Term 3

Principal’s Address

We are officially at the end of the Term 3. Please enjoy reflecting on the term we have had. It is lovely to see how many fantastic activities our school community has provided and our students have been involved in.

I would like to acknowledge the dedication and hard work of all Newman SHS staff who have undertaken the task of educating and inspiring students to become productive citizens and lifelong learners.

Take the holiday time to relax and be ready for an exciting Term 4.

I would like to acknowledge and thank the following staff who are leaving our school community to at the end of this term:

·       We would like to say thank you to Ms Bree Andersen who will be         finishing up with us this week. It was fantastic to have her back in our school as an English teacher.

·       We are also farewelling Mrs Stephanie Hriskin at the end of this week. We are very grateful for the amazing job she has done over the last two terms. She stepped into the school in a professional manner and has gone above and beyond to support her colleagues and work hard at improving outcomes for our students. Thank you, Mrs Hriskin.

·       Finally, we thank Mr Ryan Parisi who was with us for the last term – he joined our school and assisted in providing relief.

I wish everyone a very happy, safe and relaxing holiday and look forward to working with you all in Term 4.

Kind regards

Maths Camp - Karratha

Karratha Maths Camp

On Friday, 24 July, Mrs Bourgy and Mr Fletcher set off with twelve enthusiastic students on a road trip to Karratha for the annual Maths Camp.

Three teams (67)53 Algebros (John Riddett, Saxon Smaill, Max Bastick, Rudra Patel), Best Newman Team (Dante Tomran, Beth Smith, Promise Chibwe, Lennox Williams), and Sonics (Jake Riddett, Roman Mills, Curtis Humphreys, Nissi Chmaboko)  went head-to-head with students from Karratha in a full day of fast-paced challenges.

From the high-energy problem-solving of Maths Mania and the adrenaline rush of The Amazing Race to hands-on STEM contests like Sink It or Ship It and the inventive chaos of Rube Goldberg Mayhem, our students brought their best. All three Newman teams performed strongly, with the (67)53 Algebros earning an impressive second place overall  and taking home brand-new scientific calculators as prizes.

The day buzzed with teamwork, laughter, and brainpower. After lunch, a lively stop at the Karratha Shopping Centre gave our students the chance to show off their sharp style and great taste. From start to finish, the trip shone as a brilliant example of our Newman values: Respect, Responsibility, Care, and Compassion in action.

Science Week

Science Week – Exploring the Wonders of the World Around Us

This year’s Science Week was an exciting celebration of curiosity, creativity, and discovery. Students across year levels could engage in hands-on experiments, thought-provoking challenges, and eye-opening discussions that brought science to life beyond the classroom.

Science Week was more than just experiments and presentations. It was a celebration of wonder, a chance to be curious, and a reminder that every great discovery starts with a question.

Science Week Activities

Career Conversations

Following our Year 10 Parent Information Evening on Tuesday 12 August, families stayed on for the Department of Education’s Career Conversations event. This free, statewide initiative connects parents, students, and industry experts to explore post-school pathways and opportunities.

Attendees heard about where to find reliable, up-to-date career information, options for university and training, pathways for young people with disabilities, and insights into the current and future job market.

The evening finished with a panel discussion featuring Chae Salbie (BHP), Peta Baer (Newman Neighbourhood Centre), and Sylvana Caranna (Shire of East Pilbara), who shared valuable tips on what employers are looking for, emerging job opportunities, and advice for young people preparing to enter the workforce.

It was an informative and inspiring session, giving families practical tools and real-world perspectives to help guide future career decisions.

Year 10 Parent Information Night

On Tuesday 12 August, Year 10 students and their families attended our annual Year 11 Information Evening in the NSHS Library. The event gave families an overview of senior schooling, WACE requirements, pathway options, course counselling, and VET opportunities.

Following the presentation, families toured the school to visit learning areas, meet Heads of Learning Areas and Program Coordinators, and explore the Trade Training Centre. The evening finished with refreshments and informal conversations with staff.

It was a fantastic turnout, with families appreciating the chance to see the breadth of opportunities available to students as they prepare for Year 11 and 12.

Careers Expo

This year’s Careers Expo was a fantastic success, with students attending in year groups throughout the day. They had the opportunity to explore a wide range of industry areas, ask questions, and gather valuable information about future career pathways.

The event was engaging and interactive, with students getting hands-on experience using simulators and even getting an up-close look at the impressive crane brought in by Freo Cranes. Prizes were won, fun was had, and most importantly, students walked away inspired and informed about the opportunities ahead.

A huge thank you goes out to all the businesses and organisations who attended, and in particular to the Chamber of Commerce and Industry for coordinating and bringing it all together. Your support helps open doors for our young people and connect them with real-world possibilities.

Spare Parts Puppet Theatre

We were thrilled to welcome the incredibly talented team from Spare Parts Puppet Theatre for captivating performances of their touring show, Pillow Fight.

Students from Years 7 to 10 had the opportunity to experience the magic of puppetry through a heartwarming and humorous story exploring sibling rivalry. Following the performances, our Year 9 and 10 Drama students participated in an inspiring puppetry and theatre workshop.

This hands-on session gave them the chance to stretch their creative muscles and deepen their understanding of performance art.

Resources Technology Showcase 2025! We’re incredibly proud to share that students Surya and Roman, along with Chris Hickman & Ash Bhatti, are representing our school at this exciting event held at the Perth Convention Centre. The event was a fantastic opportunity to build leadership, enhance communication skills, and gain real industry insights - and they did just that! The team even had the honour of meeting Premier Roger Cook and Hon Sabine Winton MLA, WA's Minister for Education - and were featured on 7 News! What an unforgettable experience! We’re so proud of Surya & Roman for representing our school with such confidence, curiosity, and professionalism.

YohFest

This year’s YohFest was a fantastic celebration of youth creativity, passion, and performance. Our talented students took to the stage with powerful messages and original ideas, using drama, dance, and visual arts to explore important social themes in meaningful ways.

From bold storytelling and expressive choreography to thought-provoking artwork, our school's entries reflected both artistic skill and a deep understanding of the world around us. The energy, teamwork, and confidence on display were truly inspiring.

YohFest isn’t just about performing—it's about using the arts as a voice for change, and our students rose to the challenge brilliantly. A huge congratulations to everyone involved for their commitment, courage, and creativity!
