SUTTON PUBLIC SCHOOL

July 28th - Week 2

From the Principal

Week 3 will be an exciting week with some great school and community events taking place.  On Tuesday night, Stage 3 students who are part of Wakakirri will be live on stage at The Canberra Theatre.  Stage 2 students, parents and teachers will be star gazing at Stromolo on Wednesday and Thursday night.  On Friday, thanks to the super support of some Sutton parents, we will all enjoy the opportunity to order lunch from the canteen.  What a week!  Keep checking our calendar for dates.

NAPLAN reports are being sent home to students in year 3 and 5.  All classes are settled into the term and working well as they begin their new units of work.  We look forward to a really successful term.

Wakakirri Performance

On Tuesday 1 August, our 24 cast members from Stage 3 will head to The Canberra Theatre to perform "Connections" our 2023 Wakakirri story dance.  We wish our wonderful students all the very best.  The hard work has been done over the last three months.  Now it is your time to shine.

We wish to give our heartfelt thanks and congratulations to Vicki Harvey.  Vicki has been the driving force behind our clever and creative performance piece - from visualising the item to designing the choreography and staging -  as well as teaching the story dance on a weekly basis and at weekend rehearsals.  So much goes into bringing these activities to life.  Thank you so much Vicki.

We also acknowledge and thank the creative Mr Lucre for his clever props and theatrical experience. You have brought so much to our performance.

So good luck to everyone and as they say at Wakakirri - Chookas!

NAPLAN 2023

Parents and carers of students in years 3 and 5 will receive student reports today.

From 2023, students’ NAPLAN results will be reported against 4 proficiency standards - replacing the previous 10-bands and national minimum standard.

There are 4 proficiency levels for each assessment area at each year level:

  • Exceeding: the student’s result exceeds expectations at the time of testing.
  • Strong: the student’s result meets challenging but reasonable expectations at the time of testing.
  • Developing: the student’s result indicates that they are working towards expectations at the time of testing.
  • Needs additional support: the student’s result indicates that they are not achieving the learning outcomes expected at the time of testing. They are likely to need additional support to progress satisfactorily.
Reading a NAPLAN individual student report

The Australian Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) has information to help with reading student NAPLAN reports including a short video and brochure for parents and carers.

For more information about NAPLAN results and individual student reports, including the brochure for parents and carers in other languages, visit the ACARA NAPLAN results and reports website or go to https://education.nsw.gov.au/teaching-and-learning/student-assessment/naplan-online/reports-and-results

Queen Nellie Club & NAIDOC

Queen Nellie Club - a quiet calm space at lunchtimes

We encourage students to share any ideas they might have for our day to day activities at school. Student voice is represented through SRC but suggestions can also be made individually.

Two students from Stage 1 suggested a quiet calm space for children to meet at lunchtime. Aunty Matilda House suggested to name the meeting place after Nellie Hamilton. Nellie Hamilton was a strong Ngunnawal leader so well known in the Queanbeayan community that she was often called ‘Queen’.

The Queen Nellie Club in the library is open for all students to meet on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday lunchtimes to share quiet, calm time together. Children might choose activities such as crochet, or drawing as well as reading. All students are welcome.

NAIDOC and Soar into Stem

Our school is part of a collaborative art project linked to the Soar into STEM workshops for Years 5/6 in Week 7. As part of our NAIDOC celebrations each student is decorating a feather which will form part of a Mulleun – Wedge Tailed Eagle artwork. The Wedge tailed eagle is a totem for Ngunnawal people. We will send our decorated feathers to be added to the collaborative project. Later in the term, the completed Eagle will be exhibited around local schools. More details of how you can see the finished Eagle will be given nearer the date.

Please remember not to bring any nuts or nut-containing foods to school.  We also do not share food (such as birthday cakes, sweets or during daily meals) to avoid accidental exposure to allergens. Thank you for your support and understanding. Let's continue to work together to create a safe environment for all students.

Bungendore High School Buzz

At the very end of term 2, we hosted Year 5 and Year 6 students from our partner primary schools, including Sutton Public School, and other prospective Bungendore High students from a variety of primary schools. Students spent the morning gaining a taste of life in high school with mini lessons such as sewing skills, exploring gravity through paper helicopters, baking biscuits, experimenting with genre, and drama games.

In the afternoon, students worked to complete the CAM toys (toys with moving parts) that they had previously designed and commenced building as part of the middle school initiative.

High school has such a different feel, schedule and lesson structure to primary school, and these transition days really help incoming students to alleviate their fears in the face of this exciting (but daunting) change. We look forward to welcoming prospective Bungendore High School students again for the Term 3 Transition Day at the end of term.
