Term 3, Week 3 2024

From the Principal: Public Education Week 2024 - Proud to Belong

Public Education Week is when we celebrate and acknowledge all those who contribute to our children and young people’s educational journey. School staff, parents and carers, community leaders and P&C associations all play an important role in our students' education.

This year’s theme is: Proud to belong. Public Education Week is a time for all of us to feel “proud to belong”, sharing our pride in being part of NSW public education and the achievements of our students and staff.

We've had an exciting start to Term 3 with our Stage 3 students attending the Transitions Small Schools Creative Arts Camp in Murrumbateman in Week 2. The students had a wonderful time learning new skills, making new friends and collaborating with a range of teachers and specialist staff. Check out the photos and writing from some of our students.

Congratulations to our students who represented Binalong PS at the District Athletics Carnival in Temora last week. The Nigel Bagley relay team have qualified to represent at the Riverina Athletics Carnival in Week 7.

I'd like to thank the incredible Binalong PS staff who supported me to take some leave in Week 1 and keep all the wheels in motion while I was then attending the camp and PL in Week 2.

We have another busy term ahead of us, so please keep up to date with the calendar events and keep updated through Audiri.

Bullying No Way: National Week of Action

Bullying No Way Week is a commitment being made by thousands of schools and supporters across the country. It provides an opportunity to demonstrate our commitment to bullying prevention. It gives us an opportunity to connect with students, staff and school communities to implement workable solutions to prevent bullying.

The new hero colour for the campaign is purple – symbolising peace, strength and empowerment to take a stand against bullying behaviour.

The theme for this year's campaign is Everyone belongs. This theme highlights the importance of creating a sense of belonging and inclusion for students. We recognise bullying often thrives in environments where individuals feel marginalised or excluded, and it is our collective responsibility to ensure that every student feels valued and respected.

During the week we will be engaging students in meaningful discussions and activities aimed at promoting empathy, understanding, and respect for diversity. We encourage parents and carers to take this opportunity to have open and honest conversations with their children about the impact of bullying and what they can do if they need support.

Questions you could ask:

  • What do you think bullying is?
  • Have you seen it? How did you feel?
  • Have you ever felt scared at school because of bullying?
  • As well as me, who are the other adults you would talk to when it comes to things like bullying?
  • Have you or your friends left other kids out on purpose? Do you think that was bullying? Why or why not?
  • Have you ever tried to help someone who is being bullied? What happened? What would you do if it happens again?

Remind your child that bullying is never okay and discuss how they can respond safely if they experience or witness it.

Encourage them to seek help from a trusted adult and keep seeking support if needed.

By promoting open communication, we empower children to stand up against bullying and create a safer environment where everyone can feel that they belong.

Vegie Patch Update From Mrs Walsh!

Our vegie patch continues to thrive, with all the vegetables we planted earlier in the year growing bigger every day.  We should have a bumper crop to share.

This term, during science Year 3-6 are working together to design and install a new watering system to ensure our vegies survive over the summer months. Through practical lessons, students will be building their understanding of the science stand “Material World”, exploring the inquiry question:

·         How do you decide upon which material to use for a particular purpose?

·         Why are the characteristics of materials important when designing and producing?

Science in K-2

This term, K-2 are learning about mushrooms in science. The school was lucky to receive free education resources from the Australian Mushroom Growers Association, including a mushroom kit.

K-2 will be closely watching their mushrooms, learning about how mushrooms grow, types of mushrooms and the structure of mushrooms. Hopefully we will also get to cook and eat our mushrooms.

Maths in Year 2/3

This term, students in Year 2/3 have been learning about collecting, displaying and interpreting data. The students collecting data about cars, birthdays, food and football, learning to use tally marks show the information they have collected. They have then learnt how to display this data in dot plots and bar graphs.

On Thursday, the students demonstrated their learning by graphing Jelly Beans, showing how many colours are in a packet. It was a lot of fun.

The Gentle Genius of Tree

During English this term, Year 2/3 have been studying the text, “The Gentle Genius of Tree” by Phil Bunting. A factual text persuading us about the importance of trees. Through this book we have been building our skills to persuade other to our opinion in our writing.

The students felt very moved by the text and importance of trees and because it coincided with National Plant a Tree Day, we planted our own tree (bush).

P&C News and Updates

Dear Parents and Community Members

The P&C Association is gearing up for a busy and exciting September, and we need your support to make our events successful. We have our much-anticipated Bobbara Hill Walk on the 8th of September, which is a great family day out.

We have also been asked by the Binalong Community Club to assist with catering at the upcoming World Sand and Green Championships from Friday 27th to Sunday the 29th of September

We are in need of volunteers at both events, to help with meal preparation, serving of meals, setting up and packing down.  All funds raised at these events will go straight back into supporting our kids through resources at school or excursion opportunities.

If you are able to assist at either of these events please reach out to us at  bpspac@gmail.com or Liesh Cotter - 0466 913 209.

We would also like you to save the date for the Murrumbateman Field Days which are happening on the 19th and 20th of October. This is one of our major fundraisers and we will be calling out for volunteers on those dates as well.
