A message from Clare

Good afternoon families and friends,

This week, l have been in Cairns for the Australian Catholic Education Conference. This was organised for principals from around Australia. We had wonderful opportunities to listen to many incredible keynote speakers who spoke on a broad range of education matters from ‘Hope Anchored in Faith’ to the ‘Vision for Instruction’ to a keynote presentation by Prof Dylan Wiliam - Everyone counts: Responsive, Engaging Education for All. These conferences allow for some professional learning, some self reflection about one’s own educational setting and a chance to showcase what sets St Luke’s apart from other schools. It has been a really informative, inspiring and engaging week and l look forward to chatting to you about it on my return next week.

Last week, Julie Inglese and myself attended the School Improvement Learning Collective (SILC) to continue to build momentum and to work towards progressing our Annual Action Plan. Schools from around the eastern region meet each term to review, discuss and to plan effective and purposeful strategies to ensure the realisation of our annual goals.

FAITH & MISSION:

This weekend, we celebrate with many families whose children will be receiving Jesus for the first time in First Eucharist. It is such a beautiful time for our children and their families. Congratulations to Chiara, Brooklyn, Tilly, Vanessa, Olivia, Sarah, Mila, Mitchell, Clem, Jack, Tilly, Isobel, Madison, Oliver, and Ava. We are fortunate to have some candidates who have prepared with the parish: Gabriella, Jensen, Jiawei, Shayan, Rory and Miguel. May this first communion be the first of many where the children grow in love and joy with Jesus and feel his presence in their lives more acutely and personally.

Winter school uniform check in:

I have, and continue to be very flexible saying that children who prefer to wear shorts during winter can do so. However, if your child is feeling the cold and decides to wear non-uniform items like leggings, other non-school jumpers etc, please ensure they do not. Your child needs to wear school issued long pants for either sports or winter uniforms.

Please note:

  • Leggings are NOT a part of our school uniform and are not to be worn;

  • ONLY white socks with sports uniform and navy blue socks/tights with school uniform;

  • The jacket is to be worn outside only and NOT in place of a jumper in class;

  • School shoes are to be worn with the school uniform and runners with the sports uniform. Please do not allow your child to mix these up;

  • Any change to what your child is wearing on any school day requires a short email or verbal communication to the class teacher.

TEACHING & LEARNING:

It has been another fun week with Book Week holding our attention throughout. I hear the parade on Monday was fantastic and l want to thank all families for helping their child enter into the spirit of the week by ensuring their child dressed up. The photos l have seen reveal the many creative people we have in our community. The staff looked incredible. I wonder what destination you would book if you were to Book an Adventure.

We are getting super excited about our upcoming SCHOOL PRODUCTION, ‘ Bring back the Beat’. Tayla Buxton is doing an outstanding job, bringing everything together.  Tickets will be going on sale soon and we ask that you consider the following:

The technical rehearsal will occur in the afternoon as a matinee session, starting at 1.00pm sharp at Doncaster Secondary College. We will charge $5 per person and think this would be a great option for toddlers or grandparents/carers who cannot make the evening. Premiere.

The Premiere session will be $18 per ticket. We have limited seats- approximately 290 in total which allows for just 3 tickets per family. If families could split bigger ticket purchases to 3 for the  evening performance and additional tickets for the Matinee session, we would appreciate it. We ask that toddlers sit on an adults knee to allow others to purchase seats.

WELLBEING:

Last Friday, Gabrielle Carter and l attended an introductory session for Respectful Relationships. This is a very impressive program the Victorian Government has developed and revised over several years. It is a core component of the Victorian Curriculum from Foundation to Year 12. It is all about embedding a culture of respect and equality across the entire school community. Whilst the program is mandated in all government schools, MACS schools are now adopting it to run alongside other rich programs such as the Positive Behaviours for Learning framework, the Resilience Project, Smiling Minds and the like. Staff will be working hard to learn about the program before implementing it in 2026 and l look forward to sharing the fundamental elements with you all. It will fit in beautifully with our PBL pillars- Be SAFE, Be RESPECTFUL and Be RESPONSIBLE.

Be RESPECTFUL:

Every so often it comes to my attention or the attention of a teacher that children can say things that, intentionally or unintentionally, can hurt and confuse other children. I am asking YOU to have a conversation with your child about being sensitive to what they observe and whether it is helpful or hurtful to comment on that. Do we need to comment on:

  • another person’s skin colour

  • another person’s cultural heritage

  • another person’s sporting ability

  • another person’s faith

  • another person’s uniqueness

  • another person who has different gifts and talents to yours, that you may not value

When comments are made, this can lead to exclusion, to a person feeling discounted and ultimately that connection to community can be severely impacted. When parents don’t have the conversation or children hear adults expressing their own intolerances to others, those children can demonstrate these attitudes and behaviours at school. I would hope that St Luke’s remains a community of compassionate people where inclusivity, safety, respect and kindness are key to our ways of being.

Be SAFE:

At assembly this week, the children were informed of the following. The oval in the top right corner has been closed and is an out of bounds area due to people climbing trees and lots of tree litter- sticks, branches and logs being thrown over the fence. Some neighbours, who show great patience with living next to the school, are very upset and have indicated they will call the police the next time this happens. If this was to occur, l will be ringing parents of those children involved to discuss the concern and what consequences need to occur. It would be great if parents could have a chat with their child/ren to reinforce the message that we can all co-exist very easily if we are respectful of each other’s property.

COMMUNITY:

We have the FATHER’S DAY BREAKFAST coming up soon on Friday 5th September with a P&F Father’s Day Stall later in the day. Make sure you look out for the invite coming your way. Our Dads and their children will need to RSVP for catering purposes.

The P&F organised COLOUR RUN was launched on Monday and there is loads of fun to be had leading up to the event on Friday 17th October. Dani Fusca spoke to the children at our Monday assembly and a flyer went home earlier this week explaining how to register your participation.  Students who have already registered this week received an icy pole today.  Well done!

I count my blessings again that l have had such a special opportunity to travel to Cairns this week. I have listened to many inspiring people who have shared their own story. I have reconnected with old friends who make up my tapestry. This is a place where God’s creative touch is evident every way l turn. But what l feel most blessed about is returning home where my heart is…to family and my community at Blackburn South.

Have a lovely weekend.

Book Week 2025

Wow, what an amazing start to the week with our Book Week Parade on Monday!  We saw some fabulous costumes and our children throughout the week were immersed in some of the books that were shortlisted this year.

A very big thank you to our Arts/ Library leaders (Olivia D, Ella, Charlene and Katie)  who ran our book week parade with great enthusiasm.

Italian News

We have had a wonderful start to term three. The preps have enjoyed playing with the gigantic dice and yelling out the numbers (in Italian) between 1 and 6. It brings such joy to all as they yell, “cinque” or whatever number comes up. Apologies to 3/4 Sage for the noise.

The Juniors are learning to write a simple sentence using the animal and colours vocabulary that they learnt last term.

The middles, dare I say it, are really enjoying working on their ‘Ricercato’ posters. (Wanted) They have such wonderful imaginations and along with their enjoyment of drawing this has made for an enjoyable unit of work.

The Seniors have been busy using their knowledge of the ‘La famiglia’ (family) vocabulary to draw up their family trees. It has been lovely to hear the students swap stories about grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins!

Ciao, ciao

PE HIGHLIGHTS: Students Hit the Ground Running with Hockey Skills!

Our Physical Education classes have kicked off an exciting new unit on hockey, and students have already shown great enthusiasm and progress in their first week of skill-building!

During our Introduction to Hockey week, students learned the foundational skills essential for success in the sport. The focus was on developing control, coordination, and confidence while handling a hockey stick and ball. Here are a few of t he key skills we covered:

  • Stick Handling Basics – Students practiced how to properly hold the hockey stick, ensuring good posture and grip for maximum control and safety.

  • Dribbling Techniques – Through various drills and games, students learned how to keep the ball close while moving, building hand-eye coordination and precision.

  • Directional Movement – Whether it was moving forward, backward, or changing directions quickly, students began to develop the agility and footwork needed to stay mobile on the “rink.”

It’s been fantastic to see students working together, encouraging one another, and pushing themselves to improve with each session. These foundational skills will serve as the building blocks for more advanced techniques in the coming weeks, including passing, shooting, and small-sided gameplay.

We’re looking forward to seeing our students continue to grow in both skill and sportsmanship as the unit progresses. Keep up the great work, and stay tuned for more updates from the gym!

MACSSIS - Family School Improvement Survey 2025

Dear Parents/Carers

Would you like to share your feedback to help make St Luke’s even better? Do you have about twenty minutes to spare to help us identify our strengths and areas of improvement so we can set new goals for 2026?

In 2025, our school is participating in Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools – School Improvement Surveys (MACSSIS). This is an annual process whereby schools listen to the thoughts and feelings that students, families and staff have about how their school can improve. These surveys help inform the ongoing improvement of schools across the Archdiocese of Melbourne.

MACSSIS data benefits everyone within our school and provides valuable community insights on areas that each school can focus on. Our school believes it is important to encourage families to have a voice and contribute to shaping the ongoing improvement of the school.

The survey is available online.  Only one parent from your household is invited to complete the survey on behalf of the students family.  The survey can be accessed from Monday 1st September and needs to be completed by Friday 19th September 2025.

Each family will receive a personalised letter via email with your own PIN. You can complete the survey at home or you are invited to come in before or after school and complete the survey here in our staffroom during the survey period.

Students in Years 4 to 6 will also complete the survey at school. If you have any questions or would prefer your child not to complete the survey please let us know.

This year we are offering survey participants the chance to be in the draw for a $50 gift card - simply email schooloffice@slblackburnsth.catholic.edu.au with a quick note to confirm that you have completed the survey.

We really value and appreciate your input!

SMART WATCHES & MOBILE PHONES

If a child wears a smart watch to school, it must be de-activated so the child is not receiving or sending messages etc...

Mobile Phones are requested to be left at the office in the morning and collected at the end of the day.

FOOD ALLERGIES:

Allergic reactions to food… can be harmful to our children. For that reason we ask parents to think carefully about what they are packing in their child’s lunch boxes. Occasionally, something might slip through and once aware, we take precautions to ensure the safety of every child. As stated in the Family Handbook 2025:

We are an EGG and NUT free school due to the allergies of children within our community.  We ask that parents respect this request and the potential harm this could do to children if brought to school.

Thank you for your care and attention to this.

CHILDREN ARRIVING AFTER THE BELL OR LEAVING EARLY:

As part of our wellbeing care of children at St Luke's, every class engages in a morning routine at 8.50 am.  This quiet, calm time allows children to gather together in a circle, to greet each other by name, to pray and/or enter into some Christian meditation and get ready for the day.  Please make sure you allow enough time to get your child to school BEFORE 8.50 am.

If children arrive after the gate and student entry doors are locked, parents/carers are required to walk their child/ren to the school office and sign them in on the VPass iPad.

If leaving early (before the end of the day), parents/carers are required to sign their child/ren out on the VPASS iPad.
