TERM 2 WEEK 7 - 12 JUNE 2024

Principal

I hope that everyone enjoyed a lovely long weekend break. As we head into the winter months, please remember to label all jumpers and items of clothing. During winter both the previous and new uniform will be accepted. This means that students are able to wear either grey or black pants. Black pants are available for sale from the uniform shop. Alternatively, any grey or black pants without logos are acceptable. Please also ensure that students wear closed in shoes to school each day. Shoes that do not cover the entire foot can result in injuries during the break times and sporting activities. Crocs are not an appropriate footwear choice for school. Semester 1 reports will be sent home during Week 10 of this term. We have changed the format of our reports to enable us to effectively report on your child's progress using the new curriculum. Some of the changes include:

  • Students in years 1-6 will receive an overall grade for each subject using the A-E scale.
  • For all content descriptors there will be an indicator for your child's progress showing that they are either working towards the outcome (WT), achieving the outcome (A) or working beyond the outcome (WB)
  • There will be a comment for each Key Learning Area (KLA)
  • The general comment will provide an overall statement about your child's learning and participation in activities.
Parent teacher interviews will be held during week 10. This year we will be booking interview times through the School Bytes parent portal. Information will be sent out shortly.

Our school will perform at the South Coast Dance Festival on Monday June 24. Thank you to Mrs Stokes for coordinating our dance group and making this opportunity possible. I can't wait to watch the performance.

Last week we held our school final for the Multicultural Public Speaking Competition. Congratulations to Amelia D, Riley P, Zarlee D and Elsie H who will represent our school at the District Final held on Thursday June 27 in our school hall.

We have had a number of students attending school wearing a watch that can also be used as a mobile phone. Please be advised that students are not allowed to use mobile phones at school, including during recess and lunch. This includes watches with the capacity to be used as a phone. We understand that some students may require a phone or watch to contact parents during travel times before and after school. Students who choose to bring a device must have these turned off and in their bag at all times while they are on school grounds.

Have a wonderful week.

Sarah Davis

Aboriginal Education

On Friday 24 May, 45 of our Stage 3 students and staff attended the annual Eurobodalla Sorry Day Bridge Walk at Batemans Bay.

Sorry Day remembers and acknowledges Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who were forcibly removed as children from their families and communities, which we now know as ‘The Stolen Generations’. It is also about strength and healing.

The event commenced with a smoking ceremony on the north side of the Batemans Bay bridge before we proceeded to make our way across the bridge with the many other people in attendance. The walk was followed by traditional dancing, which some of our students participated in, speeches and a BBQ.

A big thanks to the organisers of the event, and Marshalls Bus company’s support with transport which allowed us to attend and come together with other schools and community to acknowledge, reflect and be a part of this day of healing.

Our community dhurga sessions are still going strong with Mrs Boyenga on every Wednesday from 2.15 pm to 3.00 pm in the library.

National NAIDOC Week is held in the first week of July each year to celebrate and recognise the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This year’s theme is “Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud”. The theme celebrates the ‘unyielding spirit of our communities and invites all to stand in solidarity, amplifying the voices that have long been silenced’.

MPS’ NAIDOC Week will be held in Term 3 Week 3. Further information on our school’s week of activities will be provided at the beginning of next term.

Sports Update

MPS Cross Country Awards

At the assembly held on Tuesday 21 May Moruya Public School presented merit ribbons to the winners from our school Cross Country Carnival. The following students were our finalists in this event:

Eurobodalla PSSA District Cross Country

On Friday 17 May MPS had representatives run in the Eurobodalla PSSA Cross Country Carnival at Willinga Park in Bawley Point. Our students all gave great effort in running the course with different terrain at a fantastic new venue. All athletes enjoyed the event and MPS has two students progressing to the Regional Cross Country level of competition.

Well done to Jessie H and Sebastian J on moving on in the competition.

Thank you to the spectators who made their way to the carnival to support our students.

PSSA Representative Sport

Over the last couple of weeks MPS students have been very busy representing our school in three sports: Soccer (Football), Softball and Netball.

Our games were all in a short space of time due to rescheduling from the recent wet weather. Our teams made us proud in their efforts in each game and the way they demonstrated fairness and sportsmanship.

Thank you to the families of our players for making the trip to the games and watching us as we tested our sporting skills.

MPS versus Sunshine Bay in Boys and Girls Softball

Two weeks ago MPS sent two teams to play Sunshine Bay in Boys and Girls Softball. We were lucky with the weather, having been washed out with the rain in recent weeks.

Both teams showed off skill they have been developing in our Softball skill clinics at lunchtimes and in school Sport.

The Boys team was successful in scoring 6 runs against Sunshine Bay and were active in batting and making outs. All players tested their skills in a challenging game and were successful in making hits and base running. James, Jamal and Ryan were our pitching rotation to give SBPS opportunities to hit in partnership with Jack who worked tirelessly as the catcher for the game. Jacob amazed us as he learned how to steal bases against the opposition.

The Girls team were also effective in their game, scoring 11 runs against Sunshine Bay with Jessie B taking a memorable catch and Jessie H doing amazing base running. All players enjoyed trying new positions, with Johanna and Cleo undertaking pitching for the first time and Maddison working very hard as our catcher for the whole game.

Both teams were not successful in moving to the next round of competition, but all players had a great time, and our younger students are looking forward to competing again next year.

Two finalists will progress to the district level of the public speaking competition to be held here at Moruya Public School on Thursday 27 June 2024.
