A FEW WORDS FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Families

It is one of the great privileges I have as principal to be able to visit classrooms and see the wide range of learning experiences occurring at our school throughout the week. This week I have had the pleasure of seeing instructional routines in the reception and year one classrooms. Our youngest learners are in such great routine in their literacy program and the learning growth is simply incredible. I have also been in specialist classrooms to see the high-quality learning that is occurring in PE, Japanese and Performing Arts. Our students are very fortunate to experience a wide-range of learning experiences at Hallett Cove East Primary School.

Nurturing Positive Dispositions in Learners: A Focus on the South Australian Curriculum

The new South Australian Curriculum places a strong emphasis on developing key dispositions, as well as knowledge, to empower students to thrive in their learning environments and beyond. But what exactly are these dispositions, and why are they so important?

Dispositions are the attitudes, habits, and mindsets that influence how students approach learning and interact with others. Dispositions encompass curiosity, resilience, creativity, and collaboration. They are not only essential for academic success but also for personal growth and lifelong learning. By fostering curiosity through inquiry, encouraging resilience and persistence, promoting creativity and innovation, and supporting collaboration, our educators support students to become confident and capable when faced with life's challenges.

Dispositions are foundational to a student’s ability to adapt and succeed in various contexts. They prepare students not only for academic challenges but also for the complexities of life beyond the classroom. By nurturing dispositions, our teachers and SSOs can help students become confident, capable, and compassionate individuals.

At Hallett Cove East Primary School, we are supporting the development of dispositions by creating engaging learning experiences, embedding resilience in classroom learning, shaping positive learning environments, and providing opportunities for collaboration and reflection.

By prioritising these dispositions, we are aiming to equip students with the skills and mindsets they need to navigate the future with confidence. As we move through the school year, our staff will be working together to identify further ways to nurture dispositions in learning experiences so that every student at Hallett Cove East can thrive.

Year 6 Student Leaders

I have enjoyed working with our 50+ year 6 student leaders during the past week as they engaged in leadership forums. The student leaders have identified the leadership trademarks for their work in their leadership groups for 2025.

  • Trustworthy and Responsible
  • Caring and Encouraging
  • Fair and Respectful

The leaders also identified the following as being important dispositions that will drive their leadership work in 2025:

  • Determined
  • Inspiring
  • Inclusive
  • Resilient

As you can see, we have a thoughtful student leadership group who will no doubt have a big impact on their school this year!

NAPLAN – Year 3 & 5 Students

NAPLAN testing for year 3 and 5 students is now complete. I would like to commend students on their positive engagement and willingness to give things a go during the testing. NAPLAN results are one aspect of a child’s capabilities and it is important to keep in mind, that education is about developing those important lifelong dispositions described earlier in my article.

Governing Council

On Monday night we held our first meeting of the 2025 Governing Council. Our Governing Council will again be led by Amber Pellerin as Chair with support from Nikki Dopson as Deputy Chair and Yvie Eglington as Secretary.

I would also like to acknowledge the following parent volunteers who have taken on the role of leading a sub-committee:

  • Education: Nikki Dopson
  • Assets and Grounds: Alana Phipps
  • Canteen: Amber Pellerin
  • Fundraising and Finance: Amy Wadsworth
  • OSHC: Yvie Eglington
  • Sport: Emma Sewer
  • Uniform: Amy Wadsworth

Our school is really fortunate to have such fantastic volunteers who want to make a difference to our wonderful school. We always welcome new members to our school committees. You do not need to be a member of governing council to join, just be interested in making a difference in an area of the school’s operations. Please contact the front office for further details.

With regards

Matthew Chapman

A FEW WORDS FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL

Dear HCEPS school community,

Noarlunga 2 Portfolio Day

On Thursday Matthew and I were a part of a Noarlunga Portfolio Day. The day was filled with insightful sessions and collaborative workshops aimed at enhancing teaching strategies and fostering a culture of continuous improvement. Educators had the opportunity to showcase their innovative approaches and learn from each other's experiences, creating a rich experience of shared knowledge and expertise.

One of the highlights of the day was the focus on effective learners. Discussions centered around identifying the characteristics of effective learners and exploring strategies to nurture these traits in students. Educators engaged in dynamic conversations about fostering resilience, curiosity, and critical thinking skills, which are essential for students to thrive in an ever-changing world.

The Portfolio Day was not only a platform for professional development but also a celebration of the collaborative spirit that defines the Noarlunga 2 partnership. By coming together, educators reinforced their commitment to providing high-quality education and supporting each other in their shared mission to cultivate effective learners.

Intervention

We are excited at Hallett Cove East Primary School to be offering evidence based and informed intervention for literacy and numeracy across our site. This year students identified through data with gaps in their knowledge of phonics or fundamental mathematical concepts have been able to access targeted intervention.

These targeted programs are well underway, supporting students identified through data analysis. By focusing on individual needs, SSOs are implementing tailored strategies to enhance literacy and numeracy skills, ensuring that every student has the opportunity to succeed. This data-informed approach allows for precise intervention, making a meaningful difference in student outcomes.

Kind regards,

Robyn Physick

Deputy Principal

A FEW WORDS FROM OUR WELLBEING LEADER

What a busy few weeks it has been!

Our Year 6 student leaders recently volunteered their time to work with the Food on the Table charity, helping to make meals for those less fortunate in our community. Together, we made an incredible 940 sausage rolls! We were fortunate to partner with the Hallett Cove Lions Club, who kindly sponsored our excursion and helped make this opportunity possible for our student leaders. A big thank you also goes to our parent volunteers who assisted on the day — your support is always appreciated.

Throughout Week 8, we celebrated Harmony Week. Students engaged in a variety of activities within their classrooms, participated in lunchtime events run by our student leaders, and completed a buddy craft activity, which you may have seen displayed around the school. Harmony Week is all about celebrating inclusivity and diversity with the theme "Everyone Belongs."

We finished the week with our whole school picnic on Friday. It was wonderful to see so many members of our community come together. Special thanks to Helen in the canteen for organising the special lunch, Chatime, Little Blue Coffee Van, and the Soccer Committee for running the BBQ. We are so grateful to everyone who helped make the day such a success and created a fantastic community atmosphere.

Kind Regards,

Ellie Burford

Harmony Week 2025

A few words from the Autism Inclusion Teacher

Wednesday, April 2nd (Week 10) is World Autism Acceptance Day. This global event has been celebrated since 2007 to raise awareness, acceptance, and appreciation of autistic people.

At Hallett Cove East Primary School, we believe that celebrating our differences makes us stronger. We will be using World Autism Acceptance Day as an opportunity to come together and celebrate the unique contributions of autistic people by encouraging all staff and students to come to school wearing either rainbow colours, gold, or their own unique outfit. No gold coin donation will be required. During the day students will participate in activities which promote inclusion and deepen their understanding of neurodiversity.

By promoting understanding and acceptance, we can create a more inclusive and supportive environment for everyone.

Kind regards,

Renee Fisher
