Principal Message

It's been a busy and productive term full of wonderful opportunities in and out of the classroom. Thank you to the entire team at Lismore South Public School who consistently go above and beyond. To wrap up a fabulous term our students have enjoyed a special rewards day with a surprise PBL disco for all students. Students who displayed consistent good behaviour throughout the term were also rewarded with VIP tickets to attend a special morning of activities.

Term 3 will resume for students on Tuesday 18th July. We look forward to seeing students back on this day. Please be aware that Lismore South Public School staff will participate in professional learning offsite on Monday 17th July. All staff will participate in a keynote session with Rachel Robertson with other school staff from across the Lismore and Richmond Valley networks.  The school office will not be open until 8.30am Tuesday 18th July. If you have any questions or enquiries you are most welcome to make contact with staff via the school email lismoresth-p.school@det.nsw.edu.au

Have a wonderful break everyone!

Kind regards,

Larissa Polak

OSHC Update

Please be advised that our Out of School Hours Care provider Northern Rivers Children Services, has provided notice that they will cease operations at our school from 17 July 2023, after the vacation care period. The department is aware of the importance of this service for our school and is working to confirm a long-term provider to take over this service as quickly as possible.

Interim solution

Northern Rivers Children Services have vacancies at their Lismore Heights Public School service for families requiring before and aftercare in the interim. To access the service, Sodhi Bus Service are offering transport between Lismore Heights Public School and Lismore South Public School in the morning and afternoons.

Parents interested in this service will need to organise a bus pass for their children by contacting Sodhi Bus Service on 02 6621 2279. There would be a small cost involved of $1/per trip, with further reductions for families with more than 1 child, or for those who would utilise the transport regularly. Please contact Sodhi Bus Service for further details.

Thank you for your patience during this time. Further information will be provided as soon as it becomes available. Should you have any questions in the meantime, you can contact the department at BASCreform@det.nsw.edu.au.

Consultation

This week Richmond River High Campus and The Rivers Secondary College staff and students participated in very constructive consultation workshops as part of planning for the rebuild of Richmond River High Campus. Workshops are planned for P&C representatives from local primary schools in Term 3.

A consultation survey is now online.  You can find it on the Richmond River High Campus project page on the School Infrastructure NSW website. We encourage all families to complete the survey and share your feedback and vision for the future of secondary education in Lismore, and the role of the Richmond River High Campus. The survey is open until 4 August. If you have questions, you can email FloodRecovery_RRHC@det.nsw.edu.au

Sentral Parents App

We have rolled out the Sentral for Parents app. All families will have received an email giving you instructions to register. The next step will be to load the app on your phone, log in and put in your child's specific access key. Please look out for an email from bounce@messaging.sentral.com.au titled Lismore South Public School.

The Sentral for Parents app will allow families greater access to school information in one location. It will be easy for parents to explain absences, see the school calendar, access permission notes and message your child's class teacher directly. Please feel free to visit the office if you have any difficulties loading the app.

NAIDOC Combined Schools Day

Special thank you to Albert Park Public School and their community for inviting us to share in their NAIDOC celebrations. Our students enjoyed participating in a variety of indigenous games and activities with staff and students. We were also treated to  traditional hāngī cooking, where meat and vegetables were cooked in a pit dug in the ground.

Please be advised we will hold our school NAIDOC celebrations with LSPS families on Friday 21st July. Please save the date!

Lismore Council Community NAIDOC Celebration

Lismore South Public School Aboriginal students were invited to the Lismore Council Community NAIDOC Celebration on Thursday 29th June at Lismore Racecourse. Our students were involved in activities; badge making, face painting, patting snakes, craft activities and were entertained with many performances. The students enjoyed watching the Rivers Secondary College Traditional Dance Group perform with some of our ex-students in the group. Aunty Thelma James welcomed everyone and Uncle Gilbert performed a Smoking Ceremony and explained the significance of the smoke paying tribute to Our Elders which is this year’s theme. The students and staff who attended had a great day and enjoyed all aspects of the day.

One Vision Productions

Lismore South Public School joined with One Vision at the start of Term 1 to begin writing and creating their hip hop video. They were fortunate that JK47 (Rapper) came to work with the Aboriginal students in Years 4-6 to culturally tell their story. They incorporated the recovery from the flood and moving forward.

They choregraphed and filmed their video around South Lismore, Minyon Falls and Lennox Head and our new demountable school. Uncle Gilbert went with them to Minyon Falls to tell stories, share language and cultural perspectives. The students proudly showcased their new video at a special assembly with parents and community members. The One Vision Team did an amazing job of producing the hip-hop video and our students were very proud of their achievement.

Lismore Lantern Parade

Congratulations to students who decorated a lantern at school and marched in the Lismore Lantern Parade. It was wonderful to see so many happy faces participate in the parade. We look forward to decorating lanterns again next year and being a part of our Lismore community celebrations. Special thanks to our families for attending and joining in the fun.

The Resilience Project Visit

We were privileged to spend the morning with Hugh van Cuylenburg, the co-founder of The Resilience Project and Olympian Sally Pearson. Both presenters shared invaluable insights and practical techniques for enhancing wellbeing, with a strong emphasis on gratitude, empathy, and mindfulness - GEM. It was truly inspiring to witness Sally and Hugh actively participating with our students, even joining them in a spirited race. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Coles for their generous sponsorship of The Resilience Project at Lismore South Public School in 2023.

PSSA Touch Football

Lismore South Public School’s senior boys touch football team recently played a match against Lismore Heights Public School at Hepburn Park. Lismore Heights scored the first try early, however after that our boys switched on in defence applying plenty of pressure. Once our midfielders, Tahne and Cruz, got the ball they began attacking relentlessly, guiding the boys on the field with confidence and skill. This resulted in the team scoring some exciting tries. The links Orion and Rylan ran hard in attack and defence creating opportunities for the wingers Max, Beau and Braxton to join the action. Team spirit, communication, discipline and fair play was displayed by the whole team for the entire match. Lismore Heights never gave up however Lismore South won the game 9 tries to 2. Well done to Tahne, Cruz, Orion, Rylan, Max, Beau and Braxton, a real team effort. Our next match will be a home game against Kyogle Public School early in term 3.

Athletics Practice

Over the last few weeks, students have had the opportunity to attend athletics practice at Riverview Park. During these sessions the students have worked on their skills for each of the events that will be held at our Athletics Carnival on Thursday July 20th. Parents and carers are welcome to attend our Athletics Carnival.

Preschool News

A warm welcome to Miss Sonya Murphy, our new preschool teacher replacing Miss Clemesha for the remainder of the year. Miss Murphy is an experienced Early Childhood educator who is excited to be joining the team. She has met the children this week and will formally meet the preschool families on day one next term.

We wish Mrs Clemesha all the very best as she begins maternity leave. We look forward to hearing about the arrival of bub early in August.

This week we have been celebrating NAIDOC week. To support our learning we read "KooKoo Kookaburra" written by Gregg Dreise and discussed how "Kindness is like a boomerang - if you throw it often, it comes back often..." We then decorated boomerangs. We have also created Torres Strait Islander flags, enjoyed Australian animal small world play, and explored indigenous symbols and patterns.
