On the 6th of June I went to St Patrick’s Cathedral for a ceremony for altar servers to be accepted into the Guild of St Stephen and receive a blessed medal. This is an honour given to altar servers in year 7 or above, who have shown a commitment to altar serving over a number of years. St Patrick’s is a very large and beautiful cathedral, and on this night, it was filled with around 200 altar servers from various parishes and their families. During the ceremony, we were asked to stand and hold our medals out for Archbishop Peter to bless with holy water. We then proceeded up to the Archbishop for him to formally present us with our blessed medals. The cross-shaped medal has the inscription “We serve the Lord” and is supported on a red rope. I researched why they use a thin red rope and found it was a reminder of the martyrdom of Saint Stephen. Saint Stephen was not a saint I personally knew anything about prior to this special ceremony. He was the very first martyr ever recorded. Known as the Patron Saint of altar servers, he served his faith with fearlessness and bravery. He lived in the early days of the church just after Jesus had risen. Saint Stephen was a friend of the apostles and while he was spreading the word he worked miracles and great signs. This angered the enemies of the Christians. Saint Stephen was accused of wanting to bring an end to all the ancient customs of the Jews. Stephen denied this and he was condemned to death by stoning. St Stephen had great faith in Jesus and as the stones came crashing down, he shouted, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit!”. Stephen showed us that his love and courage can work on us too. He showed us what real serving is about, and that is why he is the saint for altar serving. I strongly believe it is very special to be an altar server. You not only assist the Priest during mass, but you are also serving those in your parish whilst growing your faith. The lead up to being accepted into the Guild of St. Stephen has been a very spiritual journey for me. I will continue altar serving, and I would encourage any person, no matter your gender, to altar serve. I am honoured and very thankful to Father Alex for his support and nomination to join the Guild, which recognises my ongoing commitment.
