TERM 3, WEEK 3 - 2023

LEADERSHIP CORNER

It has been a great start to semester 2 with classes settled and focused on learning.  We have a busy term ahead with lots of exciting events happening - Book Week, Excursions, Sports Day, School Disco and many more!

Optional Interviews

For families wishing to discuss any report information or their child’s progress, optional Interviews are available for you to book directly with class teachers. Keeping you in touch with your child’s learning progress is important to us and this is one of the many optional ways families have to discuss your child’s learning achievement and individual progress.

2024 School Structure

64 Reception placements for Term 1, 2024 start have been offered to our round 1 in zone and sibling families. Once round 1 offers are confirmed, we will seek to offer places to families expressing interest from outside the school zone. These offers will go out to families in line with Department timelines on September 1 2023.

For families with children due to start Reception in the Term 3 2024 intake, offers will be sent once we have more information from the Department.

For families with siblings who are yet to complete a Registration of Interest for their children, please do so urgently by contacting dl.1246.enrol@schools.sa.edu.au

Staffing Update

We welcomed Tamara Denton to the Year 2 team to replace Sarah Cumming in T2 who has gone on Maternity leave, and Renee Hamilton who is our new Business Manager, taking over from Cheryl Jaeschke who has retired for the Department.

Feedback, Concerns, Complaints and Grievance Policy and Procedures

At times there may be a need to provide us with feedback or to meet to address a concern or complaint. The Governing Council reviewed site policy to ensure there is a clear and transparent process that is respectful and confidential and ensures solutions can be worked through, wherever possible. This policy is available on our school website and families are strongly encouraged to meet with staff or make a time to speak with a member of leadership to work through any problems that can arise from time-to-time.  You can access our policy via our website: https://www.westlakes.sa.edu.au/Policies

Uniform

We have seen an influx of non school uniform items being worn to school recently, and this is a reminder that all students are to abide by the school uniform policy.

  • No hoodies or jackets with hoods- this includes SAPSASA and SMOSH hoodies (raincoats are an exception - only worn to and from school)
  • No logos on socks - plain white, navy or black socks are to be worn
  • No large necklaces, earrings or bracelets
  • Hair longer than shoulder length is to be tied back off the face - for hygiene and safety reasons

Please visit our schools website for the full policy

Playgrounds & After School Supervision

With the new addition of the Ninja Course to our playground, we are seeing a lot of children using this after school hours, with no parental supervision.

The school yard is only supervised from 3pm to 3:15pm.

We are introducing the following safety rules for families to keep all children safe:

  • All school aged children are to be actively supervised on the Adventure playground and the Ninja Course by a parent or caregiver from 3:00pm - 3:15pm - we do not encourage parents to allow pre school aged children to play on this equipment.
  • Once the bell rings at 3:15pm, ALL children are to remove themselves from the playground. The yard duty teacher will ask all children to exit the equipment.
  • OSHC have the use of the playground from 3:15pm, and do not supervise any children who are not attending OSHC.
  • The school gates will be locked at 3:20pm

We thank you for your cooperation with this matter.

PARENT ENGAGEMENT SURVEY

2023 PARENT SURVEY

You’re invited to complete the 2023 annual parent survey, which is now open.

In the week beginning Monday 31 July you should have received an email or SMS from the Parent Survey Team with a unique link to participate in the survey.

If you didn’t receive an email or SMS with your unique survey link, contact  and include our school’s name in your email.

The survey takes less than 10 minutes and will help us understand:

  • what we’re doing well
  • where we can improve
  • what’s important to you.

It has been coordinated centrally so that added administration workload isn't placed on our school.

Your answers won't identify you or your child. Only collated feedback will be provided to our school.

Information collected will inform school improvement planning and activities at the school.

The survey closes midnight Sunday 27 August.

For more information visit Department for Education website

RESOURCE CENTRE NEWS

BOOK WEEK 2023

Each year, schools in Australia celebrate Children’s Book Week.  The aim is to encourage a love of reading and promote books of excellence for young people.  Shortlists of recently published books are released and on the Friday immediately before Book Week, the Book of the Year and winners in various categories are announced.

This year, Book Week will be celebrated in Week 5, commencing on Monday 21st August, with daily lunchtime activities in the library and a Book Week Parade in our new courtyard on Friday, 25th August, with more details to come.

The theme is, “Read, Grow, Inspire”.  We are encouraging students to dress up as their favourite character from a book that they love reading, a book that has helped them grow or a book that has inspired them.  We are encouraging students to use their dreams and imaginations to create/design their costumes.

At school, the shortlisted books are on display in the Resource Centre and teachers will be reading them to classes during the term.

PREMIER'S READING CHALLENGE 2023

A reminder that the Premier’s Reading Challenge closes on Friday, 8th September.  All completed Reading Records must be handed in to the Resource Centre by this date.

The Premier’s Reading Challenge is about reading and sharing books at home.  If your child is not an independent reader yet, you can read books together and record them on the Reading Record sheet.  If you have lost your sheet, please collect a replacement from the Resource Centre.  We are also able to print a borrowing history for students if needed.

This year, the Premier’s Reading Challenge turns 20!  To commemorate this milestone, an additional Challenge is running where students can challenge themselves to read 20 books instead of the usual 12.  The extra 8 books form is available from the library.  Successful students will receive a bonus certificate.  Please note, this challenge is for 2023 only!
