A FEW WORDS FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Last week we had a very productive Student Free Day, as staff delved into the new South Australian Curriculum for public education. The curriculum has been adapted from the Australian Curriculum to consider our local needs and context. Our teachers spent time familiarizing themselves with the structure and content of the curriculum which is aligned to the public education strategy and our school’s focus on Effective Learners.

The curriculum makes explicit, the dispositions, capabilities and knowledge at the heart of each of the 8 learning areas, describing what students need to be able to do, be and understand as Effective Learners. A brief explanation follows…

Dispositions

What it is: A disposition is an enduring attitude, belief, value or pattern of thinking that influences behaviour and decisions throughout life.

Why it matters: Positive dispositions influence a student’s actions and responses, affecting wellbeing, and success in learning.

Capabilities

What it is: A capability is the ability to do something, to take action. Each learning area emphasises the fundamental ways of thinking and working integral to the learning area.

Why it matters: Capabilities are learned, developed and demonstrated within learning areas. As students develop capabilities, they are able to transfer them to other learning areas and meet complex demands in life.

Knowledge

What it is: Learning that is transferable across contexts requires a deepening understanding. Conceptual understandings represent the central ideas of the learning area; the essence of what students need to know and understand.

Why it matters: A focus on conceptual understandings emphasises that effective learning is more than knowing disconnected facts – it is about making connections and meaning. When a student develops deep conceptual understandings, they can comprehend concepts and apply their understanding to new situations and contexts, enabling them to grapple with unfamiliar and complex problems.

We will continue to grow Effective Learners at Hallett Cove East with the capabilities and dispositions to face challenges in their learning and have the skills to thrive into the future.

Hats are required

Please remind your child that all students must wear school hats that protect their face, neck and ears e.g. legionnaire, broad brimmed or bucket hats, whenever they are outside between 1st August and 30th April. Baseball or peak caps are not acceptable.

Sports Day

We are really looking forward to Sports Day on Friday 27th September. Please keep an eye out for the Audiri post coming in week 9. This will have all of your sports day information.

Car Parking

We remind all families to leave the staff carpark spaces vacant at drop off and pick up time. This is particularly important for SSO staff arriving in the morning and our OSHC staff arriving for afternoon shifts. We thank you for your understanding and support for the number of staff needing to access the staff carpark just before and after school.

With regards

Matthew Chapman

Principal

A FEW WORDS FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL

Dear HCEPS community,

It is hard to believe we are in week 8. As I reflect on term 3 so far I think about our new mid-year receptions and how well they have settled into our school community here at Hallett Cove East Primary School.

A big part of their new learning at school has been through their literacy instructional routines.

At Hallett Cove East Primary School, our Reception class 7W has been thriving with a dedicated focus on phonemic awareness this semester. Under the guidance of our literacy coach, and the expertise of their teacher, Ms Lewis, the students have been engaging in a structured instructional routine designed to strengthen their understanding of phonemes—the individual sounds in words that are crucial for reading and writing.

Phonemic awareness is an essential building block of literacy, involving the ability to recognize and manipulate sounds within words. Through this routine, our young learners are exploring activities such as segmenting and blending sounds, identifying where their tongue is positioned and what their mouth is doing while saying and making sounds. Through the use of elkonin boxes and counters students are listening to and identifying initial sounds in CVC words.  These activities not only enhance their phonemic skills but also make learning both enjoyable and effective.

The students in 7W are showing great enthusiasm and progress in their phonemic awareness journey. We’re excited to continue this path and watch their literacy skills grow. Stay tuned for more updates on their learning adventures!

Kind regards,

Robyn Physick

A FEW WORDS FROM OUR WELLBEING LEADER

As part of our connection with The Resilience Project, families have access to TRP@Home and the Parent Hub. This next presentation from The Resilience Project is all about Empathy and Kindness.

Empathy is our ability to put ourselves in the shoes of others to feel and see what they do. We practice this through being kind and compassionate towards other people.

Brain imaging data shows that being kind to others registers in the brain as more like eating chocolate than like fulfilling an obligation to do what’s right (e.g., eating brussel sprouts)!

Research shows that practicing empathy, such as performing acts of kindness, taps into our brain’s ‘mirror neurons’, builds compassion and our behaviour becomes more social and community-based.

View the Empathy presentation here:

 Empathy: https://theresilienceproject.com.au/2023-parent-carer-hub-inspire-hugh/

Here’s an activity to practise empathy and kindness:

  • Reflect on someone in your life who could benefit from an act of kindness today. It could be a friend who would love some affirmation about their work, your pet who deserves an extra treat, or a family member who would love a phone call or text message.
  • Make a plan for who you are going to give an act of kindness to, and what you are going to do.
  • If you want to add accountability to your plan, share it with someone else and encourage them to do the same thing.
  • Follow up with each other in a few days time, to ask how it went!
  • Kind Regards,

    Ellie Burford

A few words from the Autism Inclusion Teacher

The spoon theory was developed by an American named Christine Miserandino. She uses spoons to represent the amount of physical or mental energy that a person has available for daily activities and tasks, and how it can become limited. Her theory suggests that each day every person has imaginary energy spoons to help us get through the day. Using all our spoons can result in dysregulation and/ or emotional burnout.

The link to the short video explains spoon theory, and how we can support others to save their energy spoons for the important parts of their day.
