TOKSAVE - Term 3 Week 4 2023

Lihir International School and School to Mine Campus

Principal: Mr Gregory Neville

Deputy Principal LIS: Ms Catherine Langusch

Deputy Principal STM: Mr Kevin Collins

From the Principal

Dear parents and carers,

National Exams

The year 8 and 10 National examinations are rapidly approaching. The school has been working hard to ensure that all students are well prepared. We ask that parents and carers partner with the school in encouraging all students to stay focused. Screen time and use of mobile phones is one distraction in the leadup to the National Exams. I challenge all parents to severely limit or remove use of screen time and mobiles during the weeks leading up to the exams.

Attendance

Attendance at school is very important. Children need to be at school on time every day to succeed in their learning. We have seen some unnecessary absenteeism and lateness, particularly in the high school. If a child is absent, parents / carers need to email the class teacher or send a note on return to the school.

Repentance Day.

Saturday the 26th August is gazetted as a public holiday. We will confirm if there is to be a holiday on the Friday or Monday in lieu of this.

Independence Day.

This year the school will celebrate Independence Day on the last day of school for term 3 – September 14. There will be some special activities to celebrate the day.  Please see the program below.

School Council.

This term’s School Council meeting will be on Thursday, the 17th August.

Farewell to Mr Sarufa

This week we farewell Mr Ronnie Sarufa who is moving to a new role in Newcrest as a trainee in the Emergency Response Team. Mr Sarufa has worked at LIS since the start of last year and has been responsible for leading the Music program and also preparing the school band for our school production last term. He has also helped out in the primary classes in a variety of ways, particularly with reading. We wish Mr Sarufa every success in his new role.

Book Week - Click on a book, pick up a book and READ!

This week, we celebrated Book Week at LIS! It was great to see children excited to dress up and share about their favourite character in the Kindy-year 4 Book Week Parade. Thank you to the parents who put creative effort into their costumes and for attending the parade. Thank you also to Ms Andar and the Kindy-year 4 staff for coordinating the parade. Book Week is a time to highlight the importance of reading and I hope all parents were able to enjoy reading a special book with their child.

NAPLAN Reports

Year 3, 5 and 7 students participated in the Australian NAPLAN tests for Literacy and Numeracy in term 1. We are awaiting the arrival of student reports for these tests and will send them home once received.

Absences

A reminder that if your child is absent, please email your child's teacher or text/phone Mrs Romaso-Daimol in the office.

Kind regards,

Ms Cathy Langusch

Goodbye and good luck Mr Sarufa. We wish you all the best in your new role!

VIP Champion!

From the Deputy Principal (STM)

Our second week of the Work Ready Program has gone well with the trainees' confidence building each day. Thanks to Kara Nelson for coming from HR Learning and Talent this week to put our trainees through their mandatory inductions. Next week we look forward to welcoming some guest speakers.

We are continuing preparation for our DWU Lecturers to come to site to deliver the Bachelor of Primary Education Upgrade and the Master of Educational Leadership lectures during the September school holidays. This week I met with Lihir Secondary School Teachers to confirm their enrolment in the MEDL Program, and they are all very excited for the program to commence.

National exam remedial lessons at STMC are continuing for Grade 8 and 10 students every Saturday this term as per last term’s timetable. These lessons are of great importance as the students prepare for their exams at the start of term 4.

Our FODE students continue to work hard as they prepare for the end of year exams.

Regards,

Mr Kevin Collins
