A message from Clare

Good Afternoon Families,

Last Friday, we gathered together to celebrate the Feast of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. As always it was lovely seeing so many children participate in the mass, especially our Mini Vinnies who were presented with their badges. Your sense of compassion and commitment to being of service to others is exactly how Jesus lived his life. You are truly walking in his footsteps. Thank you to all families who entered into the spirit of Colour for a Cause on Wednesday. We collected boxes and boxes and bag upon bag of non-perishable goods. We just know there will be people in our local community who will appreciate the generosity of our community.

The P&F Association is getting excited for the Trivia night on Saturday night. Costumes are being prepared, the hall will reflect the 80’s theme and the games will be set up for a great night of whispering (the answers to the team), of nervous twitching (for the mobile that can’t be used) and pure fun in being together to share food, drinks and the hilarity that goes so well with trivia. I hope everyone has one of the best nights of their 2024 social year. It’s so good to hear that there are 30 parishioners joining in too. Look out for the photos in the next edition of the newsletter.

The Sacrament of Reconciliation is just around the corner for many of our Year Three children. Families who have a child celebrating the sacrament have been sent the details via email, to book a time for their child to attend the church when Fr Dean will administer the sacrament. If you have any queries, you can forward them to our Leader of Faith and Mission,Nina Grieve, at: ngrieve@slblackburnsth.catholic.edu.au  Please say a prayer for these children.

Term Three is set to be one very exciting term. We have the Senior School camp in Week Three and the Middle School camp in Week Four. To help parents prepare their child for this, we will be holding two Camp Information sessions next Wednesday 19th June. We are offering a 9 am - 9.30 am session and another one that afternoon from 2.50 pm to 3.20 pm. Please check the communication sent via Audiri yesterday to all families in these year levels. We are getting ready for FUN, FUN, FUN.

A gentle reminder that Winter has well and truly arrived. Please make sure your child/ren is wearing their winter uniform and has a jumper (and possibly a jacket) at school each day. Even after rainfall, we try to get the children outside to release some energy but sometimes, it can be bitterly cold.

PLEASE take care to be vigilant when it comes to your child’s on-line activity and gaming. It can be very difficult for our young children’s brains to absorb and rationalise games and content that is beyond their short years of experience. Sometimes children’s exposure to action-packed violent games can manifest itself in their behaviour and responses in the classroom and in the playground. I suggest if you want more information and support or are simply curious, visit the e-safety Commissioner at https://www.esafety.gov.au/parents. You will discover a lot of information around age appropriate gaming, guidelines for on-line activity and helpful approaches to take to establish and maintain a safe space for your child in a digital and cyber world.

I am very pleased to let all families know that Fr Alex Chow has been appointed to St Luke the Evangelist and St Timothy's Parishes as parish administrator. I know when he arrives in July, we will welcome him warmly and help him feel part of our very special community here at St Luke's.

Finally, I just have to say- and l know some might say l’m becoming a little political but how good is it to see the mighty flying Hawks showing a little more promise of late? I can sense that things are changing for the boys. I just hope it gains momentum.

Have a very happy, warm weekend. For our trivia buffs… may the best team win!

Gardening News

We have planted some seeds at 'Gardening Club'.  We are growing radish and we also planted some beans.  Each week we get rid of all of the weeds to help our plants grow.  We look after our plants.  We love to see how much they have grown each week.

Our Year 5/6 students were asked this week to write about what they like about Smiling Mind, how it helps them and what they learn.  Please read below some of their wise and insightful responses.

Pauline Answerth

“I like Smiling Mind because it calms me down and helps me relax. It’s helpful because I can focus on my work more. We learn how to meditate and stay calm.”

“Smiling Mind has benefitted my daily life because when I feel overcome with emotions, particularly being anxious and worried for big moments in life, I am able to calm myself down and focus on the positive things.”

“I find Smiling Mind helpful to me when I am agitated or nervous. I tend to feel that Smiling Mind helps me to be more relaxed and present. I feel less ‘heavy’ after the Smiling Mind activity. I feel more happy. I like to do Smiling Mind because they help me focus more on my day.”

“Smiling Mind is helpful because it teaches you about life skills such as recognising emotions and self compassion.”

“Smiling Mind is a good way to wind down and to take a step back when doing meditation. We learn how to recognise our emotions and how to understand them.”

‘I like Smiling Mind because it makes me happier. It makes me think about my emotions more.”

“In Smiling Mind we learn how to be aware of our emotions and our surroundings. I like Smiling Mind because it is a time to be quiet, and that is peaceful.”

Smiling Mind is helpful because it calms me down and refocuses me when I have too much excitement or energy in me.”

Weather Watchers - Junior

In the Junior classes, we have been learning about changes in our weather.  Every student was given the opportunity to be a meteorologist and present the weather for the day to their class each morning.  Here are some of our discoveries.

I learnt that there are many different types of clouds. Cumulonimbus is my favourites because it is the biggest cloud. Maxwell

I learnt that clouds have names.  I learnt that stratus clouds are low in the sky. Aubrey

I learnt that lightning occurs when hot air pushes up and cold air pushes down. Harry

I learned that cumulonimbus clouds cand be puffy and fluffy. Sometimes they are white and sometimes they are dark grey. Heze

I learnt that when lightning strikes it finds the nearest, tallest object. Emiliana

I learnt that rainbows can appear in the night time. They are called ‘moonbows’. Amalia

I learnt that thunder and lightning are the same thing. This is because light travels faster than the speed of sound. Alexandra

I learnt that fog is called stratus cloud. Stratus clouds can also be found in the sky. Noah

I learnt that cumulonimbus clouds can produce thunder and lightning. Louis

I learnt that cumulus clouds usually mean nice weather. Poppy

I learnt that the word precipitation is a fancy word for rain. Reuben

I learnt that when cirrus cloud curve, that means the wind has changed direction. Thomas

I learnt that thunder is the sound that  lightning makes. They are the same thing. Samantha

I discovered that is is impossible to predict the weather. My favourite type of weather is rain. Lachlan

I discovered that weather cannot be controlled by us. I learnt that rain can be light or heavy. Ryan

I like that weather can be cold or hot. My favourite weather is summer weather because when we have sun, it doesn’t rain and we can be warm. Bella

I like rainbows because they are colourful. The have 7 colours and we sometimes see them in summer. William

I liked how I could tell what the weather would be like. We looked at the BOM and we looked at what the temperature would be every morning. Noah

I learnt that when lightning strikes it finds the first tallest, nearest thing and it comes down from the clouds in the sky. Lightning is ‘cool’ because I like the way it looks. Emiliana

The weather can change, one minute it's cloudy, the next minute it’s sunny. Sometimes the weather is very reactive. Lightning goes first, and then a few seconds later thunder comes. I feel positive about the weather because I enjoy thunderstorms.  Ayden

I learnt that lightning only ever comes down, it never goes up. I liked learning about lightning and thunder, it's very interesting. Evelyn

Safety when riding scooters and bikes to and from school

Children are vulnerable to head injuries and should wear a standard approved bicycle helmet whenever they ride a bike or scooter.

In Victoria, children under the age of 12 may ride on footpaths. They are required to give way to pedestrians and to wheel their bicycles over pedestrian and children’s crossings.

Children aged 12 years or older are required by law to ride on the road.

For the safety of our children riding to and from school,
ensure that they wear an approved bicycle helmet.

Term 2 and 3 WINTER UNIFORMS:

Winter uniform -  As the months get cooler, please make sure your child has his/her school jumper EVERY day. Rain jackets should not be worn in place of a school jumper and are for outside use only.

CHILDREN ARRIVING AFTER THE BELL OR LEAVING EARLY:

As part of our wellbeing care of children at St Luke's, every class engages in a morning routine at 8.50 am.  This quiet, calm time allows children to gather together in a circle, to greet each other by name, to pray and/or enter into some Christian meditation and get ready for the day.  Please make sure you allow enough time to get your child to school BEFORE 8.50 am.

If children arrive after the gate and student entry doors are locked, parents/carers are required to walk their child/ren to the school office and sign them in on the VPass iPad.

If leaving early (before the end of the day), parents/carers are required to sign their child/ren out on the VPASS iPad.

FOOD ALLERGIES:

Allergic reactions to food… can be harmful to our children. For that reason we ask parents to think carefully about what they are packing in their child’s lunch boxes. Occasionally, something might slip through and once aware, we take precautions to ensure the safety of every child. As stated in the Family Handbook 2024:

We are an EGG and NUT free school due to the allergies of children within our community.  We ask that parents respect this request and the potential harm this could do to children if brought to school.

Thank you for your care and attention to this.
