Important Diary Dates

From the Principal

Hi all,

Welcome back to Term 4. Term 4 is my favourite term – the sun is shining, the students’ brains are full of learning, the Upper Primary kids get all dressed up fancy to graduate and we all look forward to Santa coming and lazing and playing in the sun!

A few things of note are:

CLASSES FOR 2024

At this time we are looking at the classes we will be able to run and considering class sizes, make-up and teacher allocation. Allocating children to classes is a complex and detailed process involving collecting feedback from staff, parents/carers and students. The size of our classes is determined by the DfE guidelines with a recommended maximum of 26 students in R-2 classes and 30 students in 3-7 classes. Every year we try to keep our numbers as small as possible to support learning and teacher/student wellbeing.

In constructing classes the following factors are considered:

· gender balance

· social, emotional and academic needs

· friendship and social dynamics

· behavioural factors

· individual personality characteristics

· specific learning needs

As part of this process, we invite parents/carers to put in writing any issues, concerns or requests that you believe should be taken into consideration and that may impact on the educational outcomes of your child/children.

These requests generally will pertain to social-emotional factors and not directed towards specific teachers in particular.

Additionally, if you know that you are not returning to NPS next year could you also please let us know to assist with our planning.

Please email me at vicky.ireland21@schools.sa.edu.au by Friday 8th November.

SCHOOL ACCOUNTS

We still have some outstanding accounts which need to be paid please by the end of the year. If you have not completed payment of your 2024 M&S fees or any other outstanding debt you will have received a letter from us asking for payment or asking you to apply for school card.

Can you please respond to this letter.

The school relies on parent contributions to support the teaching and learning provided to your child. School card is paid directly to the school so it is of great benefit to us. If you think that you are eligible for you to follow through on the process. If you are unclear about the process contact Chelsea Marshall, Finance Officer, and she can help you with it.

Staffing

I can announce that Courtney Adams will not be returning to our school. Courtney has won the position of Principal at Wasleys PS where she has been since the beginning of this year. Having been at NPS for 14 years Courtney has played a huge part in the lives of students and staff at the school and we will of course miss her presence greatly. However, she moves on in her career and we wish her all the best.

Paving

The paving is done! If you enter through the bowling carpark you will perhaps have seen that the courdoned off has been completed. I was told by the tradespeople that the trees are now breathing more easily with the concrete lifted and the area looks lovely with new pavers and bark chips. This area will be an ‘out of bounds’ area -we do not want people loitering/standing around in the bark chips due to the danger that big old gum trees still pose in terms of dropping branches. The tree is not a high risk tree but we always err on the side of caution when it comes to children’s safety. We will add some foliage and colour to the area in due course.

Quiz Night

The quiz night was a roaring success! We raised $1900 after expenses. We will be using the money to contribute to the upgrade of the Junior Primary play area – watch this space, or rather watch that space! We are toying with the idea of doing the Quiz Night annually as it is great fun and is something we can offer parents and friends in our community and fundraise at the same time! Hopefully you will join us next year!!

Term 4 Activities

We have a very busy term ahead. As per our Camps and Excursions policy we have several excursions happening. The Year 5 and 6 students are heading to Adelaide to look at the marketing and promotion of the city as part of their HASS. As well as this they have several end of year/school events including a Christmas Market, Splash Day and graduation.

The 2 – 4 students are also heading to Adelaide to visit the Museum and Botanical Gardens, which will be fantastic! And the R – 3 students have their first camp of their lives! They have an evening of activities here at school on Thursday November 14th and, for those who wish to, a sleepover here at school too. Yikes! Thankfully it is a Student Free Day the following day on Friday 15th November.

Christmas Picnic

This year there is no Christmas Concert. In light of this Governing Council are holding a Christmas Picnic for families. This will take place on Thursday 5th December. The intention is that families will come along and enjoy a picnic on the oval and Governing Council will wrap up the year that was 2024! More details on this from Governing Council will follow via notes home and our digital media.

Teachers Day

A huge thank you to the SSO staff, in particular Erin for the fantastic video, gift and lunch that they surprised us with on Wednesday. If you haven’t seen the great video have a look on the Nuriootpa Primary school Facebook page – its so good! Here is a photo of my gift…

Volunteering at Nuri PS

Over the past few years it has been a little difficult to have volunteers in the school. We are hoping to change that at Nuri PS and provide opportunity for parents to become more involved in the school and help support us to ensure we are giving kids every opportunity to learn. As a parent, it is important to be involved in your child's education and make a positive impact on their school experience. One way to do this is by volunteering at school. Not only does this allow you to support the school community, but it also offers many benefits for both you and your child.

When parent volunteers participate in school activities, it creates a greater sense of inclusion and togetherness. Everyone has a chance to get involved with what is happening at school. Parent volunteers can be especially valuable when teachers organise group work in subjects such as literacy and numeracy, assisting with art lessons and outdoor activities and excursions.  Parents may also assist with roles such as changing reading books and reading with children.

When you volunteer at school, you become part of a team dedicated to enhancing the learning experience for all students, contribute to the academic environment and can also help with the quality of extracurricular activities. This also shows your child that school and related activities have a high value. Whether you assist teachers in the classroom or support extracurricular activities, your efforts contribute greatly towards creating a welcoming atmosphere for everyone. We value the skills and expertise of parents and welcome the additional support in the school. By sharing your time and skills with students, you can help foster their personal growth and support them to achieve their goals.

Remember that volunteering at school is not just about your parental relationship with your children alone. In fact, you might not even interact with your own kids during the day-to-day activities (kids often prefer that you don’t, although they value you being there and showing interest in their learning). The goal of becoming a parent volunteer is to improve things for everyone and contribute positively to the educational experience at Nuriootpa PS.

For the safety of working with children all volunteers require a:

·         Current working with children check (WWCC) Updated every 5 years.

·         Completed a Fundamentals course in Risks of Harm, Abuse and Neglect – Education and Care (RRHAN- EC). Updated every 3 years.

I will be holding a volunteers workshop on Monday 11th November from 10am – 12pm to complete the above requirements.  We have limited spaces for this workshop, so please contact the school via email if interested. dl.0318.info@schools.sa.edu.au

Wellbeing at NPS

Gardening Produce

Hi there everyone,

A major component of our Wellbeing Plan was the establishment of our school garden. The agency the students have demonstrated in working on this space has been heartwarming and we are pleased that we have our first haul of produce.

I will be meeting with the SEG Gardening and Fundraising committees next week with a general plan to harvest and use our produce for cooking and selling. I'm looking forward to see what they come up with.

This entire project has been a brilliant vehicle for building the culture of our school and giving children a sense of ownership over the grounds.

Thank you,

Mr. Rostig

Parent Volunteers

If you are able, Nuriootpa Primary welcomes any parents and carers who would like  to volunteer.  Parent and Carer Volunteers are a valued support base for our school, assisting staff to provide  a range of high quality opportunities to promote the learning, wellbeing and growth of students.

Some ways you can be involved may include:

·       Listen to Students read

·       Assistance on excursions and Camps

If you are interested in supporting the school in either of these,  please contact the Front Office and speak to Karen Brook on 8562 1040 to book in for an information night to be held early next term.

Please note: All volunteers need  a  WWCC (Working with Children Check) and RHAN (Responding to Harm and Neglect).  The School will support interested people in gaining these.
