TERM 4 WEEK 10 - 13 December 2023

Principal Update

I would like to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday break. Term 4 is always busy however, with this business there are so many opportunities for our students and for our community. It has been wonderful to see so many parents at events over the last few weeks. I would like to thank parents and our community for your support this year. Education is a partnership and we value our partnership with you. We look forward to continuing to work together for the children in Moruya in 2024. I'd also like to thank all school staff for their ongoing dedication. They truly are a wonderful team and offer such rich learning experiences making our school a great place to learn.

The last day for students will be this Friday. There will be a farewell tunnel for Year 6 at approximately 2:45 pm and parents and friends are most welcome to attend. The first day for students in Years 1-6 for Term 1 2024 is Thursday 1 February. Staff Development days for Term 1 2024 will be Tuesday 30 and Wednesday 31 January. We look forward to our new Kindergarten students joining us next year.  Kindergarten start times are staggered to support the Best Start assessment. Letters have been mailed to Kindergarten families yesterday.

Today, students who have achieved their Platinum Award are invited to an afternoon tea. Invitations were sent home last week. Congratulations to all students who reached their Platinum award this year. All stage groups will enjoy their various end of year celebrations tomorrow.

Save the Date - our swimming carnival will be held on Wednesday 7 February at the Moruya War Memorial Pool for years 3-6 and for students turning 8 in 2024.

We look forward to welcoming everyone back to school in 2024. Have a wonderful holiday.

Happy Holidays

As the school year draws to a close and the holiday season fast approaches it is timely to reflect on the year here at Moruya Public.  I’ve used the following questions as a guide.  I would encourage you all to do the same exercise with your children as the year finishes.  Their answers will also provide the basis for a great conversation that can be had with them before the school year gets underway again on the 1st February 2024.

  • What can I find to celebrate?
  • Who has inspired me? (perhaps framed as “who has supported you?”)
  • What new learning have I had?
  • What will I do differently next year?
  • What will I keep doing next year?
  • What matters to me at school?

For me, my first year in a Primary School has given me much food for thought!, and whilst I won’t bore you with the answers to the above – I will address the final question.  What matter to me are the students - the reason I work in schools is to make a difference to the lives of our young people. Getting excellent outcomes for our students matters to me. In 2023, it has been a privilege to have been a part of your children's school life.

I would also like to acknowledge the great team at Moruya Public, I am in awe of the staff, their dedication to the students is impressive.  Despite my early starts, it is not often that I am the first staff member to arrive at school.  There is usually a staff member already here going above and beyond what is expected of them.

I trust everyone stays safe and well over the holiday period.

Tracy Scobie

Merry Christmas from P&C 🌲

P&C stands for Parents and Citizens yet most off our committee members are staff. Why? I think it's because we can see first-hand the benefits for our students and school. We are all happy to donate a small amount of our time to contribute to the well-being and education of the students.  We are all super busy people so we do things efficiently,  including keeping our meeting to 1 hour. Once a month, one hour. If you can spare this hour for a worthy cause we would be pleased to have you attend next year.  Wishing everyone a happy and safe holiday!

AEO 2023 Recap

This year, MPS has accomplished a lot in relation to Aboriginal education.

One of our biggest events this year (and every year) is NAIDOC Week. This year’s theme was ‘For Our Elders’. As with every year, our NAIDOC Week was action packed with many activities. These included: an assembly, flag raising, and Elders’ Morning Tea run by our Aboriginal Student Voice, chalk art at Riverside Park, johnny cake making (assisted by our Aboriginal Student Voice) and ending the week with a mufti day and farewell to our beloved Uncle Darryl who retired this year (sad for us but great for him). One of the highlights of the week was our amazing time at Bingie Point where students, and parents, participated in several cultural programs facilitated by Aunty Trish Ellis, Mrs Boyenga, Vikki Parsley, and Moruya High School’s students, Clontarf students, and staff.

The Aboriginal Student Voice are into their second year and continued to inspire, advise, and evolve personally as leaders and role models. One of their highlight’s this year was the establishment of a bush tucker garden (warragal greens and pig face) to be utilised in the Kitchen Garden program in 2024.

This year, our school was invited to apply to participate in the Indigenous Reading Project. Only 120 Aboriginal students were to be chosen nationally to participate in the program. We were hoping that at least 1 or 2 of our students would be successful. In the end, 7 of our students were chosen to participate which was a great achievement for our students (and our school). Students were provided with a tablet and had access to an extensive online library. The program was based on good attendance and aimed to encourage and improving reading. At the end of the program, students who increased their reading, were able to keep the tablet and have ongoing access to the online library.

The Yiridbu Minga ‘Connecting to Country’ Program facilitated by Muladha Gamara, was a 7-week program involving at school and ‘On Country’ cultural experiences. 15 Aboriginal students from Years 4 to 6 were chosen to participate and were allowed to invite a friend to also participate. A total of 25 Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal students participated in the program. Activities included: smoking ceremony, traditional dance and stories, dhugan (shelter) and clap stick making; bush food and medicine knowledge; On Country experiences to Grandfather’s Gully and Shelleys Beach; and ended with a day with other participating schools such as MHS, Batemans Bay Primary and High School at Mogo.

This year’s end of year Presentation, saw 15 of our Aboriginal students receiving a total of 17 awards! Congratulations to our Aboriginal students for their achievement and to those who continue to strive, achieve, and inspire.

Other highlights for 2023 included: Yarn-Up Afternoon Tea with our parents; continued running of our weekly dhurga language program for our Year 3 to Year 6 classes by the amazing Mrs Boyenga; continuing to build connection and the relationship with Aunty Lisa (AEO), DK (Clontarf) and students from MHS; Year 6 Aboriginal students participation in an AECG NSW’s Online Lifestyle program and Gadhungal Marring Cultural Day; Stage 2 Aboriginal Boy’s Mentoring Program with MHS Clontarf; 45 students (Aboriginal & non-Aboriginal) and 5 staff attended the Sorry Bridge Walk at Batemans Bay, to reflect and pay our respects to the members of the Stolen Generations; Reconciliation Week assembly run by our Aboriginal Student Voice; MPS students performed an Acknowledgement of Country in the dhurga language at the Eurobodalla Shire Council’s NAIDOC Week Flag Raising ceremony; Aboriginal focused Staff Development Day involving an On Country experience for staff to Bingie Dreaming Track for a cultural walk with Aunty

Trish Ellis and dhurga language with Mrs Boyenga; hearing tests by Katungul Aboriginal Medical Service; and 10 of our students (5 Aboriginal students who invited a friend) participated in planting at the Moruya Micro-Forest located at the front of St John’s Parish.

A big thank you to our students, staff, families, community members, services and programs who have contributed to making this year a success!!!
