Principal's Message

Dear Community

This week it was a privilege to watch and listen to the twelve year 4-6 students who presented at the school’s Speak Up final. We were so immensely proud of the efforts each of you had put in and you were all amazing. The audience was completely engaged the whole time and we learned so much from each and every one of you. These things are a testament to your impressive public speaking abilities. Our finalists were

  • Year 4: Max P., Lucca
  • Year 5: Hudson, Leo, Leah, Tate, Flora, Zoe
  • Year 6: Harry, Loh Relm, Steve, Pema

The judging panel, consisting of Mrs Van Maanen, Mrs Daniels and MLA Stuart Aubrey, had an extremely challenging task of choosing 3 finalists to progress to the regional final, which will be held early next term. Whilst we would have been happy for any of the 12 to represent us at the next level, the 3 selected students were

  • Harry, who spoke about blue whales
  • Leo, who spoke about colour blindness, and
  • Leah, who spoke about frogs.

Cross Country

Weather permitting, our cross-country carnival will go ahead next Monday, 19 June. The details below are for if the weather is fine. If there are intermittent showers throughout the day, we may start early and run students throughout the day where possible. If this occurs, or the weather is too inclement to go ahead, then we will postpone until week 10. If this is the case, a post will be put on Audiri as soon as the decision is made, so stay tuned.

Timings

PP- Year 3 races will start from around 11:20 AM AT THE SCHOOL and run in the following order:

  • PP (200m) 2 races - 16 girls, 15 boys
  • Year 1 (500m) 2 races - 16 girls, 19 boys
  • Year 2 (500m) 2 races – 13 girls, 17 boys
  • Year 3 (800m) 2 races - 14 girls, 22 boys

Year 4-6 races will start at 2pm and be at Deanmore Reserve

  • Year 4 (800m) 2 races – 16 girls, 18 boys
  • Year 5 (1200m) 2 races – 14 girls, 17 boys
  • Year 6 (1600m) 1 race – 16 students mixed

The students will run around the top section of Deanmore only, avoiding the waterlogged middle section. The finish line will be near the cricket nets. Different year levels will be running between 1.5 and 3 laps of the track depending on their distance. The starting line will move to adjust distances.

School Board

On Wednesday, the School Board met for a very productive meeting.

  • We re-endorsed the Homework Policy that was reviewed just before 2022 COVID restrictions. This policy can be found on the Scarborough PS Website.
  • We started discussions around reviewing ICT (Information & Communication Technologies) policy, procedures, and information. This is an important piece of work that is aimed at pulling together all the significant changes that have occurred in relation to cyber safety and security as well as hardware and software used for student learning.
  • We also heard an update on the review that is currently being undertaken of the school’s reconciliation action plan and viewed the Narragunnawali website through which it has been set up.

Cyber Safety

I am pleased to announce that Nikki, our Chaplain has organised another Cyber Safety information session for parents. Even better news is that our amazing P&C has agreed to fund the session, which would otherwise have cost around $25 per person. The session will be held on Monday 31 July in the arts room from 6:30 pm. More details can be found in the flyer below. This fortnight, our cyber safety session will focus on online safety. The information and link below come from the eSafety Commissioner.

Help your children safely navigate their digital world and educate them to avoid harmful online experiences. Explore websites, games, apps, and social media together and set some rules.

Your support and guidance can give your children the confidence to make sound decisions online – and ask for help when they need it.

Suburban Jungle Mural

Earlier this year, our school was approached by Esti Nagy, to take part in a special project. A highly regarded artist, Esti successfully applied for a City of Stirling Creative Communities Grant, to create a ‘Suburban Jungle’ mural at the Scout Hall over at Deanmore Square. To create the mural, Esti invited a group of Scarborough kids to participate.

Our Art teachers selected students to take part in two separate sessions:

  • In March, at school – a creative drawing/planning workshop
  • In May, at Deanmore Square - painting the mural on the Scout Hall walls
  • The project has been a huge success for our school and local community. In addition to our contributions, members of the public joined in painting over several weeks, while Esti added details including an amazing likeness of two of our students! The mural is now complete, so next time you are at Deanmore Square be sure to check out the Scout Hall to see the outstanding work. Well done to the children who represented our school proudly - we have loved seeing your ideas, skills and artwork come to life. Our hugest thanks go to Esti for allowing us to be part of this project, and to Chaplain Nikki for your support.

Bike Education Program and Safety Checks

Also, this term, our school was able to offer a Bike Education Program to all students in Year Four. Sponsored by ‘Your Move’ to encourage safe, active travel to school, the children took part in four sessions learning about road rules and riding safety. Chris from Cyclesense was impressed with the listening and participation demonstrated by all students throughout the program, and it was wonderful to see improvements in both confidence and skill. In addition to the bike ed program, free and comprehensive safety checks were provided for our school community to ensure that all bikes were roadworthy and safe. Thank you to Chris and the team from Cyclesense, mechanic Wayne from Cyclemania, as well as our school community for supporting this initiative.

IT’S HERE! Book Fair is on next week!!!

Book Fair will run on Wednesday June 21 & Thursday June 22 from 8:30 am – 8:50 am and 3:00 pm – 3:30 pm

Classes will have the opportunity to view the Book Fair on Monday and Tuesday prior to the fair opening. During the viewing students can complete a ‘Wish List’. The Wish Lists will be sent home to parents, please note students will be advised that this is a Wish List only and that their parents are under no obligation to purchase any items.

Parents will be able to review the items on their child’s wish list online at www.larrikinhouse.com and if they wish to pre-purchase any items they may do so using the Larrikin Click and Collect service.

Your order will then be available to collect during the Book Fair.

Please note: Although every effort will be made to fill your order during the book fair there may be delays due to a lack of stock. If items are sold out during the Book Fair an order will be placed for your child and the items delivered to school after the Book Fair has closed.

We will be accepting cash and credit card payments during the Book Fair.
