From the Principal

Dear Jamberoo Public School Community,

District Cross Country

Thank you to the wonderful students who are today participating so enthusiastically at the Tongarra Cross Country Carnival. I’m sure the behaviour of all the students will be outstanding, and their effort, in such a gruelling event, will inspire others. Thank you also to the many parents and families who are supporting the competitors today. A big thank you also to Mrs Green and Miss Alpen for supervising the Jamberoo runners today.

I look forward to informing the school community of the achievements of our students in next Thursday’s newsletter.

School Security

Throughout last term, the school experienced numerous incidents where individuals unlawfully entered the school grounds. This resulted in unnecessary damage to school property.

Where to next?

The school met with School Security representatives at the end of Term One to propose implementing improved security measures at Jamberoo Public School. They include:

· Installing black security fencing in current school perimeter weak spots: behind church, at the back of the school oval, the forest, behind Wombarra and Birrahlee.

· Buzzer/intercom system to be installed at gate located near admin building. Security camera to be installed to observe gate located near the Uniform Shop.

· Alarms to be installed in all permanent buildings/classrooms. Currently only the library, admin building and hall are alarmed.

Any confirmed future works will be communicated to the Jamberoo school community.

Reports

Teachers are in the process of analysing student assessment data in preparation to commence the writing of student reports. Reports will be sent home to families on the last day of school, Friday 5th July. There will be no three-way conferences this term, as they were conducted in Term One.

If you wish to speak to your child’s teacher about their progress, please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s teacher(s) to make an appointment.

PSSA Soccer

Tomorrow, the boys’ soccer team will take on Windang Public School in the state-wide PSSA Knockout. Miss Alpen will be escorting the team on the day. I’m sure the boys will enjoy themselves and will represent the school to the best of their ability.

Walk Safely to School Day

The annual Walk Safely to School Day will be held next Friday 19th May. All children from Jamberoo Public School, along with their parents/carers, are encouraged to walk and commute safely to school on this day.

The Objectives of National Walk Safely to School Day are:

· To encourage parents and carers to walk to school with primary age children.

· To promote the health benefits of walking and create regular walking habits.

· To help children develop vital road crossing skills.

· To reduce car dependency and traffic congestion.

· To reduce the level of air pollution created by motor vehicles.

We would appreciate if as many Jamberoo families as possible could support this important cause next Friday.

Outside School Hours Care (OSHC)

The school is pleased to announce that Peak Sports and Learning has been selected to run the OSHC service at Jamberoo Public School. We expect that the provider will commence operations towards the second half of Term 2, 2023 depending on service approval.

Tell Them From Me (TTFM) Survey

Over the next few weeks, students in Years 4, 5 & 6 will participate in the Tell Them From Me Survey. The survey is designed by the Department of Education and is completed by thousands of students across the state. The data that is formulated by the survey is used to provide schools with vital information for future planning, strategic directions and to gain an insight into student learning and engagement.

Regards,

Mr Chris Speirs

Last Week - Principal's Award

Well done to Miss Lulu Tonta who at last Friday’s assembly received a Principal’s Award. Lulu was nominated because she reaches out with kindness and caring to others, in particular the younger students in the school. Keep on being the kind and caring human being you are Lulu.

Wombarra’s Wonderful Writers

I was fortunate enough this week to spend time with students from Wombarra who showcased their writing samples. I was absolutely blown with the students’ knowledge of full stops and capital letters and their ability to use their learnt phonological knowledge to break down sounds/letters in the words they had written.

I very much look forward to showcasing, in future newsletters, the writing efforts of Wombarra students and the learning achievements of many students from other classes as well.

Music Night

I am excited to announce that we will be holding our annual Music Night this term! Music Night is an evening event in the school hall where students can sign up, individually or in groups, to perform for the audience. Examples include: singing, dancing, jokes, a short play or playing a musical instrument. Students can talk to me if they have a different idea, to get it approved. Performances should be limited to 3 minutes or the length of a song. Short plays may be slightly longer.

Any songs students are singing and dancing to will need to be primary school appropriate. Parents and carers, please check that the lyrics are OK. Also, dancing costumes and dance movements need to be age-appropriate to a primary school audience. Any backing tracks that your child is singing or dancing to will need to be emailed to Ms Alpen (see below) or sent in with your child on a USB and given directly to her.

The timeline for music night is as follows:

Weeks 2-6 – students can sign up for Music Night with me when they see me out on playground duty. I will have my clipboard with me to write your name down. Students may be in up to two performances if they would like. Please email Ms Alpen at maddison.alpen@det.nsw.edu.au with your music. You could download music from iTunes or Spotify if you have an account. Ms Alpen has also generously offered that if you email her a Youtube link she can convert it into a mp3 file for your child’s backing track. Alternatively, you can send in your child’s music using a USB. Please make sure your child hands it directly to her and that it has your child’s name on it.

Obviously, some students will not need music backing tracks, depending on their act.

Week 6 -Thursday 1st June. Your music is due to Ms Alpen by this date. Parents will then not need to bring music for their child on the night as it will already be organised.

Week 7 -- Thursday 8th June. We will have a closed rehearsal at lunch time in my classroom for all performers. Students will just do the first minute or so of their act on this day in front of me and the other performers. If students are not organised with their act on this day, I will advise them that we will save their performance for next year. In other words, students must be prepared for this closed rehearsal in order to participate in Music Night.

Week 8 -- Thursday 15th June. Music Night will be held at 6 pm in the school hall. All are welcome! It usually goes for about 2 hours. Students are asked to bring their best manners and be a respectful audience. They will be expected to remain in their seats and not leave the hall. Parents and carers should be in attendance to supervise them.

Looking forward to it!

Mrs McCormack

KidsFest 2023 Overview

The 15th KidsFest Shellharbour to be held May 21-27, 2023, features free events for children 0-12 years, their families and carers held at a range of venues throughout the Shellharbour Local Government Area. The 2023 festival theme is ‘Planting seeds of diversity and delight’, linking in with 2023 being the United Nations International Year of Millet. Held during Families Week, KidsFest Shellharbour partners local businesses with community organisations across Shellharbour City to encourage social inclusion and an enhanced sense of belonging for children 0-12 years, their families and carers. Events are focused on providing accessible opportunities for children with disabilities, their families and carers. KidsFest works with community and tourism-based initiatives to provide a great public forum for their programs.

KidsFest engages many businesses, government and non-government organisations and volunteers to deliver the following event outcomes:• Hosting a vibrant, free, week-long festival for children aged 0-12 and their families and carers that promotes Shellharbour LGA and builds child-friendly communities.• Providing access to free activities with a focus on creativity, culture and active engagement and introducing tourists/ families and carers to spaces/ venues and activities on offer in the area.• Linking parents, families and caregivers with local service organisations to support the health and development needs of children

KidsFest is spread out over a whole week and events are held in different places all over the city to highlight the range of activities and spaces on offer in the area. The philosophy of KidsFest is for the community to contribute to strong families and for all participating hosts to demonstrate how they contribute to a Child Friendly Shellharbour. Our KidsFest program (see attached) is about giving children, their families and carers opportunities to engage in activities in the community, accessible all year round. During the week thousands of children and their families and carers will immerse themselves in a range of over a hundred ‘hands on’ activities that promote diversity, confidence, play, creativity, healthy living, safety, literacy, discovery, nature, imagination, acceptance, school readiness, art, music, circus & community.
