Dear JPS Families, 

I hope you all had a lovely King's Birthday long weekend and managed to enjoy the beautiful weather. From the stories I heard around the playground about parties and camping trips, it sounded like you did!

There is plenty to celebrate this week. Congratulations to our finalists in both the Premier's Spelling Bee and the Multicultural Public Speaking Competition — we are very proud of your efforts and the way many of you pushed yourselves out of your comfort zones to participate. We also have the honour of hosting the Multicultural Public Speaking Competition Zone Final this Wednesday, and we wish our finalists the very best of luck on the day. A big thank you to Mrs Behl-Shanks for organising the event and for all the work she has put into preparing our students.

Best of luck also to the Jamberoo Debating Team, who take on both Albion Park and Balarang next week!

This is our last week of Athletics Training with Ian Hatfield — thank you to Ian for a great program and to Mrs Kunkler for organising. Thanks also to our General Assistant, Mr Chad, who has cleaned and tidied the long jump pit ready for next week's sessions. 

Finally, the staff and I have recently completed a review of our behaviour and wellbeing processes, which I shared with the P&C at our Week 8 meeting for feedback. I will be communicating the changes we are making to the wider community soon, and will be organising a parent information session for any families who would like to hear more about how we support student behaviour and wellbeing at our school. Stay tuned!

A big thank you to all the JPS students who got up to perform and entertain us at Music Night last week! There are so many talented students in our school! It was a great night! We also appreciated all those who came to watch the show and support their friends. I'd like to mention especially the braved kindies, Scarlette and Nia, who were up on the stage! Amazing. 

Music Night was also an opportunity to farewell Mr Reed, who has headed off to his permanent position at Bowral Public School. He played us out with a rendition of Dani California, with Finn Stacey on guitar. Thanks for everything, Mr Reed!

From learning to tell the time to developing their athletic skills and exploring celebrations around the world, Kindergarten has been engaged in a variety of exciting learning experiences this term.

In P.E, we have started our athletics program with Mr Hatfield. Students have enjoyed participating in shot put, sprinting and jumping activities while developing their coordination, confidence and fundamental movement skills. Next week, students will have the opportunity to practise long jump. They are all looking forward to showcasing their skills at the upcoming Athletics Carnival.

In Mathematics, we have been learning to tell the time (o'clock) on an analogue clock. Students made their own clocks and practised identifying and reading different o'clock times.In History, we have been exploring celebrations and learning about the different ways people and cultures celebrate special events. Students have enjoyed sharing their own experiences and learning about traditions from around the world.

In English, we have been learning about adjectives (describing words) and how they can make our writing more interesting and detailed. Students have been practising adding adjectives to their sentences to create more vivid descriptions.

Walabi students have been working hard! We have loved our athletics coaching with Coach Ian Hatfield.In English, we have been reading The Boy Who Tried to Shrink His Name. The book contains examples of figurative language, as well as visual clues and images for how he feels overwhelmed by his name sometimes.

In mathematics, we have been working on composing and decomposing 2D shapes, as well as continuing with our use of the split and jump strategies for addition and subtraction. Students are still practising their Nian puppet shows and we hope to be able to present them to each other soon.

Crazy hair and crazy sock day was a huge hit! See the photos below for some of the beautiful creations by students. On the same day, Walabi students had a special class reward for our Term 1 kindness challenge. We had hot chips in Reid Park and a play on the oval and on the playground there. We then went on our historical walking tour around town, discussing life for early Wadi Wadi people, the importance of the Minnamurra River and life of the cedar-getters. We discussed Michael Hyam's original land grant and the land he gave for a racetrack and three churches. We looked at Jamberoo Pub for clues as to what its original name was and when it was built. We also looked at the timeline outside Fredo's IGA and I showed students where my parents feature on the timeline! We looked at the butcher shop and discussed how Jamberoo was once on the main road between Sydney and Nowra, until a road and railway crossed the Minnamurra River at Kiama/Minnamurra. You can see the butcher shop was once the location of the local council chambers. Jamberoo only joined the Kiama local government area in the 1950s. The students were excellent, never once complaining about all the walking we did!

Donut Day Fundraiser

The P&C would like to thank all the families who supported our very first Donut Day fundraiser. We received fantastic feedback, saw plenty of happy faces, and it was a fun way to finish the week. A huge thank you to Sarah Thatcher, Julie Downes, Sam Cochrane, and Kate from the front office for collecting, packaging, and distributing more than 400 donuts. It was a massive effort, and we couldn't have done it without their help.

We would also like to thank Stacey-Lee Douch for the wonderful suggestion to hold a Donut Day fundraiser.

Bunnings BBQ 

The P&C will be running a Bunnings BBQ on Saturday 18 July.

We would love your support! If you can spare an hour or two to help on the day, we would greatly appreciate it.

We will also be seeking donations of drinks and other supplies. Please keep an eye out over the coming days for the volunteer roster and donation list 🌭🥤

A friendly reminder that the Premier's Reading Challenge 2026 is now underway! We have already had many students reach their reading goal.

Challenge Opens: Monday 23 February 2026

Challenge Closes: Friday 18 September 2026

Students in Kindergarten to Year 2 complete the challenge as part of their classroom and library learning, with books being recorded at school.

Students in Years 3 to 6 can continue adding books to their reading record at home through their Premier's Reading Challenge student portal, as well as during class and library time at school. Reading 20 books in total.

We encourage all students to keep reading regularly and recording their books to work towards completing the challenge. Reading for enjoyment helps build vocabulary, imagination, knowledge, and a lifelong love of books.
