Drummoyne Public School

Term 1 Week 7 Newsletter - Friday 15 March 2024

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Dear Drummoyne PS Community,

NAPLAN

This week, our Year 3 and 5 students successfully commenced their NAPLAN assessments with the support of their teachers and families. With approximately 120 students sitting the online assessments at any one time, the success of our NAPLAN administration so far comes down to the diligent organisation and flexibility of our Stage 2 & 3 teachers and executive staff.

NAPLAN will continue next week with the Conventions of Language and Numeracy assessments taking place on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Harmony Week

Our school will come together during Harmony Week, next week, to celebrate diversity and unity through a variety of  cultural activities and events on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Please find more information regarding these events further on in this week’s newsletter. The school’s community language teachers have organised workshops, performances, and shared meals in order to foster understanding and appreciation for different cultural backgrounds. Harmony Week serves as a vibrant reminder of our school's commitment to inclusivity and respect for all students. I hope many of you will be able to join us for a special Harmony Week assembly on Tuesday 19th March at 2:40pm.

P&C Meeting and AGM next Tuesday

The P&C AGM and March meeting has been scheduled for next Tuesday evening at 7:30pm in the school library. The Drummoyne P&C is a very special community and a huge part of what makes Drummoyne PS so great. As a part of the P&C, there are many opportunities for you to get involved and support the school. If you haven’t already, I strongly encourage you to come along to the meeting and see how you can contribute.

Extended Leave Travel Applications

If your family is planning an extended holiday from school, please consider taking holidays during official school breaks. If this is not possible please fill in an 'application for extended leave - travel' form if you are planning to take your child out of school for 10 or more school days. (form attached below or available on our website)

Student Work During Extended Leave

From time to time, requests are made to class teachers to provide classwork for students when they are taking an extended holiday during term.  While teachers are wanting to support students to continue their learning when away from school, providing worksheets and the like for children to complete has limited value for learning and generally will not be provided.

Completion of worksheets is helpful for students when it is based on the teaching and learning in class including the questions, interactions and feedback between the teacher and the students.

Our best suggestion for children who are going on extended leave is to keep a diary, written or drawn, and then share this with their class when they return to school.

Principal's Awards and Principal's Badges

Students receive values certificates from their teachers throughout the year for demonstrating our values of Respect, Responsibility and Resilience.

Once a student receives 5 values certificates, they are able to trade them in at the school office for a Principal's Award.  The 5 values certificates can be a combination of the 3 school values and come from any year the student has been in.

Once the student has received 3 Principal's Awards, they can bring those 3 awards to the school office and choose their Principal's Badge from one of the 3 values.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Harmony Celebrations next week

Harmony Week Assembly & Mufti Day - Tuesday 19 March

Our K-6 Harmony Day Assembly will be held on Tuesday 19th March for 2.35pm. This assembly will be hosted by Italian community language students who will be sharing a taste of what they have learnt so far.

On this day, our students are invited to wear mufti which can be their national costume or colours that represent the flag of their family background or the language they are studying:

  • Italian students wear green, white and red
  • Greek students wear blue and white

(no football/team coloured tops please)

Alternatively, they can wear ORANGE in keeping with the theme 'Everyone Belongs'. Orange is the colour chosen to represent Harmony Day. Traditionally, orange signifies social communication and meaningful conversations. It also relates to the freedom of ideas and encouragement of mutual respect. Students can choose to wear something orange on Harmony Day to show their support for cultural diversity and an inclusive Australia.

In Class

Through classroom lessons, discussions and activities, the students will learn of the importance of Harmony Day and the theme of belonging.

Wednesday, 20th March Gelato Day

International Gelato Day (Sunday, 24th March) is being celebrated on Wednesday at DPS.  Students will have a chance to buy a gelato scoop on a cone for $2.  Flavours include: Chocolate, Choc-Mint, Strawberry Cream, Vanilla or Mango (Dairy free)

www.schoolinterviews.com.au using the code hagqw.  Bookings are now open.

Once your booking has been finalised, a confirmation email will be sent to you.

Year 6 shirts

This year's Year 6 shirt design portrays the Emu in the Sky, a beacon of guidance just as relevant as it was to Aboriginal ancestors. The emu, formed by dark spaces between stars, symbolises the vital art of wayfinding. Just as the emu's outline directs travellers on their journey, so too do we rely on love and care to guide us through life's complexities.

Designed by Wiradjuri woman, Brooke Ashcroft, this year's shirts are worn proudly by our Year 6 students  and provides the opportunity for us to impart an appreciation for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture in the next generation.

Easter Hat Parade

We will be celebrating Easter this year with an Easter Hat Parade. Families and friends are warmly welcome to attend.

Date: Thursday 28th March

Time: 2.20pm - 3.10pm

Venue: North playground

Students are asked to bring a hat they have made at home. To prevent waste and plastic ending up in the streets that surround the school, all students are strongly encouraged to decorate a hat they already own using recycled materials.

Please note students will be dismissed from their classroom at 3.20pm following normal routines. We look forward to celebrating with you!

THIS WEEK AT DPS

Aboriginal Workshop & TPL

Drummoyne Public School is committed to improving our understanding of Aboriginal histories and culture. On Tuesday, Karen Armstrong (Aboriginal Community Liaison Officer) led a workshop with selected students to draft a personalised Acknowledgement of Country for Drummoyne Public School.

Karen shared a depth of knowledge, taking students on a journey which led to collaboration of ideas across year groups, emphasising the importance of connection to Country. The day finished with students learning about Aboriginal Women's implements in a hands-on activity. In the afternoon, Hayley (Aboriginal Education Strategic Advisor) and Hayley (Aboriginal Education Strategic Officer) led staff in teacher professional learning sessions on Acknowledgement of Country and Turning Policy Into Action. We are excited at the establishment of this ongoing partnership and look forward to improving teacher capacity in order to deliver meaningful learning when focusing on Aboriginal perspectives.

Jump Rope for Heart

On Thursday, Stage One had a visit from Casey from the Jump Rope for Heart foundation who came to launch Stage One's skipping program for PE.

Stage One got to see the various fundraising prizes they could win for donating to the foundation and learnt some cool new tricks and skipping skills. Please remember to practice your skipping at home and don't forget to register and donate.  If you have any issues please let your child's teacher know.

Congratulations to James W from 3/4K (and to his sister ex DPS student Amber W). James had a fantastic comp when he competed at the Surf Life Saving State Age Championships on Friday.

He finished 6th in the final of the U10 Boys Beach Sprint, Gold in the U10 Boys Beach Relay and Gold in the U10 Mixed Relay. North Bondi also took out the NSW SLS State Age Championships title for the second year in a row!

The whole team had a fantastic weekend, the competitors had great conditions and friendships were forged.

Sydney East PSSA AFL Gala Day

This is a photo of Isaac O, Xavi M and Hayden H who represented DPS as members of the Inner West team at the Sydney East PSSA AFL Gala Day on Tuesday. Congratulations to the boy's team came fourth overall.

My favourite moment was when Hayden made a defensive tackle and won the ball. Hayden kicked across the field to Isaac who then kicked up the wing for Xavi to score a goal. The Drummoyne boys combined for a memorable score!
