Start of 2026 School Year

Students return for Term 1 on Monday, 2 February, with all students from Kindergarten to Year 6 commencing on this day. Staff will be onsite for professional learning from Tuesday 27 January to Friday 30 January.

Santa Photos at The Farm

A huge thank you to all parents and volunteers who volunteered their time across the last weekend. The event was extremely successful and demonstrated once again the strength of our P&C and parent partnerships.

P&C

P&C members (and those wishing to sign up) will cast their vote at the first meeting of 2026 to determine the parents and carers who will form the 2026 executive team. We encourage all families to pay the $1 joining fee and come along to participate in the vote.

Our P&C has achieved so much for the school this year. Their ongoing efforts have enabled us to fund programs such as Grow Your Mind, music, drama and languages for all students, reducing costs for families and enriching learning across the school. They also purchase every child in Year 6 a Year 6 shirt and clothing labels for all our new Kindergarten families. The P&C fund the Welcome Back to School BBQ, library upgrades, items for the garden, student representatives at state level, and many more things!

If you have ever considered joining or would simply like to learn more, I highly encourage you to reach out through the Jamberoo Public School P&C website for further information.

Social Media

From 10 December 2025, many social media platforms will be required to prevent Australians under 16 from creating or maintaining accounts on certain age-restricted services. The changes aim to protect children from pressures and risks they can be exposed to while logged in to social media accounts.

The eSafety Commissioner is leading the implementation of the law. They are responsible for identifying platforms and supporting the community with information and resources. Under-16s will still be able to see publicly available social media content that doesn’t require logging into an account. There are no penalties for young people who use age-restricted platforms or for their parents and carers as the responsibility is with the platforms. We encourage you to access eSafety’s resources and support for families on their website and register for one of the upcoming webinars.

2026 School Leaders

Our Year 5 students recently delivered their Leaders speeches as part of the selection process for the 2026 JPS student leadership team. The quality of the speeches was outstanding, with many students demonstrating confidence, strong communication skills, and a clear vision for their leadership roles. The competition was exceptionally close, reflecting the high calibre of candidates eager to represent their peers and contribute positively to the school community.

Both students and teachers participated in the voting process, making the selection fair and inclusive. Well done to all candidates for their courage and enthusiasm in presenting their speeches. The following students are our 2026 JPS Captains and Vice Captains:

Zahli

- Leo

- Maeve

- Kiara

We are incredibly proud of these students and look forward to supporting them in their leadership journey next year.

House Captains, Library Monitors and Tech Team members will be announced next week. Mrs Green and I are finding it difficult to get together to go through all the applications. There is a lot!

HPGE Year 6 - 2025

A big congratulations to Ella and Beau for successfully completing their time in the HPGE Year 6 class of 2025 at Kiama High School. This is a fantastic achievement!

It's important to recognise that this opportunity is uniquely available to Year 6 students in KCOS schools and is generously supported at a cost to the school, reflecting our commitment to providing enriched learning experiences for our students.

Please see the report below for more details on their journey and accomplishments.

Visitor to our School

We also had a very special and adorable visitor at the front of the school during afternoon pick-up on Tuesday. A cute little echidna was happily roaming around, much to everyone’s delight! Not injured or distressed, it was simply enjoying its own little adventure.

Captain and Vice-Captains 2026

Posters for Captain and Vice-Captain Positions

I was absolutely blown away by the creativity and wit displayed in the Captain and Vice-Captain campaign posters this year. The students really brought their A-game with some clever puns and imaginative designs that made the whole election campaign not only exciting but also incredibly entertaining! Their sense of humour and originality truly shone through, turning what can be a routine event into a highlight of the school year.

Please take a moment to check out the fantastic posters below. You’re sure to smile (or even chuckle) at the clever wordplay and artistic flair on display. Well done to all the candidates for their hard work and creative spirit!

Jamberoo Debaters shine at Inaugural KCoS Gala Day

On Wednesday, our talented Jamberoo debaters, Zahli, Kiara, Scarlet, Maeve, and Elsie, represented our school at the inaugural Kiama Community of Schools (KCoS) Gala Day, hosted at Kiama High School.

The day was packed with opportunities for growth and fun. Our team participated in engaging workshops and debated against other local schools on thought-provoking topics such as banning zoos and allowing Stage 3 students to select the texts they study in class. For Elsie and Kiara, it was their first experience in a formal debating setting, while Scarlet enjoyed her final debate before heading to high school.

Highlights of the day included the delicious free morning tea and lunch provided by the host school’s canteen and the excitement of being crowned the champion KCoS school! The team proudly received a specially 3D-printed trophy to commemorate their success.

This achievement is a shining example of our small school making a big difference. Our Jamberoo debaters demonstrated confidence, teamwork and a commitment to excellence, showing that size is no barrier to success. We congratulate Zahli, Kiara, Scarlet, Maeve, and Elsie for their 'gifts of the gab' and look forward to seeing their debating skills continue to grow in the future.

HPAG Future Scientist Program

Our School Joins Pioneering HPAG Future Scientists Program at Killalea State Park

We are excited to announce that our school, alongside Shellcove, Shellharbour, and Kiama schools, has been selected as a pioneer participant in the HPAG Future Scientists program. This innovative environmental education initiative engages Year 4 and 5 students in hands-on learning across the diverse ecosystems of Killalea State Park.

The program includes three offsite days at Killalea State Park and a half-day onsite at our school. Yesterday marked the first of three immersive days in the field, with the next sessions scheduled for the 25th and 26th of February 2026. Additionally, staff from Killalea’s Environmental and Community Centre will visit our school on the 19th of February 2026 to work alongside our students.

Yesterday, students embarked on an exploration of Killalea’s rich ecosystems, including its ocean, lagoon, wetlands, grasslands and forest environments. After an introductory session in the demountable classroom, students split into groups to investigate different habitats. They used dip nets to catch and identify small aquatic creatures in the wetlands and lagoon, carefully collecting data that will inform their conservation campaign. Equipped with camouflage nets and binoculars, they also engaged in birdwatching, observing species both in the lagoon waters and the sky above.

Following lunch, the exploration continued with insect sampling in the grasslands through foraging, sifting and tree shaking techniques. Students then ventured into the forest to listen to bird calls, matching sounds to species using identification guides. We also got to draw and paint using water colours by zooming in and zooming out on something about the day. The day concluded with a collaborative planning session where our school group began developing their campaign to protect Killalea, shaping ideas that will be presented next year.

Each school group is tasked with creating an 8-minute campaign presentation advocating for the preservation of Killalea State Park, followed by a 4-minute Q&A session. The program will continue into Term 1 of 2026 and will include exciting activities like canoeing across the lagoon.

Yesterday’s inaugural day proved to be a tremendous success. It was highly engaging and thought-provoking for all involved. Students gained a deeper appreciation of the interconnectedness of ecosystems and the vital importance of environmental conservation. The hands-on experiences fostered critical thinking, teamwork, and a genuine connection to the natural world.

We look forward to continuing this journey next year and witnessing the passion and creativity our young scientists bring to protecting this incredible local environment.

SWIMMING CARNIVAL 2026

All parents with students in Year 2 - 5 and those Year 1 students turning 8 in 2026 will have received a Swimming Carnival note on School Bytes last week. As we are holding our carnival in the first week back for students next year, it is very important that all forms are completed this year. We ask that you encourage you child to attend, with novelty events and a 25m swim included in the program for those students that are not particularly strong swimmers.

Please complete the form no later than Monday 15 December, to enable Mrs Behl-Shanks time to organise entries before the end of term. Thank you.

Garden Club

Kindies had their final session in the garden this week! It was such fun! They got to harvest the little carrots, called 'Paris carrots.' Thank you, Kindies for helping 'put the garden beds to sleep' as well. Sienna even decided the gnomes needed to be put to sleep as well, and she tucked the gnomes under the lucerne hay we spread over each bed!

Class Spotlight

Walabi

We are winding down as we head towards the finish line! Thank you to all the Walabi students who have maintained their focus and their enthusiasm in these last few weeks.

In mathematics, we have been focusing on revising and strengthening our addition and subtraction strategies, as well as learning some new ones. In English we are finishing up the novel The Callers, and by the time you read this, we will probably have finished it. We've had some great discussions, for example on the nature of leadership, as we compared two leadership figures in the book. We've also talked about what the main idea or moral of the story might be — this is still up for discussion as we wait till the ending!

We are looking forward to all our end of year activities coming up in the next two weeks!

Cooinda 5

How are we already in Week 8!? It’s hard to believe the end of the year is almost here. The students in Cooinda 5 have been busy setting up our Christmas decorations in the classroom and preparing for all the exciting end-of-year activities ahead.

In English, we’ve been enjoying a wonderful poetry unit. Starting with miniature poems, we explored Haiku and Tanka forms and have now moved on to expressing ideas through Cinquain and Diamante poems. Alongside this, we have been diving deep into understanding and analysing character traits in texts—examining subtle behaviours and nuances to enrich our learning and writing skills.

In Mathematics, we’ve adapted our program to focus on real-life financial situations. Students have been calculating postage costs (both domestic and international), working with percentages in sales, and exploring income, expenses, and budgeting. Year 5 even launched a mini classroom economy using Banqer, putting their financial skills into action.

Finally, our resident artist, Neak, returned for another visit, guiding students as they applied glaze to their ceramic artworks—a wonderful hands-on creative experience.

It’s been a busy and rewarding term so far!

Grow Your Mind

Thank you, Alice Peel!

A big thank you to Alice Peel and everyone at Grow Your Mind, who gifted us a class set of the Grow Your Mind book, How to be a Good Enough Kid, this week! Thank you Alice! We are looking forward to using this resource in Term 1, 2026 in classrooms.

Mrs McCormack

Grow Your Mind Club

I have been inspired by our students’ initiative to support one another and build resilience and friendship through the Grow Your Mind club. This lunchtime group led by Evie, Pippa, Sophia and Amelia provide a welcoming and safe space where students come together to foster connections, share positive ideas and strengthen their mental wellbeing.

Through Grow Your Mind, students are developing valuable skills to manage challenges, build confidence, and cultivate a growth mindset—all while forming meaningful friendships.

This student-led initiative is helping to create a community where everyone feels supported, empowered and motivated to grow both their minds and their relationships.

We are proud to see our students leading the way and encouraging others to join the journey and grow together!

Library

Dear Parents and Carers,

As we head towards the end of the year, we are asking families to please have a quick look at home for any outstanding library books that may still be borrowed.

If you find any JPS library books, please return them to school as soon as possible so we can finalise our end-of-year stocktake.

Thank you for your support in helping us keep our library collection up to date!

Mrs Green

Library Lunchtime Opening a Wonderful Success

Opening the library on Wednesdays and Thursdays during lunchtime has proven to be a fantastic success for our students. What began as a trial to provide an alternative play option has quickly become a valued part of our weekly routine.

The library offers a calm, welcoming space where students can enjoy a quieter lunchtime twice a week. Many children choose to spend their break engaging in a range of peaceful activities such as reading, drawing, board games, construction play, creative activities, or simply relaxing with friends in a comfortable environment.

Teachers have noticed that students appreciate having a place to unwind, especially those who find the playground overwhelming or who enjoy quieter, more focused play. The variety of activities available encourages imagination, cooperation, and social skills, all while fostering a love of learning and creativity.

The positive response from students has shown how important it is to offer diverse lunchtime options that cater to different needs and interests. We look forward to continuing the lunch time quiet play sessions and exploring new ways to keep this space inviting, inclusive, and engaging for all.

Term 4 Library Reward – Borrow and Win!

This term, our library has a special reward program to celebrate all our enthusiastic readers! Every time a student borrows a book, they will receive a ticket. This ticket goes into our “Library Reward Jar” for a chance to win an exciting prize!

The winner will be drawn in Week 8, so the more books you borrow, the more chances you have to win!

It’s a fun way to explore new stories, discover new interests, and enjoy the magic of reading. We can’t wait to see which lucky readers will take home a special reward. Happy reading!
