New Lambton Heights Infants School

Term 2 Week 6 2024 Newsletter

We at New Lambton Heights Infants School acknowledge that we learn and play on the traditional country of the Awabakal people. We pay respects to Elders past, present and emerging, valuing their knowledge and seeking continued respectful relationships.

We recognise, respect and appreciate the traditional custodians cultural heritage, beliefs, relationships, and continued connection with the land, the skies and the waterways. This continent was and always will be Aboriginal land.

A big announcement !

We received exciting news this week ... Three of our ten finalists were chosen to have their portraits displayed as part of the MAC yapang, Young Dobell exhibition. Congratulations to Noara (KD), Oscar (1BD) and Issy (IBD). We look foreward to seeing your artworks hanging at MAC yapang.  The exhibition starts tomorrow and we are very happy to announce that we will be taking the whole school to view the exhibition and participate in workshops. This will be on Wednesday 26 June and all costs will be covered. Permission notes will be sent through Sentral this week.

I am so thankful to our P&C for creating this opportunity for the students of NLHIS. It is an excellent example of collaboration with not only with our school community, but beyond it. I am also working with staff at MAC yapang to organise some small group workshops for students we have identified as showing high potential in the creative domain of the High Potential and Gifted Education Policy. I am excited to see what more we can do to extend student learning from our community art show.

    Congratulations...

    Attendance Matters

I would like to thank you all for your excellent communication when your child/ren are sick from school. Ensuring all absences are explained is an attendance priority for our teaching and office staff. We have had a number of children who have been absent with sickness for up to five days. We ask that if you are seeing a doctor or the chemist, you request a medical certificate to support the absence.

    P&C News

    P&C Update

    Hello everyone,

Here is a round up of the activities we have going on in the P&C.

    Join our P&C

If you would like to become a member of the P&C, please join using the form here. A cash or online payment of $2.00 is required to become a member. You are not expected to join in all meetings or activities but membership gives you the opportunity to vote and advocate for ideas about what you would like to see the P&C achieve. Our next meeting will be held on Wednesday 3 July, 7pm on school grounds or via zoom (email us if you would like join via zoom). All are welcome so please come along to help steer the P&C activities and socialise with other members.

    Snack Canteen

Snack Canteen is held every Friday during Second Lunch - between 12.45pm and 1.10pm. Most items cost $1.00 and these include flavoured milks, juice boxes, packets of chips, popcorn or grainwaves, and boxes of sultanas. For $0.50 students can purchase a frozen Quelch ice block. Students are restricted to purchasing two items. Each week we need two volunteers to run the canteen.  To volunteer for a spot, please put your name down here: https://signup.com/go/uWWvMOR.

     Soft Plastics Pick Up Volunteer

We are collecting the soft plastics from lunches and following snack canteen for recycling. As there is no direct pick-up options for this type of recycling to the school, we are seeking any volunteers that would be willing to collect and drop-off the collected plastics monthly. There are a number of soft plastics recycling centres located around the council so if you are able and willing to do this job, please email us at the P&C address below.

    Uniform Shop

The Uniform Shop is open every Friday afternoon after assembly or by appointment. Please email ahead to find a time on: nlhiuniform@gmail.com It is getting to that time where the weather is cooling off so please get your winter uniform orders in to ensure the stock will be available for your child. Tunic stocks are also low in a range of sizes so if you know you will need another tunic please get in early by ordering these items too. You can find uniform items online at http://new-lambton-heights-infants-school-pc-association.square.site. For any questions, please get in touch at nlhipandc@gmail.com.

    Thank you!

SIGNING IN WHEN VOLUNTEERING - SOME CHANGES

All visitors are required to sign in using the iPad at the office. This includes classroom helpers, allied health workers, canteen helpers, uniform shop volunteers, P&C event helpers, contractors etc. It is important that we know who is on our school site in the event of an emergency.

We are now asking that after you sign in, that you see Brooke or Cathy at the office to receive a badge for you to wear while you are in the school. That way teachers will know that you have signed in. Please return the badge  when you sign out.

All volunteers must have completed a volunteers declaration at least one day before volunteering. This gives the office the time to complete the process that is mandatory in all Department of Education Schools. Once you have completed a declaration, you will not need to complete another.

Brooke is just getting to know our community, so please do not be taken back if she asks to see ID when you are coming in to volunteer. It is all part of what we are required to do for the safety of your children.

I thank you all for your understanding and co-operation.

Term 2 Week 6 Merit Awards

    Wellbeing - Empathy

Our Second Step lessons this term focus on empathy.

Getting along with others helps make our school a happier place. To get along with others, we need to have empathy for each other. Empathy is feeling or understanding what someone else is feeling. This week, be a feelings detective! Try to notice how your classmates are feeling throughout the week. Watch their faces and bodies for clues!

Let’s be like Yuyi the ant and work as a team to keep our school a happy and safe place to learn and play.

    NLHIS is on Facebook!

We now have a school Facebook page for you to share with your friends and family. In addition to our website, the main purpose of this page is to connect to our wider community and to showcase our beautiful school.
