From the Principal

Welcome back to Term 3

We have a full term of activities and learning planned for Term 3 starting with our Book Week & Education Week celebrations. I would like to extend a very warm welcome to all parents, carers and grandparents to join us for our Open Day on Friday 15th August. This is a wonderful opportunity to showcase our school and to celebrate your child's learning. A full schedule of events is available below.

Kindergarten Enrolments

Kindergarten enrolments for 2026 are now open. Please visit our school website to complete an online enrolment. Alternatively, you can visit the school office to collect an enrolment form. Families are encouraged to enrol early to allow students to participate in our Kindergarten Orientation program and to assist with planning of staffing for the new school year. If you know of any neighbours or friends with Kindergarten aged children, please encourage them to visit the school. I am always happy to meet with prospective families and show them around our beautiful school.

School Promotion

You may have noticed that we had some new signage installed around the school. This has given our school a more modern and professional look, as well as ensured signage is now correctly pointing visitors in the right direction. Thank you to our General Assistant Jim, for his hard work removing the old signage.

School Grounds

A number of projects around the school grounds were completed during the school holidays. The soft fall surface beneath the 3 to 6 play equipment has been repaired so that this area is once again safe for use. Concrete pathways and walkways have been pressure cleaned. We have had new carpet and vinyl installed in the office, library, staffroom and sick bay. Our school is looking fantastic!

Mobile Phone Policy & Smart Watches

A reminder to all families that mobile phones are banned for all primary students in NSW schools. The policy information is available here:

Digital devices in NSW schools – policy and procedures | NSW Government

At Telopea Public School, students with a mobile phone are required to hand it in at the office in the morning and collect it at the end of the day. Please contact the school office for the permission & information note if you wish your child to do this.

It has come to my attention that some students are wearing smart or internet enabled watches at school. This is strongly discouraged, in line with the Department's ban on mobile phones in primary school. If there is a special reason your child requires a smart watch, please contact the school office to arrange a meeting with me. Any student wearing a smart watch must have "school mode" enabled. Students are not permitted to message parents and carers using a smart watch during the day or to take photographs at school using this device. If a parent needs to be contacted during the school day, this will be through the school office or the class teacher. Thank you for your support in following the Department's digital policy for schools.

National Consistent Collection of Data

Dear parents, guardians and carers

Re: Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD)

Every year, all schools in Australia participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD). The NCCD process requires schools to identify information already available in the school about supports provided to students with disability. These relate to legislative requirements under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005, in line with the NCCD guidelines (2019).

Information provided about students to the Australian Government for the NCCD includes:

·         year of schooling

·         category of disability: physical, cognitive, sensory or social/emotional

·         level of adjustment provided: support provided within quality differentiated teaching practice, supplementary, substantial or extensive.

This information assists schools to:

·         formally recognise the supports and adjustments provided to students with disability in schools

·         consider how they can strengthen the support of students with disability in schools

·         develop shared practices so that they can review their learning programs in order to improve educational outcomes for students with disability.

The NCCD provides state and federal governments with the information they need to plan more broadly for the support of students with disability.

The NCCD will have no direct impact on your child and your child will not be involved in any testing process. The school will provide data to the Australian Government in such a way that no individual student will be able to be identified – the privacy and confidentiality of all students is ensured. All information is protected by privacy laws that regulate the collection, storage and disclosure of personal information. To find out more about these matters, please refer to the Australian Government’s Privacy Policy (https://www.education.gov.au/privacy-policy).

Further information about the NCCD can be found on the NCCD Portal (https://www.nccd.edu.au).

If you have any questions about the NCCD, please contact the school.

Kind regards

Mrs E. Dooley

Principal (Rel.)

Book Week Performance

Today we enjoyed a wonderful Book Week performance called Treasure Hunt presented by Perform Education. The students had the opportunity to explore the themes of sustainability & the environment through song & dance. Thank you to Mrs Ramsey, our teacher librarian, for organising this wonderful opportunity for the students. What a great way to launch our Book Week & Education Week program!

Student Attendance

This term we are conducting a whole school attendance challenge to try to improve our attendance rate from Term 2. The whole school will work together to improve. Classes are currently discussing their ideas for a great reward at the end of the term which will then be voted on at the next SRC meeting.

Congratulations to these classes with the best attendance in recent weeks:

Week 8 Term 2 - 1 Quokkas & 3/4 Wombats

Week 9 Term 2 - 3/4 Kookaburras

Week 10 Term 2 - Year 6 Emus

Week 1 Term 3 - 1/2 Bandicoots

Behaviour Expectations

K-2 Rouse Hill Excursion

Students in years K-2 visited Rouse Hill Museum for a wonderful and interactive day of learning about what school was like in the 1800s.

Hands-on activities included practising writing on slates, completing a science lesson, a sewing lesson and a drawing lesson as well as an outdoor physical education drill and maypole dancing in the yard, enabling students to make vivid comparisons between schooling, then and now.

Library News

Last term our students celebrated Naidoc Week in the library. We read many books by Aboriginal authors including, For 60,000 years by Marlee Silva and Rhys Paddick. This book is a deeply moving reflection on First Nations endurance, culture, and community that was enjoyed by all students.

Our Kindy students have also enjoyed reading together and learning how to borrow and return books. Thank you to all parents who remind their children to pack their library books in their school bag each week and return them. That way everyone can borrow from the wonderful selection of books that we have.

Thank you

Mrs Ramsey

What's Happening Year 5 Echidnas

In Year 5 Echidnas we have been working hard and getting our brains sweaty with the effort and energy being put into our learning!

In maths, we have explored Cartesian planes, and different strategies for multiplication and division, including the area model, paritioning and algorithms. This way we will be able to use the most efficient strategy to answer different types of questions.

In English we have been learning about argument and authority, and how to assess a text for its reliability – so far we have read about the first man on the Moon, commercial travel to the Moon and the possibility of extra-terrestrial life.

Our SportsPro program has been fun so far – we have had one lesson of netball and are looking forward to two more weeks before we move on to our next sport.

We are looking forward to the ‘Treasure Hunt’ performance for Book Week, and the Athletics Carnival!

Keep up the amazing learning Year 5 – you are doing a wonderful job!

School Uniform

A reminder that we encourage all students to wear full school uniform each day. Students in uniform have an improved sense of belonging to the school. Plese see the photo below for acceptable Winter uniform items of clothing.

Important Reminders

COLLECTING STUDENTS FROM SCHOOL

A reminder that if you have made arrangements for someone to collect your child/ren that is outside of your normal arrangements, please ensure that you have notified the office so we are aware and can let other staff members know in a timely manner.  This applies to leaving early and for the end of the day.

SAFETY

A reminder to all students and parents that entry to the School is via the Pedestrian gate on Chestnut Ave located near Block D. This is for everyone's safety. If you require disabled access there are two entry points into the school via the ramp into the school office and via the gate on the corner of Sturt and Manson Streets.

NOTES SENT HOME

On occasion important notes will be sent home. Please ensure you remember to check your child's bag each day.

CELEBRATIONS

Here at TPS we enjoy celebrating student’s birthdays. You are most welcome to bring in something to celebrate but we ask that individual store bought small bite size cupcakes or individually wrapped sweets are brought in to school as this makes it easier for the students to eat. A large cake makes it difficult to distribute to their classmates.

LOST PROPERTY

There are a number of items in the Lost Property box which do not have names on them. If your child is missing an item, please check this box which is located in the D Block breezeway.

CONTACT INFORMATION OR CIRCUMSTANCE CHANGE

Please ensure that your contact details are up to date. It is important that the School be able to contact you in case of your child being ill, a child not being collected from school or in case of emergency etc. If your family circumstances change, please also provide the school with any updated documentation.

You can notify the school of any changes or updates via written confirmation or complete the template form located in the office foyer.

MOBILE PHONES OR DEVICES

If you require your child to carry a mobile phone/device, you will be required to complete a permission note (please see the school office if you require this note). Student mobile phones/device are to be turned off and handed to the school office during school hours in the morning. Mobile phones/devices will be returned to the students at the end of each day.

Schools as a Community Centre

Dear Telopea PS and SaCC Communities,

Wishing our TPS and Telopea SaCC communities a warm welcome back for Term 3. I am looking forward to supporting our community in ways many and varied.

As usual BREAKFAST CLUB is delivered every Monday and Thursday morning 8:30-8:50am. Toast, cereal, baked beans, can spaghetti, chocolate and vanilla milky drinks and at time cheese toasties and fruit are available FREE FREE FREE!

Our BC is a lovely casual, social start to the school day where students can fill their bellies ready for concentrated learning.

SUPPORTED PLAYGROUP

This term I have organised for the Kids and Traffic team to teach us all about road and car safety. We'll enjoy a healthy eating/food preparation session with Isha from Sydney Produce Markets. And of course we'll continue to learn new skills focusing on all developmental areas...social/emotional, physical development (fine and gross motor), cognitive, speech and language. All in a fun play based learning environment.

Dundas Area Neighbourhood Center.

DANC are hosting a dental clinic. If you meet the eligibility criteria the service is FREE. Please see the attached information flyer. I urge you to act on the opportunity by booking an appointment as soon as possible.

PARENT PROGRAM TERM 3

A parent is a child's first teacher, arguably one of the most important jobs of your lifetime. Like any job constant upskilling helps us to navigate the path.

This term BRINGING UP GREAT KIDS will be delivered at Telopea SaCC. The four week program will cover topics such as:

  • Messages from the past of self
  • Giving and receiving messages
  • The messages behind your child’s behaviour.
  • The importance and benefits of self-care
  • Passing on positive messages to your child
Please feel free to contact me anytime....to enquire about programs, register for or request programs or to just have a chat.
