Term 2 Week 6 Newsletter

Principals report

Dear Parents and Carers,

It’s been another busy start to Term 2, with a flurry of sporting events, special activities, and our ongoing assessment schedule as we prepare for Semester One reports.

Our dedicated staff have also been engaged in professional learning, focusing on implementing the Department of Education’s Explicit Teaching with the Daily Review methodology in Mathematics and progressing with curriculum reforms across all key learning areas.

Athletics Carnival

A heartfelt thank you to all who braved the chilly weather to support this year’s Athletics Carnival. While we traditionally hold this event in Term 1, scheduling constraints led to a Term 2 carnival this year. Looking ahead, we aim to return to our usual Term 1 schedule.

Semester One Reports

In line with the NSW Department of Education’s updated reporting guidelines, this semester’s reports will adopt a more parent-friendly format, to provide clearer insight into your child’s progress . We welcome your feedback on these changes as part of our continuous improvement process.

Parent-Teacher-Student Interviews

This semester, we are introducing Parent-Teacher-Student (three-way) interviews in Week 10, following the distribution of reports in Week 9. We believe this approach will enhance communication and provide a more comprehensive understanding of your child’s learning journey.Interview booking will be sent home via school bytes on 23/6/25, ready for Interview Week starting on the 30/6/25.

NSW Public Schools Student Survey

Our school is participating in the NSW Public Schools Student Survey this term. This survey gathers valuable feedback on students' experiences and wellbeing at school. Participation is voluntary, and an opt-out permission form is enclosed with this newsletter. If you prefer your child not to participate, please return the completed form to the school by the 18/6/25.

Puffing Billies Program

We are pleased to announce that our Puffing Billies program will continue in Terms 3 and 4. Despite funding reductions for our provider “Connect,” they have ensured the program's operation for this year. Please share this information with prospective enrolments; further details will be provided in due course.

Warm regards,

Vicki Gillmore

Principal

NSW Public Schools Student Survey

In Term 2, we are offering our students the opportunity to participate in the NSW Public Schools Student Survey. The survey gives students the chance to share their thoughts and feelings about life at school, including questions about their engagement, learning experiences and wellbeing at school.

Hearing directly from our students will help us understand what’s working well and where improvements can be made to our school. The survey is confidential, takes around 10 to 15 minutes to complete, and will be conducted online during school hours.

Participation is voluntary. If you prefer your child not to participate, please complete the opt-out consent form, which will be sent home, and return it to the school. Further information about the survey is available at https://education.nsw.gov.au/npss

Around the School

Reconciliation Week

This week, we came together as a school community to honour Reconciliation Week, a time to reflect, learn and grow together in the spirit of healing and unity.

Reconciliation Week reminds us of the importance of acknowledging the histories, cultures and contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and walking together towards a more respectful and inclusive future.

We were privileged to welcome Uncle Bob Sutor and Dale to our school. The day began with classes sharing their own Acknowledgement of Country, followed by a beautiful Welcome to Country that included traditional song and an incredible display of didgeridoo animal sounds, bringing culture and storytelling to life. Our students then took part in a range of engaging cultural activities, including drawing, storytelling and music, where they explored the richness and diversity of First Nations traditions.

It was a truly meaningful experience for all, and we thank Uncle Bob and Dale (from One Mob) for generously sharing their knowledge and culture.

Littlescribe

As a prelude to Sorry Day and Reconciliation Week, our Zig Zag students had the opportunity to participate in the Littlescribe's “Deadly Writing Festival.”

This event connects Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander storytellers directly with classrooms across the country. Through engaging stories and meaningful conversations, students are encouraged to explore their creativity while deepening their understanding and appreciation of First Nations cultures.

The Deadly Writing Festival plays an important role in fostering respect, empathy, and reconciliation. We’re proud of our students for their thoughtful participation and reflections as we move into this important week of learning and acknowledgment.

Well Done Leaders

Peer Support Leaders

We have started our lessons of our Peer Support Program, and our Year 6 leaders did a fantastic job leading their groups through fun and meaningful activities focused on the theme of Friendship.

We’re proud of their leadership and the positive example they’re setting for younger students.

Well done, leaders!

Well Done Cooper

Well Done Cooper at representing Western area and Zig Zag Public School  at the State Carnival. We are very proud of your achievements.

Similtaneous Story time

We joined over two million children around Australia for National Simultaneous Storytime.

Mrs Gillmore read ‘Truck Cat’ to the whole school. A beautiful story about cats and humans, immigration and identity; and homes lost and found.

District Cross Country

Well done to all our amazing students who participated in the District Cross Country at Lake Wallace yesterday!

Your effort, determination, and sportsmanship made us proud.

A big thank you to Wallerawang Public School for hosting such a well-organised event — and how great was it to have the sun shining!

Congratulations to Elijah, Ryan, and Tanner, who have qualified to compete at the Western Cross Country in Orange.

Athletics

The weather was chilly but our students brought the heat at the Zig Zag Athletics Carnival!

The track was full of determination, friendship and cheering.

We’re so proud of every student - they all ran with heart!

From soaring jumps to powerful throws, our students gave it their all in the field events.

There was focus, fun and plenty of impressive efforts

A huge well done to everyone who gave it a go and cheered each other on!

Allergy Awarenesss Week

As part of Allergy Awareness Week, our students and staff took the opportunity to engage in important learning around allergies, anaphylaxis, and how to keep our school community safe. Creating a safe and supportive environment for all students is a priority, and awareness is key. #AllergyAwarenessWeek #SafeSchools #InclusionMatters #AnaphylaxisAwareness
