Rozelle Public School Newsletter

TERM FOUR WEEK TWO

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Rozelle is a place where Aboriginal children learned, played and celebrated their culture for thousands of years on this beautiful, natural land. As we learn, play and celebrate together on this land, we honour the Wangal people of the Eora nation and pay our respects to elders both past and present.

Over the past fortnight it has been wonderful to see students settle so quickly into routines and classroom learning. Term Four is always busy so it is important to take every opportunity to maximise learning opportunities.

As the term progresses, the executive team will begin planning for the 2024 school year. I would like to extend a big thank you to all families who responded to the ‘intention to return’ survey. This information is essential for staffing organisation and class formation. At Rozelle, we maintain mixed-ability classes rather than streaming students. In the coming weeks, staff will carefully consider the composition of each class. This process is complex and takes many factors into account, including academic performance, social dynamics, behavioural, complex individual needs and student combinations. Students will be asked to identify five friends who they would like in their new class. While all five may not be in the class, staff will do their very best to ensure at least one or two friends from their list are in their new class. At the start of the year, once classes are formed and announced, requests for changes cannot be accommodated. Therefore, it is important to communicate any concerns before the end of the school year.

TERM FOUR EVENTS

Term Four is always a busy time for the community as we move towards the end of the school year. There are many special events and assemblies planned for students and I encourage families to keep up to date by reading the fortnightly newsletter which includes a calendar of key events, dates and times.

GRANDPARENTS ASSEMBLY

Grandparents are very significant people in the lives of our students. This year we will have our annual Grandparents assembly on Monday 4 November starting at 9.15am in the Hall. The assembly will feature special performances from our band, dance group and choir. The assembly will finish at approximately 10am, giving students an opportunity to take their special visitor to the classroom and share some morning tea.

SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR

We are excited to announce that Rozelle PS will be hosting a Scholastic Book Fair which will run throughout Week 4 of this term, to coincide with our Grandparents & Special Others celebrations. The Book Fair is designed to give students access to more books that they want to read, from relevant new-releases to classic award winners. Families can choose to purchase books to take home, or select from titles handpicked by us that can be donated to our Library collection. Donations will feature an acknowledgement to families who have purchased the book, inside the front cover. All proceeds from the fair also contribute towards Scholastic Rewards points, which will boost funding for future library purchases. The Book Fair will be accessible from Monday 4 through until Friday 8 November between 8:30-9:00am and again from 3:00-4:00pm. We look forward to welcoming you in the Gallery Space.

TELL THEM FROM ME PARENT SURVEY

Rozelle is taking part in the Tell Them From Me parent survey. The survey will provide us with valuable feedback on our parent’s/carer’s perceptions of their child’s experiences at home and at school. The survey is completed on-line and is run by an independent research company, The Learning Bar, which specialises in school-based surveys. Staff in schools will not be able to identify individual parents/carers from their responses. To ensure confidentiality, participating parents/carers will be able to complete the survey at home by going to http://nsw.tellthemfromme.com/rps2024. The survey typically takes 10 minutes or less to complete. This survey will help our school better understand how to improve student wellbeing and engagement. It will help the school identify what works to improve student outcomes. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary. The survey window is currently open and will close Friday 8 November at 4:30pm.

KINDERGARTEN 2025 ORIENTATION

Is your child enrolled to start Kindergarten at Rozelle Public School in 2025? Your family is invited to attend a Kindergarten Orientation on Wednesday 6 November from 9:15-10:45am

Your child will have an opportunity to spend the morning in a Kindergarten classroom with a teacher and other children who might be in their class next year. Parents and carers gather in the school hall to watch a presentation, meet other parents and have any questions answered.

The session is an opportunity to learn about Rozelle’s transition to school program, uniform requirements and answer any questions you may have. The presentation will also include an overview of school routines & readiness. Your child will come home with their library bag and an orientation pack.

 To help us get to know and understand your child, we require you to complete this online survey to secure your place at the Kindergarten Orientation - Kindergarten Survey

P&C UPDATE

P&C MEETING

The next P&C meeting is next Wednesday 30 October (Week 3) in the staff room 7.30-9pm! We hope to see you there!

RPS ETHICS PROGRAM UPDATE

During Term 3 the RPS Ethics program was fully staffed so every child who selected Ethics was able to participate.  We will be needing more volunteer teachers next year so if you are interested please reach out to the RPS Ethics Coordinator Susan Stiehm at susan.stiehm@gmail.com.Some of the topics the students discussed during Term 3, depending on their year:
  • The value of disagreeing and how to do it respectfully;
  • What it means to be brave;
  • Whether animals should be kept in captivity;
  • Whether and when we can trust and cannot trust information provided by artificial intelligence.
Primary ethics lessons are an opportunity for students to engage in meaningful discussions of real-life issues. These discussions are not just academic – they’re about equipping young minds with skills in critical thinking, ethical reasoning and respectful discussion that will help them navigate the complexities of the world they’re growing up into. Thanks to all of our wonderful volunteer teachers that make this program possible:  Charlotte, Greg, Annabelle, Libby, Shelley, Greg, Melissa, Matt, Rachel, Leticia, Maria, Shadi, Sophie, Ben, Megan, Susan and Mia.
