stage One News

Once again Stage One have kicked off the term with a busy start. They thoroughly enjoyed practising for their performance of their Eisteddfod poem in the first few weeks of term. The performance at the Education Week Assembly was testament to the hard work of the students and the Stage One teachers.  Well-done everyone.

In English sessions this term, students are learning to write their own story. They have looked at the way narratives are structured and the features authors use to engage their audience. Students are currently creating characters of their own. Students have been reading the story Tikki Tikki Tembo and analysing the way the author uses language features to engage the audience. Be sure to ask your child/children about Tikki Tikki Tembo’s longer name.

In health we have been learning all about our bodies and how we have changed over time. We have also explored the role and function of the human skeleton.

In Maths balancing numbers was the focus at the beginning of Term 3 in Year One. We discovered that there are many symbols and words used to describe quantities. Students learnt to count on and count back to solve number problems. They learnt that all numbers can be partitioned into smaller numbers for example  8 can be partitioned into 5 and 3 or 6 and 2. Students also enjoyed learning a new game called ‘Solute’ to help us find missing numbers. We have moved our focus across to measurement and geometry for the next few weeks where students will use lots of hands-on material  while developing their knowledge and skills in measurement and geometry.

In PE the students have been focussing on developing their fundamental movement skills while participating in gymnastics. Thes have been learning to demonstrate the correct vertical jump, leap, land and balance techniques. Students have had lots of fun participating in gymnastics with Mrs Bennett.

‘Energy comes in different forms’ is our science unit for this term. Within this unit we will focus on our key inquiry question- ‘What are the different forms of energy around us and how can we detect them?’ So far, we have looked at our 5 senses, what they are and how we use them. Over the next few weeks we will look at where light, sound and heat come from.

We are very privileged to teach this wonderful group of young students and look forward to supporting them on their learning journey in Term Three and Four.

Stage Two News

Term 3 has certainly had a busy start and our stage two students have taken it on with great application. All students have settled well into their learning, working hard towards achieving their academic and personal goals. They are to be praised for their efforts with their learning and attitude towards all extra-curricular activities. Students have participated in Education Week, Jeans for Genes Day, School and Zone Athletics as well as attending the MADD performance at the high school.

Education week saw lots of events occurring within the stage two classrooms. Students continued to practice the poems, “Thirteen” by Margaret Speter and ’76 Flood’, by Ian Slacksmith.  The students enjoyed the chance to perform these once again, especially to those parents who could not attend the Eisteddfod. Stage Two also performed “Count on Me” by Bruno Mars. A special thank you goes to Mr. Bailey for all the preparation and advice to make this such a great production. It was great to see a huge turnout of stage two parents, who then stayed for a picnic lunch and classroom visits. All our parents participated enthusiastically in creating comics and playing Maths games with their children. During Education Week, students participated in a variety of group games involving students across all year levels. As always, Stage two demonstrated great sportsmanship and participation.

Stage two students have some exciting events happening during the rest of the term. Year 4 students are very excited about the opportunity to run assemblies and showcase their confidence when speaking in public. Lake Keepit preparations are well underway and we look forward to seeing Year 4 students challenging themselves in a range of activities during camp. All stage two students will be participating in a Touch Footy Gala Day at Cooma Oval, Thursday the 24th of August.

Students have been learning about a remarkable friendship, that was developed after the tsunami struck the coastal town of Malindi, Kenya, in 2004. Owen and Mzee is a story that students have become very engaged and interested in, during English lessons. Students are in the process of planning and writing a factual recount of the events that took place before and after the natural disaster.

Our Mathematics lessons continue to focus on skills that will help the students in real-life situations. Stage two have been focusing on developing skills for using position. Activities have included, using a compass, grid coordinates and creating directions for others to follow. We have also looked at strategies to use when completing addition and subtraction problems, giving students the opportunity to develop the confidence to select the strategy that is most efficient. During the rest of the term, we will be concentrating on volume and capacity, fractions and decimals as well as chance.

Sway is a program that Stage two students will be using to improve their technology skills and to produce quality publishing of their factual recounts in English. It allows creativity in how students present their publishing to others.

Students will be exploring natural environments and the way humans and animals interact with and the impact they have on these environments. This will result in students researching endangered animals and devising their own action plans to protect these animals before it is too late. It is impressive to see the thoughts and initiative that our students display.

This term during Creative Arts we are using a music program called “Amplify”. This program will enhance the knowledge of students when listening to and creating music. Students have been exploring and demonstrating their understanding of pitch, beat and rhythm. It is a fun-filled unit, with music professionals giving students an insight into the skills and techniques that are used.

Continue to check in on SeeSaw often, to see the achievements, goals, Friday Journals, activities and learning taking place within the classrooms. Students thoroughly enjoy posting their completed activities for you to see. We look forward to continuing to share these posts throughout the rest of the exciting term ahead.

Stage Two,

Mrs Keys, Miss Dunmall, Mrs Phillips, Mr Paull, Mrs Pursche and Miss Farelly.

Education Week 2023

Education Week 2023: 175 Years of Public Education

We celebrate our achievements throughout the NSW public education system.

We celebrate the significant contribution public education has made to society over the past 175 years.

We celebrate the work of teachers and support staff in developing and shaping the next generation.

We celebrate all types of learning that occurs at all levels across our education system.

We celebrate our shared responsibility in helping to shape the lives and futures of today’s learners and we embrace the future with confidence.

At Narrabri West Public School we are energised by the ways our school is preparing young people to be agile thinkers and lifelong learners from their first days in Preschool education to High School transition.

A very large crowd attended our Education Week Assembly and celebrations. Parents and friends visited classrooms where students proudly presented their work and demonstrated very clearly the progress they have made and how clever they are. The students certainly enjoyed the opportunity to show what they have learnt so far this year. Families enjoyed a picnic lunch in the school grounds and the children participated in traditional playground games including, elastics, skipping, hoops, hopscotch, heel and toe polka and three-legged races.

Please encourage anyone you know who has children commencing school in 2024 to advise the school so that we can accurately commence planning. Students attending local preschools should have received packages promoting our school, highlighting our achievements and inviting them to consider Narrabri West. Sickness at school

We realise it is often difficult to decide whether or not to send your children to school. However, if they are obviously unwell in the morning it would be wise to keep them at home. If you send them to school sick, it will take longer for them to get over it, it could become worse and in the process they may pass it on to someone else as well. Please give this some close consideration.

We have soap available in all our toilets for the children to use and encourage good personal hygiene at all times.

Compulsory school attendance

Education for your child is important and regular attendance at school is essential for your child to achieve their educational best and increase their career and life options. NSW public schools work in partnership with parents to encourage and support regular attendance of children and young people. When your child attends school every day, learning becomes easier and your child will build and maintain friendships with other children.

School attendance and Audiri app

Thank you to everyone who sends in Audiri notifications or emails informing us of your child/ren’s absences as they occur.

If your child is sick for 3 consecutive days, you are required to provide the school with a medical certificate.

Parents/carers are required by law to provide an explanation to the school to say why their child was absent from school. A note of explanation should contain:

1.     Date that the note was written

2.     Child’s name

3.     Days/dates the child was absent from school

4.     The reason the child was absent

5.     The signature of the child’s parent/carer

Or complete the online absence note on our Audiri app.

If you notify the school of an absence on one day, we cannot assume the same reason for being absent on consecutive days.

If more than one child from the same family has been absent, a separate note for each child should be written.

A note should be brought to school or a Audiri notification update, on the first day the student returns to school after an absence. If not, we are required to investigate all unexplained absences (where a child has been absent and no explanation has been received) within two days.

Notifying the school of absences through the Audiri app, by phone, email or note are all acceptable.
