Beaudesert State School Newsletter

Term 1 2025

Principal’s Report

Mrs Chant

As we start a new school year, I sincerely hope you are all safe and well after the recent TC Alfred weather event. Thank you for your continued support as we ensured our school was safe to be back on site. We are now full steam ahead with the remainder of the school term.

Last year was huge celebration for our School Improvement work around English. Staff who work here know this is a great school and we have been working on English improvement for the last 4 years because this is our lowest performing subject area. We are now very proud to announce to our community that at the end of 2024 92% of Beaudesert students achieved an A-C in English and 52% of students achieved an A-B achievement.

There is so much work that goes into supporting students to reach their potential and to be proud of their individual achievement. Some students and families require more support than others, in and out of the classroom every single day to reach their potential. Beyond classroom support we also provide free breakfasts each day, staff wash warm uniforms and make them available for free to students and families in the colder months and we provide school lunches and dinners to students who require it. These results are a huge achievement for our school and community, and I want to thank you for your continued partnership over the years.

Our School Improvement Priorities this year are:

1.       Continue the trajectory of improvement in English.

2.       Supporting successful student and family transitions from Early Learning Centres and into high school.

In 2026 we are due for our next School Review where an independent review team from the Department of Education will visit our school, speaking to staff, students, families, and community around the next steps for Beaudesert State School. This occurs in all state schools.

Farewell Miss Stacey

Last week Miss Stacie Fogarty accepted a position with Regional Office team at the Department of Education and we wish her all the very best in her new role.

Snakes on site

This term we have been very clear in communicating that we have snakes on site. Posters are around our school identifying where a snake has been confirmed and our students are frequently taught what to do if they see a snake. Please exercise caution as you walk around our school in the warmer months. If you see a snake, please call the front office team on 5540 1111.

Changes to our newsletter

Our newsletter is published once a term with our main communication method via our school app, Audiri. The front office team are very happy to help you set this up on your mobile device.

Before and after school reminders

We always love having families at our school. It is lovely to see so many happy faces here.

When students arrive before school, they need to make their way to the Undercover Area and wait for the Teacher Aides to commence supervision at 8:15am where they can either play on the Oval (weather pending) or stay in the Undercover Area for quiet play. There is no supervision prior to this time.

Families who choose to stay with their child until the bell are reminded that the front of the school on Tina Street is not a play area and no students should be in this area. All playgrounds across the school are closed before and after school. If your children are with you before school and not in the Undercover Area or Oval, they should be waiting quietly with you and not running around our classrooms or office spaces. Students who are not in your immediate family must report to the Undercover area for supervision. Our staff commence their days early and are in meetings before school, mowing, completing maintenance work and students need to be in the designated area to remain safe.

Brekky Club

Students and families can access our free Brekky Club from 8:00am – 8:30am daily in the Tuckshop area. At Brekky Club students can also access fresh fruit which they can take for fruit break in the morning session.

Custody orders

A reminder to let us know if there are any custody orders in place for your child so we can ensure we’re following the correct arrangements. It’s important that we have the most up-to-date information to keep all students safe. We also ask everyone to be extra mindful when it comes to students speaking to adults who do not work at our school. If you ever notice something that doesn’t seem right; whether it’s a student talking to someone they shouldn’t be or anything that feels out of place, please let a staff member know straight away. Keeping our school safe is a team effort, and we truly appreciate your support with this.

Road Safety

Does your child know the safest route to and from school and are they following it? Are your children walking on the designated pathways or in the middle of the road? Does your child wear a helmet if they ride a scooter or bike to school? Have you taught your child about stranger danger?

We have increased reporting by community members and staff concerned that Beaudesert State School students are not wearing helmets, are playing on busy streets, running across busy streets rather than using the designated crossings, walking onto the road from behind parked cars and walking in the middle of the road as they travel to and from school. Staff also see students riding their bikes and scooters without helmets or throwing sticks at cars. Please take the time to teach your children about the safest route to get to school, behaviour that keeps themselves and others safe and stranger danger. We all want Beaudesert students to stay safe in our community.

Online Safety

Every year, we have reports that Beaudesert students are engaging in behaviours online that are unsafe, sexually explicit or bullying outside of our school. These incidents are always a police matter, and all families are strongly encouraged to make a report to the local police if you believe children are unsafe online. Our school computer systems are closely monitored at school and students cannot access online social media platforms. As an additional preventative measure, we also run ThinkYKnow student sessions run by the local police and the Australian Federal Police. These free sessions are age appropriate and will run from Prep – Year 6 on Thursday 1st May. A parent information session will also run from 2:00pm – 2:50pm in R Block on the same day. All parents are strongly encouraged to attend this presentation.

As a parent myself, I have completed numerous ThinkYKnow sessions and continue to be shocked by the way children are groomed and exploited online. This session will provide you with practical advice to keep your children safe online from as young as Kindy, signs to look for and how to make a report if you have any concerns at all. Further information for parents can be found at   https://www.thinkuknow.org.au/

Healthy Mouth Day

Our friends at the QLD Health Dental Clinic on site run annual Healthy Mouth Day sessions for students in Prep, Year 1 and Year 6. Permission forms have been sent home and are returned to your class teacher. These sessions are free.

Administration of medication at school

All medication is administered via the front office only. If your child requires medication in a school day, please call the front office team to arrange the required paperwork. We are all bound by the Department of Education policies around the administration of medication.

Camps and Excursions

As the school year progresses, there will be opportunities for students to participate in camps, excursions and incursions. Payment plans can be arranged via Sandy Currie, our Business Manager. Please call the front office team to arrange a time to discuss options. We are always happy to help with this.

Parent Teacher Interviews

Parent Teacher interviews will be held on Monday 24th March from 3:10pm – 6:00pm in our Hall. Parents book a meeting request through SOBS:  https://eq.sobs.com.au/pt3/parent.php?schoolid=70250

Our parents are very welcome to request additional time to meet with their teacher on a different day. If you meet with your teacher and would like to discuss a topic further, please email them directly to arrange. We can also arrange phone interviews. Our parents are always encouraged to know their child’s teacher and their child’s progress over the school year and our teachers are very happy to meet with you at a time that is convenient for you both.

Uniform Policy

A reminder that our uniform policy is expected to be followed up until the end of the school year. For the 2025 school year, our P&C have approved the ‘No School Hat = No Play’ policy. All Beaudesert State School students are expected to have a school hat every day. Currently a large proportion of our students are not following this expectation.

At the recent P&C meeting, the team endorsed the below Beaudesert State School uniform policy for 2025.

  • School uniform shirt or sports shirt.
  • Plain maroon shorts or skirts. No patterns.
  • Plain maroon jumper / track pants. No patterns.
  • Plain maroon wide brimmed hat. No patterns. No school hat = no play in 2025.

Car Park Safety

We continue to have families that walk through the Ecole Street staff carpark with children. This is an incredibly dangerous area to be taking your children and I highly discourage you from using this space at any time. This is considered an out of bounds zone for our students during the school day. You can help keep our students safe by walking around this area on the oval or use our pedestrian walkway from Ecole Street as you enter our school.

JC Action:

JC action will be retuning again this year with even bigger and better stunts than last year. This company work on providing fun and entertaining show that identifies key needs of students in regards to their wellbeing and supports and encourages them through this journey. Last year was a big hit and we can’t wait to welcome them back again in week 10 for a show stopping, not to be missed performance.

Behaviour

We’ve had an increase in the number of incidents on the oval at play breaks. These incidents involve inappropriate hands-on behaviour. A reminder that we do not accept this type of behaviour at our school and students are to be safe, responsible and respectful of each other at all times.

Attendance

Cylcone Alfred threw a spanner in the works for our attendance, but we are back on track this week. Well done! I understand that some students have been absent due to illness and have been impacted by ex-tropical Cyclone Alfred but some students continue to be absent due to birthdays or having a shopping day, these reasons are not acceptable. Our average school attendance is sitting at 85% which means students are missing key learning opportunities. If there are barriers getting your child to school, could you please reach out and speak with your child’s class teacher or contact the school. We’d like to support parents and students to ensure attendance is a priority.

The graph below shows the class with the highest attendance for the term. They are in the running for the end of term pizza party.

2025 Student Leaders

Becoming a Leader - By Bronte 6B

Becoming a leader is an important responsibility, I am proud to be one of the School Captains for 2025. This term our school held the year 6 Leaders Induction parade where myself and my fellow leaders were officially recognised in front of our school community and our families. This was a special moment for me and the other leaders. During the parade Mrs Chant spoke about what it means to be a leader, she spoke about the importance of respect, responsibility and teamwork. Leaders are role models for other students and help make the school a better place. We all received a leadership badge and made a pledge to follow the school rules and support and lead the other students. As leaders we also got to have our first go at talking on stage and helping run the parade, putting our leadership skills to the test.  We are excited for more opportunities to lead our school proudly and have a positive impact. This is just the beginning of our leadership journey!

Classroom Reports

Prep

The Preps have settled into the school environment well and have had a very productive start to the year. We have loved being a part of this incredibly exciting part of their lives encouraging their love of learning from day 1. The preps have also been busy learning in Literacy, Maths, Science and Art. They have been practicing their fine and gross motor skills each week using Finger Gym, Animal Fun program and the obstacle course. The preps have made excellent progress learning their Jolly Phonics sounds which is the first big step into the world of reading and writing. They have had fun learning about patterns, length and counting in Maths and have enjoyed observing the weather in Science – our unpredictable weather lately has made for great discussions around how the weather effects people and other living things. The preps are now starting to begin their English unit where they learn to communicate opinions and experiences about the books we read. Remember to check the Audiri App to keep up to date with upcoming events. For example - Under 8’s Day, Healthy Mouth Day and Term 3 incursion. Please check out the photo gallery below to see all the fun we've been having.

Prep Team

Year 1

Year 1 students have settled well into the classroom environment this year and are enjoying adventuring around the school during lunch breaks. In English, students have been learning about recounts and giving opinions. They have been learning how to order the steps of an activity, and to use time connectives. The students have particularly enjoyed icing biscuits as part of their learning. In Maths, students have been investigating the features of 2D and 3D shapes and have been exploring length and capacity using informal measurement. In Science, students have been learning about how light and sound is produced, and how sounds can be altered. They have enjoyed making loud and quiet sounds in the classroom with their bodies, instruments and items they have found around the school.

Year 2

Year 2 have had an amazing first term, making new friends within our classrooms and implementing PBL focuses each week.  For writing, students have been using persuasive techniques to write an opinion based on a character from the text The Very Cranky Bear.  In HASS, students are learning about how people are connected to different places in the local and wider areas, and why these places hold significance to them.  They are exploring the world’s map by looking at its features and its continents.  In Science, students are learning about forces and designing a toy, and making moderations to change the toy’s push/pull on a surface.  We look forward to strutting our stuff in Week 10 for the Easter Hat Parade – hope to see you there! The Year 2 Team.

Year 3

What a great start to the year we have all had!

We have had a busy start to the year with everyone settling in well to Year 3.

English: In English, the students have been learning how to write a persuasive text where they will be persuading Mrs Chant to build Year 3 and 4 a new playground.

Mathematics: In Mathematics, the students have been learning about chance and data, along with number patterning and the connection of Addition and Subtraction. The students are developing a strong understanding of these fundamental concepts through a range of engaging activities and hands-on experiences.

Science: In Science, we are learning about living and non-living. The students have learnt how to group living and non-living things based on their observable features.

Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS): In HASS, our focus is on celebration and commemorations, where we are learning the importance of different celebration and commemorations for different groups.

Overall, it has been a fantastic term and we are incredibly proud of the hard work and dedication our Year 3 students have shown this far.

Thank you for your ongoing support and involvement in your child’s education. Your encouragement and engagement play a crucial role in their success.

Warm regards,

The Year 3 Teachers

Year 4

What an interesting (and a little bit crazy) term we are having in Year 4 and as life does, it is flying by.

You may have noticed that the Year 4s are very apt at identifying the very clever ‘tricks’ or as we know them persuasive devices (language and visual features) that advertisers use to try and convince us that we simply must purchase their companies’ products! Year 4 are becoming experts in how colours, images, exaggeration, commands, modality and catch phrases are skilfully used to influence consumers!

In alignment with English, we are experimenting with Stop Motion App on our iPads during Media Arts, with the goal of creating an advertisement for our own cereal boxes utilising many of the persuasive techniques mentioned above. Our Math’s focus has included exploring Odd & Even numbers, Data collection - representation and interpretation and Probability has provided the opportunity to investigate the chances of a range of events occurring.

HASS has given us the chance to get to know each other a little better, focusing on point of views, personal identity and what gives us a sense of belonging, our community and in turn rules and laws, what these are AND most importantly, why we have these. While Science (Materials) has allowed us to become inventors, having a lot of fun - planning for, constructing, and testing out a sturdy package for Grandmas cookie and reflect on its effectiveness... or not!

And of course, as you are aware we have been attending swimming lessons where student behaviour and participation has been outstanding – the non-swimmers who have joined in with other class groups here at school, have also been excellent representatives of their year level with great behaviour reported by the teachers supervising them.

In short, the Year 4 cohort have been extremely busy exhibiting their general awesomeness!

We are looking forward to seeing what the last few weeks of term bring our way and of course cannot wait to see what awesome learning experiences (and possible shenanigans) Term 2 brings our way!

Year 5

Year 5’s Fantastic Start to 2025!

This term, our Year 5 students have hit the ground running, embracing teamwork and enjoying exciting learning experiences across all subjects.

📖 English – Students have been expanding their reading and spelling skills through daily practice while also learning how to write persuasively. They explored the topic of animals in captivity, analysing how they are treated and using their research to develop strong arguments for their writing assessments.

➗ Mathematics – Our students have been sharpening their multiplication skills and number sense while also diving into the fascinating world of budgeting and chance.

💰 HASS (Humanities and Social Sciences) – Students explored the role of consumers and budgets, learning how businesses persuade customers to make purchases.

🏖️ HPE (Health and Physical Education) – A highlight this term was an engaging presentation from Surf Life Saving on water safety and beach hazards. Some lucky students even had the chance to hold the flags and wear the official uniforms!

🔬 Science – Hands-on experiments have made Science come alive! Students explored the states of matter and were amazed to see an egg magically fit into a bottle.

🌟 Art - Students have been exploring the seven elements of art to understand how artists combine these elements when making compositions and masterpieces.

🌟 Leadership & Community Involvement – Year 5 students have also been demonstrating their leadership skills, happily volunteering for meaningful roles such as Rubbish Rangers, ECDP helpers, Playground helpers, and Soccer Referees. It’s been an incredible start to the year, and we can’t wait for more learning, fun, and growth in the months ahead!

Miss Cooper, Mrs. Joseph, Mrs. Russell, and Mrs. Wilkie

Year 6

It's hard to believe we are almost to the end of Term 1!!! Not sure where the time has gone!

Term 1 has been busy, welcoming new staff and students to our cohort, swimming, a natural disaster and a bunch of teaching has certainly made the time fly!

So, what have we been doing?

In English, we have been busy learning about advertising. What makes an advertisement more appealing and persuasive? We are beginning to see what they have learnt with the students creating their own travel advertisement. Some are looking extremely appealing; I am very tempted to book a holiday to some of their destinations!!!!

In maths, we have been learning about properties of numbers, positive and negative integers, cartesian planes and how to tesselate shapes. We’ve also started number patterns and been consolidating our timetables.

In science, we are investigating reversible and irreversible changes to matter. Eg. Ice melts to water and then can freeze back to ice versus cracking an egg, heating it in a pan and cooling it to see if goes back in its shell. Mmmmmm reckon they know that that one isn’t reversible!

Joke time:

Why is it bad to trust atoms?

They make up everything!

Hahahahahaha!

In HASS we have been learning about Federation and the Australian Government, who knows, perhaps we have some future politicians among us!?

In media, the kids have also been polishing up their skills on iMovie, creating short clips and developing their knowledge on camera angles and types of shots. Watch out Spielberg!

Swimming has been a blast, we are very lucky to have spent time every week in the pool, building such important skills. Well done kids! I know that for some it is a challenge and they have faced it like champions, very proud!

So, until next term, take care and thanks for all your support!

From your year 6 teachers

Mrs Witte, Mrs Wilkie and Mrs Foster

Lost Property

As always, we have a mountain of lost property piling up at school. A lot of it is unnamed which makes it extremely hard to get it returned to the rightful owner. If your student has lost any items direct them to the lost property bins which are located under A Block Administration Building, or you're welcome to pop in for a look yourselves. Please check there if your children are missing any of their belongings. We also have some smaller special items (i.e. glasses, jewellery, trinkets from home) if your child has lost anything at all this year feel free to come into the office to see if it's found its way to us.

The Arts

Performing Arts in Term 1

Our Performing Arts program is off to a fantastic start this term!

  • Prep students are exploring singing and using actions to help tell a story through music.
  • Year 1-2 students are learning about the seasons, creating movement and music to express the changes throughout the year.
  • Year 3 students are diving into popular dance and music from history, choreographing their own routines inspired by disco, the hand jive, and the Charleston.
  • Year 4-6 students are engaging with the world of musical theatre, responding to the music, dance, and drama of Matilda the Musical.

It’s wonderful to see students expressing themselves through music, dance, and drama!

Sports Update

Back in Week 4, we had Zara, Madison, Bronte, and Kayla trial for the Beaudesert Zone Netball Team. All girls played extremely well and represented the school with pride. A special congratulations to Kayla who made the team. She has her Pacific District trial in the coming weeks. Good luck Kayla!

In Week 5, we had Zara compete in the Pacific District swimming trials. Zara swam brilliantly and made the Pacific District Team! Congratulations Zara! Unfortunately, the South Coast trial was cancelled due to Cyclone Alfred. However, we are extremely proud of you Zara.

LOTE - Japanese

Minnasan Konnichi wa!

It has been a busy start to 2025 in our Japanese lessons. I am super excited to be teaching Year 3 this year as well. Across Years 3 – 6, we are learning numbers, colours, days of the week and self-introductions with name, age, year level and where we live. We can even write the date in Japanese. There are many festivals in Japan. One in particular is called Setsubun which is held beginning February. Children throw good luck soy beans (fukumame) and chase the parents who are wearing oni masks. This Japanese tradition is believed to clear out all negativity and bring in good fortune and positivity into the house. See the attached photos. There are so many interesting differences between Japanese and Australian culture. Please ask your child about their Japanese lessons.

Next term, we are learning how to read and write the Japanese script called hiragana, along with learning about our pets and the different animals we can find in Japan.

As you can see from the photos, Pikachu has been on many adventures in classrooms so far this term. The class with the most Pikachu Points each week gets to look after our mascot Pikachu. Some ways we can get points is by following all school rules, quiet transitions between specialist lessons and excellent class participation. Congratulations to the classes this term – 6B, 5A, 3/4D, 4A and 3B. There are still 2 weeks to go so good luck to the classes in close running!

Design Technology

Technologies

This semester, our Technologies classes have been buzzing with creativity and problem-solving. In Semester 1, our Prep to Year 2 students have been exploring Design and Technologies, while our Year 3 to Year 6 students have been developing their skills in Digital Technologies.

Prep: Designing and Making Finger Puppets Our preps have been busy developing their design and construction skills by creating finger puppets. They have been learning how to safely use sticky tape, glue, and scissors while constructing puppets to go along with popular songs such as Five Little Ducks, Five Little Monkeys, and Five Speckled Frogs. These hands-on activities have helped them build fine motor skills and creativity while learning about how materials can be joined together.

Years 1 & 2: Exploring Materials and Their Uses Our Year 1 and 2 students have been investigating different materials and their properties. They are exploring how materials can be used for various purposes and how they can be combined to create movement. Through hands-on activities, students are developing problem-solving skills and learning to follow the design process.

Years 3-6: Digital Technologies in Action Our Year 3 to Year 6 students have been diving into the world of Digital Technologies. They have been focusing on various aspects of creating user stories and design criteria that they can solve with a digital game. Students have begun exploring the Scratch program for coding, developing loops, and implementing branching to enhance their game designs.

STEM

Over the past few weeks, the STEM students have been having so much fun with creating robots, crafting mini parachutes and constructing grabbers.

We are using SPIKE prime robots to learn to code and have followed 6 coding tutorials to gain an understanding of the basics for creating a robot.

After we had finished the SPIKE robots, we tried a challenge of crafting a stable, slow parachute for mini LEGO figures using the limited materials of; coloured tablecloths, string, tape and pipe cleaners. There was a short competition on whose parachute was the slowest.

The next week, we started working on making a LEGO grabber robot, which we will later use for another competitive challenge.

My name is Miss Caryn Eastman, I am the new strings teacher this year and I can be contacted on cmeas0@eq,edu.au. I am excited to say we have 19 amazing young people that are participating in the program so far this year with some spaces still available if any students wish to join. It is not too late to join. There are violins, cellos and a double bass available for any students wanting to loan a school instrument to participate in the program.

Our string ensemble practices before school at 8.10am in R Block on Monday mornings and we are looking forward to performing to the school the piece we are working on.

Instrumental Band lessons have resumed for 2025!

My name is Angus Campbell, and I am one of the new Instrumental Band teachers here at Beaudesert SS, along with Mr Simon Francis. Band lessons have resumed, with the kids enjoying the music-making process so far, many of whom picking up a new instrument this year! We still have plenty of spaces available if more students are keen to join the program. Instruments such as flutes, clarinets, saxophones, trumpets, trombones, and euphoniums, are all currently available for hire. If your child is in years 4-6, and is keen to try out an instrument, please do not hesitate to email either Mr Francis (sfran38@eq.edu.au) or myself (acamp486@eq.edu.au) for more details! Lessons are being held on Tuesday mornings by Mr Francis, and Tuesday afternoons by myself.

Whole band rehearsals will resume in term 2 for continuing band students in years 5-6, which will be held on a Tuesday afternoon at 2:15 in the R Block Meeting Room. We are looking forward to more music-making as the year progresses.
