Message from the Principal

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Communication

I wish to extend my sincere appreciation to all families who have successfully signed up to the Audiri app. It is most encouraging to see that a large majority of our parent community is now actively engaging with this platform and benefiting from the ease of access to timely communication and important school updates.

We strongly encourage parents and guardians to maintain open lines of communication with their child’s class teachers. Should you have any queries, concerns, or require clarification on any aspect of your child’s learning, our teaching staff are more than willing to assist. We value the collaborative partnership between home and school, and we believe this continued dialogue plays a vital role in the educational success of every student.

A Good Night’s Sleep

As we move forward into the term, I would also like to take this opportunity to remind families of the importance of adequate sleep for children. Quality sleep is essential for cognitive development, emotional regulation, and academic performance. The Australian 24-Hour Movement Guidelines recommend the following hours of sleep over a 24-hour period:

  • Newborns (0–3 months): 14–17 hours
  • Infants (4–11 months): 12–16 hours
  • Toddlers (1–2 years): 11–14 hours
  • Preschoolers (3–5 years): 10–13 hours
  • School-aged Children (5–13 years): 9–11 hours
  • Adolescents (14–17 years): 8–10 hours

Establishing consistent evening routines and reducing screen exposure before bedtime can greatly assist in ensuring your child receives the recommended rest.

National and International Pathways

Today, our Year 12 students are attending the Unitec Open Day, accompanied by our Careers and Guidance Teacher, Ms Esther Ehava. This event provides a valuable opportunity for students to explore their post-secondary options and engage directly with tertiary institutions. As we progress towards the upcoming examination period, we continue to work diligently with our Year 12 cohort to ensure they are well-prepared and supported in pursuing national and international pathways for further education.

Thank you for your continued support

Mr Greg Neville

Parent School Access Cards

In the interest of health and safety we are introducing a new school parent access card (example in picture). All parents need to collect their card from the school office in primary or secondary. This card will need to be presented if you want to enter the school campus at any time, including pick up and drop off.

Deputy Principal's Notices

Well done Grade 9:

Well done to our Grade 9's that organised a fantastic secondary disco on Tuesday. It was great to see all the students enjoying the event. Thank you to all the teachers that supported with supervision, I know the Grade 9 are incredibly thankful of the extra time you put in to make the event a success.

PAT Testing Data:

Please see the attached presentation from ACER that can further support parents understanding of PAT Data.

The achievement band descriptors are fixed across all year groups and are designed to support teachers to group and target next steps up the progress ladder. The achievement bands of the PAIS PAT tests we use are scaled 1-9 and align to the stanine level. They are linked to the stanines as the scaled score that reflects a students achievement band on a specific PAT test is then used to inform percentile rank and hence the stanine. An achievement band and stanine of 4/5/6 across a year is seen as average performance.

We are using the data gained to target intervention and support for students below an average band. For younger grades first taking the assessments and on their first steps in the primary curriculum we expect to see jumps in achievement more so than older years as they become more fluent in content across the grade level. Due to the complexity of the assessments students in Grade 1 have a ceiling achievement band of 4 and in Grade 2, band 6. This is one of the reasons alongside accelerated growth that Grade 1 and 2 are not benchmarked against international student data.

School Arrival and Departure Times:

Parents are reminded that school finishes at 3pm on both campuses. Students should only remain past pick up time 3.00pm – 3.15pm in secondary if they are participating in intervention classes or a sports ECA. Students not participating should leave the secondary campus promptly after 3pm.

ECAs finish have now finished in primary. All primary students should be picked up promptly between 3.00pm – 3.15pm. In the rare event of a late pick up, due to unforeseen issues, parents should be contacting the school office to advise them. Students should not be regularly picked up late as the school is unable to provide supervision for them.

The school bus service is available as an option if parents are unable to pick their children up at the required times.

As a reminder to all parents and guardians, supervision of students on the primary campus begins at 7.30am with students able to enter classes from 7.45am. We advise all parents to ensure they do not drop their children off earlier than 7.30am. If students arrive between 7.30am and 7.45am they will be supervised in the hall and need to remain in there seated quietly until they can enter classroom.

We have had notification that the ‘Early Learning Matters’ week date has been changed. This has now been moved on our calendar to reflect this change and to ensure we coincide our Early Years celebrations in the correct week of the term. The week will now be in school week 6 this term between 18th – 22nd August and our Early Years open morning will be on Friday 22nd August, more information will follow closer to the ‘Early Learning Matters’ week.

Head of Boarding

Dear Parents and Guardians

We continue our weekly virtue discussion this term as a way to foster personal growth. Boarding students are in their formative stage of life. Our virtue discussion helps them:

·        Reflect on what they want to be

·        Develop habits of integrity, responsibility and empathy

·        Make ethical decisions when parents are not nearby to guide them.

Your child’s safety and well-being are our top priorities. From wellness checks to personal development programs, we focus on nurturing the whole student.

We encourage open communication between school and home. If you ever have questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your child’s house parent or the me on email jkalenda@lis.iea.ac.pg or on mobile

Warm regards,

John Kalenda

All Term 2 outstanding and any prior period school fees have to be paid for your child to continue in class in Term 3.

For Term 3 fees, the full term fees must be paid by Week 3 of the Term for the student to continue attending class.

Refunds

  • Once Term 4 has begun no refunds are permitted for that school year.
  • Withdrawal of a student must be made in writing or on the Notice of Withdrawal form.
  • IEA will only make refunds to the individual, company or organisation that paid the fees.

Uniforms

  • The supplier is facing technical issues with their system and therefore our uniforms for various sizes not in our current LIS stock have yet to arrive.
